Hello guys,
I'm wondering if any difference exist between dealer bulk oil and popular oil like Valvoline, Quaker State....
The reason I'm asking is since my car is new, the oil change always been done at the dealer for warranty reason. It seems that my engine gets more and more noisy. Lately I started my engine and I could hear a terrible valve like noise. I couldn't get rid of the noise after over couple of minutes even when accelerating. I have 75K Km on my car and it maybe just the time to do my own oil change. I'm really concern about the quality of the oil they are using.
What do you think?
Thanks,
Charles

My sonata has 12,000 miles on it and I've noticed a musky smell coming from the A/C vents (I thought it was my feet.) After doing some research I've come to the conclusion that the cabin air filter needs to be changed. I've never had this happen before and I've had cars up to 150,000 miles. I read these should be changed every 15,000 miles. Has anyone else had this issue? But other than that one thing, I love the car...it's a lot better than the Honda I use to have.

I had a post beofre about this as well but now since i got the flip key and i had some ppl send me mails asking about this i thought it best to write a small post. I bought both the Korean auto parts and the cheap ebay key and both have been really easy to install. The only real difference is that with the cheaper ebay key you dont get any instructions on how to do the installation but than again it really isnt that hard. I got my new keys cut at a local key shop and there was no problems with that i just split the original key myself to get the chip and put the new flip key together at home.
The korean autopart key looks nice but i really dont see anything wrong with the ebay version as well, tbh consdering the cost of the koran auto part key i would probablly go with the ebay key if i ever needed another one again. Here are the links to the keys i bought:
http://www.koreanautoimports.com/store/pro...fdfb184e32ebd53http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Flip-Remote...sQ5fAccessoriesand here are some pics of my new keys one for me and the other for my wife.

i'm planning to buy a new car this December and have been doing a lot of internet research, and i've pretty much narrowed it down to a '04-'09 Sonata or '07-'07 Elantra. I would like to keep things under about $12,000 but i'm young and would prefer to spend less and invest more if possible.
Initially, I was gonna go with a Sonota. I thought it was a no brainer because it seems to have more/better features than the Elantra (e.g. steering wheel audio controls, V6 option cause I enjoy power). However, when I began to look at gas mileage, it seems that the Elantra might be a better choice. The newer Elantras also have the redesigned interior that didn't appear in the Sonata until '09, and i'm afraid that year Sonata is pretty much out of my price range, especially in the options I want.
I'm just curious is you guys can give me some advice on which would be a better car for me. I'm going to test drive several cars of both models, obviously, but thought this would be a good starting point. Can anyone give advice on the Elantra power? I understand it will be less powerful than a V6, however will it be 'weak' like my '88 Excel was, or my '91 Cavelier? or does it have a bit of pickup? what about fuel economy vs. power between the 4 banger and the V6?
what about ride quality and interior fit and finish between Elantra and Sonata? does the Elantra feel cheap compared to a sonata?
and finally, how do you guys think these cars comapre in general? is the Sonata a far superior car, or is it more of a size difference?
Thanks

2008 GLS I4
Bought car in July, first oil change Aug 1 - just reused the 'gasket'. I've seen that some kits on dealer sites include the gasket, but they're a bit pricey if you ask me. Autozone doesn't show it in related parts. Anyone know who has them besides dealers?
TIA

Behind Hyundai's decision not to offer the new, 2011 Sonata with a V6 engine is the claim that they've sold lot more I4 Sonatas than V6.... This sound weird to me, to a point of being false.... I know only the American/Canadian Sonatas had a V6 option, so maybe if comparing their sales WORLDWIDE, they sold a small percentage of V6, but still....... I can't complain about my car's power, but still, this is America, where people drive powerful, large engines, and to me this decision sounds silly....
...Especially when looking at the new car that seems large and heavy... I can't imagine a 2.4 Liter engine pulling it....
Is there a way to find out how many 4th generation I4 Sonatas were sold here vs. the V6?

Hyundai Beats Rivals in U.S., China; Profit Soars
Posted by: Moon Ihlwan on October 22
No other market showed higher growth in auto sales than China this year and no other major automaker outperformed Hyundai Motor there. That more or less explains the South Korean carmaker’s
amazing financial results at a time its rivals struggle to navigate through the industry’s worst downturn in memory. Hyundai said Oct. 22 its net profit in the three months ended September hit a new quarterly record of $832 million, up from the previous record of $690 million three months earlier and more than triple $225 million a year ago.
In China, Hyundai sold 412,000 vehicles in the first nine months of this year, up 88% from the same 2008 period. The rise, more than double the pace of a 43% gain in China’s overall car sales during the period, increased Hyundai’s market share in the country to 7.2% from 5.5% last year.
Hyundai now sells more cars than Toyota, Honda and Nissan in China.Hyundai also scored big in the other crucial market in the world: the U.S. In the first nine months,
its U.S. sales rose 1.3% to 342,000, while Toyota’s sales fell 28% in line with the overall market. In the month of August, when carmakers were benefiting from the government’s cash-for-clunkers program, Hyundai’s sales surged 47% to a record 60,467 vehicles. In the global market, Hyundai’s share jumped to 5.5% in the third quarter of this year, up from 4.4% a year earlier.
Hyundai, like many other Korean exporters, enjoys advantages from a weak Korean currency. The won, which hit an 11-year low in March, has since gained by more than 30% of its value against the dollar but it is still about 20% weaker than it was at the end of 2007. The won is expected to strengthen further over the next year but Hyundai execs express confidence that their company could keep growing in 2010 with a new lineup of cars, including the newly designed Tucson crossover and Sonata family sedan. If things pan out as Hyundai envisages, its group sales, including those of Kia brand, could soon zoom past Renault-Nissan’s. That will make Hyundai one of the industry’s top five major players.

I got swiped on the driver side corner of my Sonata(hit and run while parked). It looked really bad at first but I was able to get 90% of the scratches off, but a chunk of paint was stripped of the size of a quarter and that part is sticking out just a little bit now as well. Also the chrome trim on the rear driver side is snapped in the middle, I checked with the dealership and its like $56 to order it, I passed cause its not that bad, you cant really notice it. I took it to the dealer yesterday(getting routine maintenance done) of course the dealer said, take it to their body shop for an estimate, and they were talking the touch up paint pens down($10 revenue vs. probably $600 to professionally fix it). Anyways I'm just going to either live with it or use touchup paint. Before I start and paint it I wanted some insight or special techniques or instructions. I've heard that it can take many coats etc etc etc. I used touchup paint once before that was in a nail polish like bottle and I did a terrible job the texture was really ugly, all it did was color in the spot, so I really want to take my time and do as good of a job as possible. I know I'm probably going to get search checked by some of you guys, I did search but I wasn't finding anything except what paint to use. I decided the dealership pen is the most convenient route. My question is what is the best way to apply this thing? Wash the area, paint then wax the area? some detailed instructions would be really appreciated! thanks.

Good morning,
I have a manual 2008 Sonata 4cyl. Being the fool that I am, I left the dome light on and didn't use my car for a week so the battery died. Everything was powerless when I first went to start the car. No lights, no alarm, nothing.
I managed to get a boost from a kindly cabbie (after giving him $40). Once the cables were hooked up, I waited about 30 seconds then turned the key to the first position and got lights, dashboard, (the dome light came on, which I promptly turned off growling). I turned it to the second position to prepare to start it. When I turned the key to start the car, there was no noise whatsoever. No clicking, no turning, no cranking. Just silence.
I've since spoken to a mechanic who suggested to me that it may be related to the car's kill-switch or alarm (my car has both, factory installed.) The kill-switch is supposed to be related to the key so I can't imagine it's that. He said something to me about resetting the car's alarm because after the battery dies it may need to be reset. If that's the problem, how do I do that? If it's not, any other ideas on what it might be?
I appreciate any help I can get. I need the car by Saturday so if I can get a quick fix, I'd much prefer that to towing it in.
Cheers!
Rick

I've had this 07 Sonata for about a year and a half now (bought it as a used rental), put many a mile on it and its been a great car.........
However, I've always wondered about something. My owners manual recommends using Quaker State motor oil. Not once but twice it states it in there. I've never heard anyone on this forum even mention using QS motor oil. Is it just MY owners manual that recommends QS or does everyone elses state the same?
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of QS (I've used Castrol for many years) but I've been using QS ever since my second oil change and I'm sure its fine..........though I DO change it every 3k miles no matter what. The upside is its aleast cheaper than Castrol.....
Does anyone else use QS? Does your manual recommend using it? I know its not a big deal..........just wondering.

I am sure I am not the first or will be the last to be snookered by dealer claims. I bought a new Sonata in 2002 and at that time bought the factory extended warranty to extended the bumper to bumper coverage to 10 years/100,00 miles. My car now has about 72,000 miles and I am quickly discovering that there are many exceptions to the warranty besides the usual wear and tear items. For instance the oxygen sensor is not covered. I call Hyundai Corporation and got told tough luck.
I kick myself because I just recommended a Sonata to a friend. Won't do that again. My suggestion is on any car take a video camera and record what every salesman says as to warranties. I made a mistake once but will never buy another Hyundai product.

I know Toyota is on a 0w-20 push, and even putting it in 09 manuals. Wondering if the new 2.4L's are still 5w-30 and 5w-20(Like my 07), or if Hyundai is moving to 0w-20.

I have been living with a rear door lock on my Sonata that hasn't been opening reliably for several months now. I was visiting my family in Pa last week and decided to visit the Hyundai dealer in Hamburg, Pa, Freedom Hyundai.
I drove in and told them that the door would not unlock with the key fob or the driver's switch. It WILL unlock the first time you try after the car has been sitting for 1/2 hour or so but if you lock and immediately unlock it, the lock will just twitch and not fully travel to the unlock position.
The service 'advisor' and finally the service manager told me that they would be happy to take the door apart to see why it doesn't work but it it were just a loose wire, it would fall under the 12,000 mile 'adjustment' warranty and NOT the bumper to bumper warranty! WHAT???????????????
So, my door doesn't work but it's not necessarily bumper to bumper problem? If I let them take their 3 hours to decide that the wire was just loose, I will owe them 3X$90 an hour or $270 to reconnect a wire that wasn't properly connected or engineered!
I wrote Hyundai and explained my displeasure. I got a call from the Claim Manager who after quite a discussion confirmed that if the wire comes loose, it is an ADJUSTMENT and not covered after 12,000 miles!!! I told him flatly that it would be a cold day in **** before I ever bought another Hyundai. Of course, he could care less.
I have been buying new cars for 50 years (every other year) and never heard of such a thing. If a part doesn't work under bumper to bumper it gets fixed. End of story. Imagine if your car stops completely and gets towed to the dealership. They spend several days diagnosing the problem and find that a wire to your computer has lost contact through corrosion or looseness. It WOULD NOT BE COVERED!!! AND if you read the fine print, the towing would also not be covered because it was not a covered repair!!!
Adjustment has always meant to me to be such things as fan belt retightening, hand brake adjustment, brake adjustment, headlight alignment. It sure as heck never meant anything that comes loose through no fault of our own!
I don't know where to go next!

It sure would help me unmeasurably if you could respond to this survey.
It's seven questions, multiple choice. It would take less than 2 minutes.
Hyundai or Kia vehicle A/C Quick SurveyIt would be even greater if you copy / pasted a link to another Hyundai or Kia owner that you know.
Thanks a lot!

When Hyundai recently unveiled the all-new 2011 Sonata in South Korea there was no mention of a V6 engine, but that’s not unusual for markets outside North America. Now word is out that there won’t be a V6 at all.
Instead, the company will offer a base four-cylinder engine as well as a direct-injection version of the same engine. As a result, expect a significant improvement in fuel-economy. Currently, the 2009 model with the 3.3-liter V6 gets 19/29 mpg.
Hyundai says that V6 models account for a small percentage of overall sales with just a 15 percent take rate. The remaining 85 percent are four-cylinders. The Korean automaker is not the exception either as in 2008, 76 percent of Honda Accords were 4-cylinder models while 90 percent of non-hybrid Toyota Camry’s were 4-cylinder models.
The V6 option is also expected to be dropped from the upcoming Tucson.
The 2011 Hyundai Sonata will get its North American debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

Japanese auto manufacturers consider Korea's Hyundai to be their biggest threat, according to a report by The Associated Press.
As automakers around the world struggle to survive the weakened economy and up-and-coming Chinese companies seek to make a name for themselves, Hyundai has emerged as a major player.
"Hyundai is awesome," Honda Motor Co. chief executive Takanobu Ito told The Associated Press. "They are undoubtedly a threat because their products are cheap, and the quality is improving."
Shiro Nakamura, senior vice-president of Nissan Motor Co., agrees, calling Hyundai "the biggest threat for the Japanese automakers."
Hyundai, with help from its subsidiary Kia, is the fifth-largest automotive group in the world, recently climbing to take 5% of the global market share despite the poor economy. Even worse news for Honda and Nissan, the Korean manufacturer is number two in Japanese sales, behind only Toyota.
In the U.S., Hyundai has been very strong, being the only manufacturer to have better sales (up 27%) in September 2009 than in the same month last year.

A Hyundai will no doubt be one of (if not the) coolest vehicle at the 2009 SEMA Show. Rhys Millen Racing, which runs a Genesis Coupe drift team, will debut a mid-engine version of Hyundai’s sports car at the aftermarket parts venue. Better yet, instead of using the turbo four-cylinder or the 3.8-liter V8 motor, Rhys Millen Racing (RMR) has opted to swap in the 4.6-liter V8 from the coupe’s luxury sedan sibling.
And as RMR is a race shop, there are promises of even more than the stock 375hp thanks to some high-compression pistons and individual throttle bodies. The factory automatic transmission will be tossed in favor of a racing-style sequential unit
RMR hopes to retain as much of the stock suspension as possible on the car (which has been code named the RM460), with a set of StopTech brakes and a new set of wheels fitted with Toyo T1R tires (measuring 245/35/20 up front and 285/30/20 out back).

Hyundai has just unveiled a “Stretch Edition” of its flagship Equus luxury sedan in Korea, measuring a massive 215-inches in length – a foot longer than the standard sedan model. For the record, that’s just over half a foot longer than the extended-wheelbase BMW 750Li. It’s also just 15-inches smaller than the simply massive Rolls-Royce Phantom.
Hyundai has already announced that the standard Equus sedan will launch in the U.S. in 2010 as a 2011 model and while the company has officially “no comment” on plans to bring the car over… we believe the fact that they sent us this press release speaks volumes.
In Korea the car is priced from 135 million won to 146 million won, which equates to $113,000 to $122,180.
While the standard 3.8-liter V6 is standard, Hyundai will offer a more powerful 5.0-liter version of the impressive 4.6-liter Tau V8. With 375hp in is 4.6-liter version, the big 5.0-liter motor makes 400hp and 343 ft-lbs of torque.
Features found inside the limousine include a power footrest with a massaging chair. Hyundai has already built three bulletproof versions of the vehicles for the Korean president.

Howdy all...
Sorry, this is probably not the most important question to be asked here, but I have exhausted all other avenues. There is a new TV Ad here in Canada centering around the "Smart" campaign, and featuring a beautiful red-headed woman "bumping" a guy's Elantra and setting off the car alarm to get his attention. Does anyone know who this woman is, if she has a website, etc.. I'm not some crazed stalker, she just looks very familiar and I'm trying to get a bit more info about her.
Any help appeciated.

I'm looking for wiring diagrams for my 2009 2.4l Sonata, but on HMA service, after I select the circuit I want to look at, the window to the right has a heading like "Schematic Diagram" but nothing shows up in the window.
I have the latest version of Flash installed and running correctly. I have also tried both IE8 and Firefox. What doesn't make sense to me is that this doesn't occur with the Shop manual tab, everything seems to show up there just fine.
Is there some trick to make it work? Is that content just not available? Thanks for any help.

When it comes to hybrid and eco-friendly technology, it looks like blue is the new green. Both Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz have chosen the color blue to represent their environmentally friendly vehicles with their respective Blue Drive and Blue Efficiency brands. Hyundai’s latest hybrid concept, the Blue-Will, is a look into the future of eco-friendly vehicles.
First introduced at the Seoul Auto Show in April, the Blue-Will made an appearance at the Hyundai exhibit at the Frankfurt Auto Show.
Concept cars usually include features that are way out there and will likely never see production. In the Blue-Will, this would include features like the LED screen under the front grille (which seems a bit strange when an internal graphic display promotes fuel saving driving habits).
Some of the Blue-Will’s features may be worth another look however. Touch screen drive selection may not appeal to those who like the feel of a stick, but with the Blue-Will’s continuously variable transmission, the only choices you’ll have are drive, reverse, neutral and park. Touch screen HVAC and entertainment controls seem like a natural evolution however, judging by the popularity of products like the iPhone.

Hyundai introduced its new Tucson SUV at the Frankfurt Auto Show.
The new Tucson, named the ix35 in Europe, is an example of what Hyundai calls its new “fluidic” design language with its sweeping, curved lines.
Hyundai lowered the overall height of the new Tucson while still promising extra legroom and headroom. A new dual-panel panoramic sunroof with ultraviolet blocking also works to create a feeling of spaciousness.
North Americans will have a choice of two engines, a 2.0l Theta-II plant rated at 161hp and weighing 22 lb less than the Theta-I. A 2.4l Theta-II will also be available. European regions will have the option of a new diesel engines, a 2.0l and a 1.7l plant, as well as the 2.0l Theta-II and a 1.6l GDI engine with ISG stop-start technology.

Hyundai introduced a futuristic crossover concept model, the ix-Metro, at the Frankfurt Auto Show.
Drawing inspiration from NASA, science fiction and pine cones (yes, pine cones), the Hyundai ix-Metro was the result of an internal design competition.
Design features such as faceted surfaces and triangulating lines along the bonnet, side and rear panels are a departure from other recent Hyundai models, both production and concept. Hyundai says the high beltline provides a protective feeling while the 20-inch wheels and flanged wheel arches give the ix-Metro a muscular stance.
Interior designer Sandy Hartono compares the interior to a pine cone with seats, cargo area and other surfaces separated by light-filled gaps, creating an appearance that seems both organic and futuristic.

Hello,
Over the past three or four months I have noticed small white patches on the hood, roof, and trunk of my black 2002 Elantra. These area's are growing in size and number and I can see that in the worst spots it's down to the e-coat (prime/base/clear coat is gone).
I realize this probably because I live in Georgia and the car is ALWAYS outside with no shade at my house and my work and I've waxed it maybe 10 times in it's entire life. So for sure, it's my own fault and not related to a Hyundai quality issue.
question is, what do I do now? There are some bare spots as big as the palm of my hand and it's gonna look pretty ghetto soon! I'm open to respraying the entire car because I'd like to keep it for another 2 or 3 years but my budget is tight. I'd be looking to spend no more than $1000. Besides a total respray do you think there is anything else I could do, perhaps even myself?
tia,
sani

I've never done brakes on a Hyundai so I'm not familiar with the rear disc set up. Is the caliper piston simply a squeeze-back-in type or is the twist & squeeze ? It's an 08 GLS if it matters. Just want to have everything handy when I do it. It's still a way off - prob about 3-4.000 miles but I just want to be prepared with the right tool and a recommendation from fellow members on pads - although I really have no complaints with the stock pads...

Record sales in Canada may convince Hyundai to open a new manufacturing plant in the country, says Steve Kelleher, President and CEO of the company's Canadian subsidiary.
Hyundai sales in Canada are projected to reach a record 95,000 in 2009, up 25 percent, while the overall market is down 15.5%. Hyundai has posted record results for seven straight months, pushing the company to sixth place in Canadian sales.
Kelleher says he hopes the record numbers will convince Hyundai to open a new manufacturing plant in Canada by 2012.
"I don't have a real firm number, but I've kind of got people listening to the idea that if we get to 150,000 vehicles annually in Canada in three years, we got to take another hard look at a plant here," Kelleher said in an interview with the Toronto Star.
Hyundai opened a plant in Bromont, Que. in 1989 but it was only operational for four years before closing as sales crashed in North America. Hyundai then began a slow recovery that picked up steam over the last five years. The company held a 1.4% market share in 1997 but recent success has raised its stake to 7.5% this year.

In a brief statement, Chrysler has announced that the Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA) is now entirely owned by the U.S. automaker, with both former partners, Mitsubishi and Hyundai, having sold their parts of the company.
This may sound like a dull bit of business news, but it could most certainly have a big impact on some of the coolest engines on the planet. Sure, the engines that originated from GEMA have found there way into less exciting vehicles like the Chrysler Sebring, but the same engines have also been the backbone of cars like the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution (pictured above) and Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.oT. The high-powered Caliber SRT4 also used a version of a GEMA engine.
Three basic engines have come out of GEMA with displacements of 1.8, 2.0 and 2.4-liters, many of which were fitted with turbochargers and superchargers to make as much as 300hp.
There is no word if the end of the GEMA partnership could affect future Hyundai and Mitsubishi powertrain developments, but you can be sure the decision had a lot to do with Chrysler's new Fiat ownership.

I just returned my Hyundai after a two years lease. I thought the process was going to be as painless as owning the car was. Boy, was I wrong.
Hyundai inspected the car and gave it a clean bill of health (no damage, Way under the authorized miles). I took it to the dealer and turned it in 10 days early. I shook the lease managers hand and asked were we all squared aways and he said "You're good to go".
Today (a month after turning in the car) I got a letter from Hyundai Financial saying I owe a $400 lease termination fee. Even better they say I have 14 days to pay it BUT they (a) dated the letter on a SUNDAY, which means it didn't go into the mail till Monday or Tuesday earliest and I just received it this Saturday (so my 14 days through no fault of my own is goin to be less than 7 by the time I can post a payment). What If I was away this week? I would be in default and never know it. NO WHERE on my lease is there any refrence to a $400 disposition fee.
This smells like a scam to me. I was inundated by Hyundai with letters concerning the end of my lease, why was this fee not mentioned? Why did they not collect it when I turned in my car instead of waiting till over a month later? All this combined with the high pressure of "pay in 14 days or else" and seemingly intentionally timing it so the consumer will have considerablly less than 14 days to respond smells of cheap high pressure/scam tactics that prior to this I would never have expected of Hyundai.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Hi
I am new to this forum, and I recently bought a 2009 Elantra SE.
My question is about the integrated iPod controller in the car stereo. I have the special Hyundai cable to connect the iPod, and it works great.
Except for one thing: There does not seem to be a STOP/PLAY button.
Or is there?

Hi all,
I've noticed that both pads on drivers side are almost gone, while the other side has about 40% remaining.
Checked the calipers, are freely moving, there is plenty of grease on bolts, piston seals OK no leaks.
Car's braking behavior is quite normal and it doesn't pull to one side. So what could be the problem?
