Hi, my 1991 excel was revving out of control back and forth and using gas like a tanker, I used to get about 480 miles to the tank and now get about 153 miles to a tank, then I noticed my motor position sensor had shattered and broken off and was just laying there when I lifted the hood. What does this part do please? and could this be the reason the car is revving up and down, like it's breathing and getting such terrible gas mileage, I've replaced most all of the other sensors and a vaccuum hose and nothing else appears to be wrong. Thank you very much for your response, I'm hoping when I replace this part, all will be well, I've replaced the idle sensor and throttle sensor.

I have a 91 excel I just got and it sat for 4 years before I got it.
the previous owner drained the gas tank and added 5 gallons of gas to rinse and drained that off also. Then He replaced the rear fuel filter ( or put a in line one back there any way). He changed the plugs and cap and rotor.
I changed the fuel filter that is under the hood.
I can get it to start and it runs for about 10 to 20 seconds and then the "CHECK ENGINE" light comes on and it starts sputtering and coughing and dies and is very hard to start after that. also if I get on the accelerator right away and get the rpm's up it will stay running a little bit longer but does the same thing check engine light comes on and it dies.
where do I start trouble shooting with this thing???
thanks for any help!

Hello.
I have a Hyundai Excel X3 ,1997-98 i think. It has 300,000km on it and its getting a bit slugish. I recently heard that the 4G63 will go into an Excel. And it hit me. I need a new powerplant.

I also heard that it requires mods. Dont know how true that info is. I want to put something in it that has a reasonable amount of power, but i want to avoid mods. I just want a new engine that will drop straight in. Any ideas for a motor that meets that description? Or can i get performance parts to trick out the original motor, without it detonating after a week. Lol.
Here is a similar/same model that i found on the net.

I have a 93 Hyundai Excel ( Carby variant). The vehicle recently underwent a piston rings and seal replacement. The vehicle ran well for a month or so but now, I'm experiencing acceleration problem when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. I can experience a minor jerk when shifting gears and it now takes 4000 rpms as compared to the usual 2500 rpms to shift gears. It's a four speed manual. What could be the problem? I'm in Pakistan.

I noticed that there seem to be a few different grill variations out there. For the Exel X2 (1989–94) over @
AutoMotix.com (link goes directly into the "body parts" page where the following images came from)

The first two on the left dont seem to be exactly right to fit my application. But, the third looks like it might fit with little or no modification. And I believe that the last one (all the way to the right) is the same as the one currently installed in my veicle sans Hyundai emblum.
I need some clarification on if these are all interchangeable. And if not, what modifications (if any) are required to make them work for a '93 Excel. The third looks the best and is what I am interested in at this time.

Thanks in advance.

As we all should know, the Hyundai Excel (X2) shares not only it's frame design with cars of another name / manufacturer, but it also shares much of the engine's mechanical parts. The purpose of this thread is to start a running list of components that can be swapped ONE-FOR-ONE with the Excel X2. To my knowledge the Colt, Sprint, and the Pony are all basically the same car. But, since I have not performed any swap myself, I cannot attest that any of the components of these vehicles are interchangeable. This thread is for all of you out there that have actually performed a transplant to help out us other poor saps. Which vehicles can we source our replacement parts from? I'm talking anything here (rims, grills, dash clusters, engine hardware, anything!)
BTW - I am hoping some one will post a direct replacement for the intake rod shaft of an X2... I discovered mine is broken today after an epic loss of acceleration (and many people waving fists). Here's the link to THAT POST. Thank you all for reading this and please participate.
[The topic title does not properly reflect my full intent. I'm working out how to correct this.]

As a matter of interest to all my engine has a broken exhaust valve rocker shaft, I do not think I have ever seen this before and now I know why the engine has a major blow out.
I looked at the shaft thinking it may be a broken valve spring and noticed the bolt holding down the shaft at No. 4 had lifted and the shaft has snapped, so its off the the auto wreckers for a replacement, I have renewed all the electrics so it has a good spark and had it running on two cylinders before investigating further.
Trusting this is useful information and I did hear a ticking but I assumed it was a worn lifter and I did not investigate further, so a tick tick may require a check and re-torque of the rocker shaft bolts

I have a problem with my 1992 Hyundai Excel LS, the car has only done about 85,000ks and I think the ignition system has done a major ***** as the car won't run at all and will not start, when I checked the electrical connections after fitting new high tension leads and spark plugs I found the centre post on the coil has some major corrosion in the HT terminal post.
As the coils are most probably obsolete for this model and as it is a ballasted type can I use another type of coil, I am in New Zealand, a replacement if available costs about $350

I currently own a 1992 Hyundai Excel 2 door hatch back.
I've currently re-conditioned the engine, replaced the valves which were bent and busted during a cam-belt snapping moment.
Replaced the master and slave clutch.
Replaced the old spart plugs.
Replaced the Suspenscion.
Replaced the Master and Slave Clutch Cylinders.
Replaced the Oil Filter.
Replaced the Air intake, Fuel filter.
And now well.
I've got that itch to do something to this small car, probably to just for **** and giggles to turn this small car into a sleeper.
Only thing is, after all the work, Im not sure whats compatible with the thing. Sure its an old car, but looking under the hood its clear, there a bit of room to probably tinker or replace the stock parts with something better. She currently has a second hand 4 speed gear box. Four forwards, one reverse. So yeah.
Im going to ask this once.
Can someone help me figure out how to find out which parts can be compatible when looking for a -
: New Engine <Something to make this car with a bit of kick, more than the standard stock.
: Gear box <Something thats bigger than 4 gears, currently she sits at 85 - 90kmph and its hard to get any faster struggles at 100 - 105 kmph
: Brakes <duh>
: Clutch <ditto>
Yeah pretty much you get the drift. So what would I need to look for to find compatible and decent parts for this car. Sure she's a bit of a bomb, but I need something to keep myself busy for part of this year. Its a project. Anyways.

My 90 Excel, which I've had since brand new, will die at random, irregular intervals. I have had it checked out and the mechanics are puzzled but suspect ECU or computer problems.
It will die and not restart at all, but after sitting for hours will start and run for weeks on end with no problem. Then, with no warning at all, no matter the weather or how fast I am going, it will just suddenly die and there I am trying to push the vehicle out of traffic to a safe place to have it towed home.
Today I tried something I have never tried before and it seemed to work, but I need to know the next step in getting this resolved. I was sitting in the car, quite angry again after it had died (this time luckily in a parking lot) and I for some reason decided to try to start it after pumping the gas pedal for a long time (about 20 seconds of constant pumping).
It started right up! And I drove it around for a while and it did not die again.
Any theories? Any help is of course VERY much appreciated.

i have this 89' excel 4 door..............not hatchback.
i had a problem for a while i could not figure out . my brake pistons would bind up on me. i would literally stall the car while driving.being in traffic sometimes i would force the car to off the road and let it cool down then go off again till it happens or realease pressure in the lines.
i fixed this as i found out it was the brake master cylinder fooling around. i got a replacement kit and did it over.
New prob. ever since i noticed my vehicle working hotter than before . sometimes too hot. overheating at times. I read some items. i noticed that the water in radiator gets sucked in when indling or reving the engine. ( some topic said thats an idincation that the water pump is working), i don't have leaking hoses.
was wondering about the gasket. would forcing the car with binding brake affect it.
also read something about the thermostat.how to check wether its good or bad.
also i think my clutch and plate is goind bad. actually the cluth rides. could this cause the overheating.
oh forgot to add...if i run the car fast say on the highway it cools down say goin over 35-40 there about ..but as soon as i start slowing or get stuck in traffic up goes the temp. the fan works. it comes on and goes off. worst if i am goin up hills.
if i start the car and move off on a morning before it warms all the way up i could get like 20 mins before this starts happening. i d k
any suggestions . thanx in advance guys.

Hi all,
This is my first post here. Got a slight problem with the excel first of all, its the girlfriends old car it done a head gasket about 2 years or so ago, thats all been replaced, and as far as i know the timing has all been re-done to. I was playing around with it to get it started for her as all it would do was wind over and never start. But now i've noticed that when turning the key, we dont even get any dash lights whatsoever, or even headlights when i turn them on. I have charged the battery and checked most of the connections, and everything seems normal to me so far. I was just wondering if i may have missed something ? or if someone has had the same problem so i can atleast get it back to the stage where it "would" crank over. Then i can try and work things out from there once i get it turning back over again.
Cheers
Bretto

Hello
I was just wondering if anyone can help me ?
I use my son's Hyundai Excel Hatchback sometimes (as it is very cheap on fuel) and while driving it, two dash lights were on.
One was of an exclamation mark in a circle and the other was a capital P in a circle.
As we don't have a manual and my son knows nothing about cars I was wondering if somebody out there could inform us what these two red lights on the dashboard mean ?
Thanks if anyone can help,
Gabby in Qld Australia

Gidday, this is my first, so go easy on me!
I'm trying to get an aftermarket tacho to work in my EFI distributorless 1.5. I have found tacho power, earth & instrument backlight tap-inable points on the centre plug on the back of the instrument cluster - there are 3 wires in a row next to each other: black(earth), white(backlight), and blue/black(tacho power).
The circuit diagram in the manual also shows a white wire coming into the tacho. This wire is not present on the centre plug of the instrument cluster!
My problem is: do I have to find a (one & only one of them I hope!) white wire coming straight out of the E.C.U. main plug & tap into that, or as I was juist reading do I need an isolator circuit of some sort? I'm just a bit nervous (sorry-VERY nervous) about this & I want to be sure so I dont destroy the E.C.U. So at the moment I have a tacho that lights up nicely even though it says I'm doing no revs when I actually am! I would appreciate anyone's help on this, & I hope to be able to help someone else in the future on this forum if I can

We have a Excel that ran great when it was driven everyday, but now that I bought my wife a new Santa Fe, the Excel does not get driven. When it was driven as a primary car we had great luck with it, but now I can not keep a charge on the battery, bought a new battery and I try to keep the engine running by driving it a couple time a month for a few miles, but the battery continue going dead so now I think it may be a short, but I can find it, does anyone have a similar problem that they have been successful it correcting?
Or is the problem I just don't drive it enough? I was told by the dealer that to keep this car in good running condition it must be driven, but it is hard to allow my wife to drive it if I can not trust the car to start. I drive a company truck so I cant use it
It is a great little car and we are not ready to sell it, just in case I may need to drive it down the line

Hi all, need some help with daughers car. She had very monor accident in front and now motor won't run properly.
Computer said acm sensor - so changed it.
No difference - but the centre terminal of the cam sensor has 11.38 volts - book saya 4.5 to 5.5 volts.
Changed computer, with another secondhand one no different
Did compresson test all cylinder equal, checked fuel pressure seem ok.
But did notice air in coming out of the inlet maniford ie took of air duct and could feel air blowing out - though it should normally suck.
Suspecting maybe the cam belt jumped a tooth, but compressor is good and even. Doesn't seem to be an easy way to check value timing so before I start pulling the timing belt covers off, I was wondering if anyone has any ideas.
forgot to say, its a 1999 twin cam excel
Ok, for those that want to know the answer - the timing belt had jumped 5 teeth - belt was fine, tensioner was fine - can only assume the engine turning the wrong way from being in gear when it was backed into.

I have a ‘88 Hyundai Excel GLS that is very hard to keep running until it gets up to operating temperature.
It is a 1.5L, automatic transmission and is carburated using a Mikuni carburetor.
Here’s the chain of events as to when the trouble first started and what I have done so far.
It was running great and then one day it wouldn’t start and the carburetor had flooded. When I did get it started, it seemed to run OK. The problem re-occurred several times that day and I figured the float was hanging. Later that evening, I was going down the freeway and the motor started to lose power and started to heat up. By the time I made it home it was barely running and couldn’t quite make it into my driveway. It smelled very hot. I raised the hood and saw the exhaust manifold glowing cherry red. The next morning I started to work on the problems it had. The exhaust manifold had cracked. I figured the timing belt may have jumped a tooth as well as the carb needed to be rebuilt. I rebuilt the carb and replaced the timing belt. The motor would start but would die in a couple of minutes. I checked the vacuum reading and it was at 8 and declining as it would be accelerated. I then replaced the distributor vacuum dual advance as it had a leaky diaphragm and the HAC valve for the same reason. Still no help. Traced out looking for vacuum leaks.... none found. I then pulled the exhaust manifold and cranked it up. It now stayed running and the vacuum reading was 16 and holding. I replaced the catalytic converter and re-installed the manifold. I cranked it up again and I still had the same problem. By now this was getting quite frustrating. I pulled the manifold back off and found it would run with it off the motor. I discovered the car had two catalytic converters (one being inside the exhaust manifold). I figured I was going to be changing the exhaust manifold anyway and so I went to buy a new one. OUCH... $680 for a new manifold that contained the cat.
I made the rounds to the wrecking yards and found the manifold. The cat had been stripped out of it but I figured it had a new one farther down the exhaust system. After all of this being replaced, I figured it would run great. Wrong! The same thing took place after all was installed. I dropped down the muffler and you guessed it. It was stopped up also. Whew!!! now it runs... sort of.
It starts up instantly but it is very hard to keep running when cold. I can put it to full choke and it will stay running. It will die if it is uder 2500 rpm. It has a very lean miss and can be head in the exhaust. After it gets to operating temperature, it will run and idle just fine and smooth. I replaced the O2 sensor and still no help. I ran a compression check and all cylinders were reading 160. I adjusted the valve lash to the factory 6 mm for the intake and 10 mm for the exhaust... still no help. Then I re-adjusted the intake for 10 mm to see if it would help... no it didn’t. I have the ignition timing set at the factory recommended setting... still no help so I varied it to no avail. I also have changed the EGR valve thinking it may be leaking. Replaced coolant sensor and checked all of the electrical solenoids, valves, TPS, and even looked over the connections in the computer. I ohmed out the wires and connectors just in case I was having an electrical problem. Well... I am getting desperate and grabbing at straws.
The up side of these events is the car before it started these problems would get 26 mpg in the city. Now after all of this, it is getting 33 mpg. So not all is bad.
I am out of ideas and any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for taking your time to read this long explanation and your help.

my friends 1997 excel has a rear wheel locked up for no reason, she was driving it home all was good parked the car then went out to drive it 2 hrs later and the drivers side rear wheel is locked up and will not release???
I never heard of this before, how does a rear brake just lock up, the park brake cable is lose underneath the car on both sides and the park brake seams to operate good, when i lift the park brake handle the cables become tight when i put the handle down the cables become lose, but yet the car will not move easily because of the one wheel not truning.
I will take apart the rear wheel in question and look at the brake but it just seams wierd that it just happened so quickly with no notice, I think the rear pads are totally gone and its metal to metal and it was raining and now they are usted together after sitting for a few hrs ????
Or the brake system hydraulic wise is locked up???
What would cause this issue?

Car was running great until this morning, when after a short stop jumped in to go again and the car cranked just fine but won't fire. The RACV came out (same as the AAA in the USA) and they determined I had no power at the injectors but I had good spark. The MPI fuse tested OK too, any ideas??
Thanks Peter

Anyone know why the spark would stop then come back after a rest?

Hi. Seems when its raining quite heavily the rear hatch leaks. i thought it was comming in behind the rear bumper, after some silicone the water is still getting into the rear floor somehow. i removed the rear plugs until i can figure out where the leaks are coming from. Anyone have a similar problem and how'd you fix it. Thanks Scott

well firstly hi to all on the forum...given i am new to this forum

i got a 1995 5 door excel series III,
recently purchased 2nd/3rd 4th hand..who knows?
it appeared to be a real goer..and is ..but has some strange issues with the electrics.
On its maiden trip home some 400kms from purchase..the battery died, and the backup battery and the other backup battery i had with me.
So from that i figured the alternator has a major issue...so i took it to the shop for repair -rebuild... $175.00 for labour and regulator !
Ouch...
then i find on the web this place that imports the refurbs from overseas for $185 with 12 months...
then i was a little mad...
anyway with the battery recharged and alternator fixed...its still got issues..
1) no current seems to be goin into the battery from the alt...
2) the started engine battery is only showing 11.6v and with the engine off shows 12.25v
( now all know a 12v battery if new does about 12.8v and as they age slide back to 11.8v ..then start to go off as they slide to 10v or less)
* also i notice that no internal room lights unless car is running ....same for boot....i get a restart of the clock everytime i restart.
i checked the fuse box.....some items are on 11.6v and some are on 14.8v.... which is the sort of voltage i expect to see at the battery with the car running...
so...alternator appears to be working!
yet....
if i take the + side of the battery lead off the battery the car dies ..which shows there is no alternator power being delivered.. yet the fuse box tells me otherwise
now i have not messed with the car.....other than battery and alternator and refit a cd/player while noticing that the heater cable was unserviceable...
Has anyone had this sort of issue with there hyundai excel ?
If you have let me know please...if you know the fix

Anyway thanks
bg phil

Hi all, my excel is no longer blowing air up onto the windscreen, the fan works but the air isn't coming out. Can I fix this without removing the dash, if so where should I look first?
Thanks
Peter

Hi, and thanks for reading this.
My daughter's 1998 GLX 5 door twincam excel is having a minor lighting issue.
The reverse lights and the interior light are not working.
Tail, and indicator lights are working no problem.
I've checked the fuses under the hood and on the drivers side but couldn't find anything specifically to do with those two circuits.
I replaced the reverse light globes, but that didn't have any effect. I did notice that there was nothing wrong with the globes I swapped out.
Anyone able to advise me please?

Hi all,
I'm in Australia and new to this forum (and in owning a Hyundai too I must say). Now I have recently bought a 1992 Excel Sprint and it has an odd fault, firstly the front left parker light will not work, even with a new bulb. the left rear tail light will also not illuminate with a new bulb and the instrument panel lights will not work. I have found a small fuse box in the engine bay but it didn't have any fuses for these lights, is there another fuse panel somewhere?
I hope someone can help.
Thanks
Peter

Hello everyone, I own a 1994 excel gls, and I really like this car, except when I encounter bumpy roads.
Can anyone give me some tips on where to start to improve the suspension and general comfort of the car? I've read something about using Mirage parts, but I don't really know if this change is worth it.
Thanks.
