Gidday, this is my first, so go easy on me!
I'm trying to get an aftermarket tacho to work in my EFI distributorless 1.5. I have found tacho power, earth & instrument backlight tap-inable points on the centre plug on the back of the instrument cluster - there are 3 wires in a row next to each other: black(earth), white(backlight), and blue/black(tacho power).
The circuit diagram in the manual also shows a white wire coming into the tacho. This wire is not present on the centre plug of the instrument cluster!
My problem is: do I have to find a (one & only one of them I hope!) white wire coming straight out of the E.C.U. main plug & tap into that, or as I was juist reading do I need an isolator circuit of some sort? I'm just a bit nervous (sorry-VERY nervous) about this & I want to be sure so I dont destroy the E.C.U. So at the moment I have a tacho that lights up nicely even though it says I'm doing no revs when I actually am! I would appreciate anyone's help on this, & I hope to be able to help someone else in the future on this forum if I can

Sounds stupid I know. Any Ideas?
Anyone know why the spark would stop then come back after a rest?

Car was running great until this morning, when after a short stop jumped in to go again and the car cranked just fine but won't fire. The RACV came out (same as the AAA in the USA) and they determined I had no power at the injectors but I had good spark. The MPI fuse tested OK too, any ideas??
Thanks Peter

well firstly hi to all on the forum...given i am new to this forum

i got a 1995 5 door excel series III,
recently purchased 2nd/3rd 4th hand..who knows?
it appeared to be a real goer..and is ..but has some strange issues with the electrics.
On its maiden trip home some 400kms from purchase..the battery died, and the backup battery and the other backup battery i had with me.
So from that i figured the alternator has a major issue...so i took it to the shop for repair -rebuild... $175.00 for labour and regulator !
Ouch...
then i find on the web this place that imports the refurbs from overseas for $185 with 12 months...
then i was a little mad...
anyway with the battery recharged and alternator fixed...its still got issues..
1) no current seems to be goin into the battery from the alt...
2) the started engine battery is only showing 11.6v and with the engine off shows 12.25v
( now all know a 12v battery if new does about 12.8v and as they age slide back to 11.8v ..then start to go off as they slide to 10v or less)
* also i notice that no internal room lights unless car is running ....same for boot....i get a restart of the clock everytime i restart.
i checked the fuse box.....some items are on 11.6v and some are on 14.8v.... which is the sort of voltage i expect to see at the battery with the car running...
so...alternator appears to be working!
yet....
if i take the + side of the battery lead off the battery the car dies ..which shows there is no alternator power being delivered.. yet the fuse box tells me otherwise
now i have not messed with the car.....other than battery and alternator and refit a cd/player while noticing that the heater cable was unserviceable...
Has anyone had this sort of issue with there hyundai excel ?
If you have let me know please...if you know the fix

Anyway thanks
bg phil

Hi, and thanks for reading this.
My daughter's 1998 GLX 5 door twincam excel is having a minor lighting issue.
The reverse lights and the interior light are not working.
Tail, and indicator lights are working no problem.
I've checked the fuses under the hood and on the drivers side but couldn't find anything specifically to do with those two circuits.
I replaced the reverse light globes, but that didn't have any effect. I did notice that there was nothing wrong with the globes I swapped out.
Anyone able to advise me please?

Hi all,
I'm in Australia and new to this forum (and in owning a Hyundai too I must say). Now I have recently bought a 1992 Excel Sprint and it has an odd fault, firstly the front left parker light will not work, even with a new bulb. the left rear tail light will also not illuminate with a new bulb and the instrument panel lights will not work. I have found a small fuse box in the engine bay but it didn't have any fuses for these lights, is there another fuse panel somewhere?
I hope someone can help.
Thanks
Peter

Hello everyone, I own a 1994 excel gls, and I really like this car, except when I encounter bumpy roads.
Can anyone give me some tips on where to start to improve the suspension and general comfort of the car? I've read something about using Mirage parts, but I don't really know if this change is worth it.
Thanks.

hi where is the location of an oil sendind unit on my engine?
think its a 1.5L engine. I dont think there was different sized engines for this year anyway?
how do I tell the engine size in the first place also?
Anyway whats happening is after say driving about 100Km when i come to a stop the check engine light comes on. i give it some gas and it goes off. So i drove it back home. Same distance and when come to a stop the Check engine light doesnt come on again. Even after leaving it running at idle it didnt come back on.
So first thing I want to do is change the oil Sending unit, Or am I thinking it should be called oil sensor unit?
If this doesnt fix the issue then I will have to replace the oil pump.
So please some help thanks.

hi guys
had a search couldnt find exactly what i was looking for and got rather confused.
My mates car is stuck at the airport
car wont wind over, when he jump starts it it runs, apparently as soon as he touches the brake (auto trans) it stalls. He did this twice before giving up cause he had to be somewhere. we need to get this thing running and out of the carpark tomorrow moring
My mechanical knowledge is slightly above average, im very familar with hondas and their managment systems but this is my first encounter with a hyundai. If i can get a engine code from it i should be able to figure out the issue (presuming its stored a code)
A quick run down on how to extract the engine trouble codes and any suggestions/tips are greatly appreciated
sorry bout the long post.
Kind regards Luke

I have inherited a 1990 Excel from my Mom who says the car had issues...she drives mainly short distances, around 5-10 miles. Sometimes when she would try to re-start the car after about 10 minutes, she would get nothing....no click, no grind. The car has a known good battery with clean terminals. When I drove the car to my house, (about 20 miles) the car began to skip and stutter after about 18 miles...we managed to limp in the rest of the way, but now the car won't crank up at all. It will turn over for as long as I will keep the key turned, but not even a sniff of a crank. Now, she had a very LOUD fuel pump...I don't recall hearing it on the trip up here, so I'm thinking that may be the issue...it needs to be replaced anyway. I'm wondering if anyone else ever had a set of issues like these and what ended up fixing it? Thanx in advance!
BTW....it's an auto tranny.

Dear Friends,
I need your help urgently...
I have Hyundai (Pony) Excel 1993 model.
Yesterday night, i was smoothly driving my car on highway, suddenly its engine stops and waring lights (battery + Handbreak + Oil) on.
I pull my car on the road side and try to start it but it was taking self but the engine didn't starts...
At that time i feel very different sound of my car engine...it was like some thing slipping in side the engine...
Can any tell me what happened to it, someone told me that its timing belt may be fail...
I changed the timing belt about two years ago and it is used only approximately 30,000 Kms.
If timing belt fail, what about the rest of the engine.... ?
Kindly reply as soon as possible.....
Thanks in advance,

Hello
I was just wondering if anyone can help me ?
I use my son's Hyundai Excel Hatchback sometimes (as it is very cheap on fuel) and while driving it, two dash lights were on.
One was of an exclamation mark in a circle and the other was a capital P in a circle.
As we don't have a manual and my son knows nothing about cars I was wondering if somebody out there could inform us what these two red lights on the dashboard mean ?
Thanks if anyone can help,
Gabby in Qld Australia

Hey please help with this
After engine is hot and been drivin around when i come to a stop the Engine oil light comes on? When I give it gas it goes off?
I replaced the Thermostat because it used to be stuck open. So its got a new thermostat. Also the oil level is good thats not a problem.
Where is the oil sending unit located on this engine?
Oh ya how do I tell what size my engine is? I think its a 1.5l because i think only in 89 they made 1.5l for north america. At least i think so.
I put a what thermostat the autopart guy gave me for my model and year. Could that be the problem if i put the wrong size thermostat in? It did look alittle different from the older one. Plus when changing the thermostat I found some funny lookin piece of metal in the area where the thermostat sits. A rectangle shaped metal peice with a hole in it and a sort of bent on one end... maybe take a photo of it and post it.
please need some help... can i figure out the engine size from the VIN# also ... thanks for any help

i purchased her at the begining of november and unfortunatly it seems i have brought one thats been very poorly treated and well i guess a lemon.
the clutch went 2 weeks into buying it and finally had it fixed yesterday, but my machanic came across another problem while fitting it.
i have no idea on what the part is called, but he called it some sort of engine bracket? it runs from the front of the underneith of the car to the back with 3 bolt things at the front and 2 at the back. one at the back has been threaded in and wont come out and one at the front has come out and cant get it back in as the nut has fallen off the bace part. am i making any sense rofl???? this nut is supose to be welded onto the brace part. so now the bolt cant go back on.
so it shouldnt relly be driven as im thinking the engine might fall out or something lol.
so he told us to take it to a crash repairers, but im just wanting to know if anyone knows anything about this part weather maybe i can get one off another or anything really!!
machanic said he couldnt find anything that poitned it had been in an accident so he's thinking the last people took out the gearbox and replaced it themselves and well stuffed up this brace??
Onto the other problem i got the burning smell wich pointed to the clutch in the first place. then i get the same smell at the brakes. machanic tell me brakes are fine and clutch has been replaced so what else may this smell be??
god i just wanna see some light that one day my baby will be drivable????
thanks in advance to anyone that might have some info

My Hyundai has had a re-occuring problem & mechanics keep thinking they've fixed it but never do. The symptoms are; I'll be driving along normally & then I have to stop at lights or a round-about, when I stop the car feels like it is 'locked-up' then I go to take off & it won't accelerate, it feels 'stuck' so I put my foot down hard & the wheels screech(it feels like the drivers side wheel) & I proceed with a sudden jerk. Also sometimes if I'm on a slight rise I go to take off & it starts to roll back, it's an automatic, & I have to quickly put the hand brake on so I don't roll back into cars behind me & put my foot down hard once again. Anyone know what is going on here?

Morning all! vaguelly...
I have a 1995 hyundai excel sprint, auto transmission....over the last week or so, I have been having difficulties with it.....
It started out that the engine was whirring sort of softly when in drive and reverse.. Not in park or neutral.... And it eventuated to whirring all through all the gears, quite loudly. Sluggish like anything... Nearly no acceleration, and massive loss of power up inclines. Also the transmission feels like it is slipping; It isn't changing appropriatly, smoothly and/or quickly. Sometimes it doesn't change and I am left freewheeling and inadvertantly revving the engine. Not to mention that I have gone from 692km to a 45L tank, down to 300km to a tank.... And here in Australia, that is a costly little venture.
Theories to date have been:
Plugs and leads
Coil pack
Fuel Filter
Auto Tranny fluid/filter
Bad batch of fuel
Computer
Work so far includes:
New plugs and leads
New genuine coil pack
New genuine fuel filter
All that has happened since then, is the brand new plugs now need replacing, as the have burnt over the electrodes. The engine still whirs, some power has returned.
A supposedly carwise friend of mine has suggested that the massive fuel consumption and burning of the plugs is indicative of an excessively fuel rich burn... And it may have been incited by poor fuel, and the computer has compensated values, and stuck....
The whirring is a severe worry to me, as it sounds also reminiscent of a pump under excessive loading...
To be honest, I am 19... I build guitars, not tinker with cars. I need the car for work and University. And I am absolutely besotted with the X3 excels, as I have been around them since I was 5.
Can anyone please advise me on a possible problem and or solution?
Greatly appreciated.
Matt Mulcahy.

But if you unhook Battery then it will let you turn it to off with no problem and take key out. So does anyone know what the problem could be and how to fix it?

Hi i have a 1990 excel. I picked up this car and it was running bad, the owner didnt know what was wrong with it so i tried to fix it. I replaced the fuel filter fuel lines everything to do with fuel and it wasnt it i need some help fixing this. I can drive it fine for like 5 minutes or so then it starts bogging down like it is running out of fuel, it eventually bogs down until it shuts off. I am thinking maby an 02 sensor but im not sure. has any one else had this problem, any one have ideas to test if its the 02 sensor.
Thanks for looking and please if you can help do.

Hi all, first post.
I have an auto 98 Excel coupe. when economode button is up it creates a problem where the auto doesn't want to drive, as soon as you try to accelerate it seems like auto is slipping. press button down and restart car, and problem slowly goes away.
I can't find any reference to it on google, and my mechanic is baffled. does anyone have any ideas?
thanks in advance
Ray

hey everyone,
'99 Excel 1.5L Auto
[attachmentid=9168]
This car is completely stock, i'm not sure if i wanna put a lot of money into it to pimp it up a little, but need something to put it just a little ahead of the rest, since having the car i've replaced the stereo system and tinted the windows (not shown in pic). I'm considering getting it lowered with mags, but its a lot of money with not a lot of return.
I need some ideas on some cheap & fun mods i can add to this little pocket rocket!!
love it hear from ya!
