I've been looking at the Murano for potentially my next vehicle. I like that it's designed for adults instead of families. My biggest pet peeve from some other companies is that they make me get the backseat DVD player in order to get some other options that I want. I have no use for a backseat DVD player.

The reports I've seen on the new Murano say that the CVT is surprisingly not as annoying as previous CVTs have been. But, a thorough test drive would be needed to determine personal preference.

i happen to be a Mod on the most popular nissan forum; and i can tell you this: STAY AWAY FROM NISSAN. i have owned nothing but nissan for 12+ years, and i would NOT buy another nissan unless it was a diesel, and something that suited my needs.

1. somewhere around 2003/2004 something changed within nissan. they started using jatco cvt transmissions in their new lineups, cheaper metal components to save on weight. i cant stress to you how many braking complaints come on, because they use smaller, cheaper, lighter brake parts which results in worn/melted brake parts at 30k. i myself had to change: all rotors, pads, calipers, before 60k.
2. the infotainment crashes and they have no fixes for it
3. the cvt is a total disaster. i dont even want to get into it. its such a disaster, that nissan came out with "nissan assist", which gave all cars up to 2010, a 120kmile/10yr warranty extension on the transmission. then they realized they are changing more transmission than expected, and cut the program.

long story short: i suggested ms.imstricken NOT chose a nissan. i pointed her to KIA/HYUNDAI and it was a great decision. i am stuck with the Rogue, and i cant stand this car. the only good thing left within the nissan brand, is their solid engines. everything else went to _______.

ps: i would also stay away from german cars, unless you are leasing. you will be stuck with expensive electrical issues at 60k.

I've never heard of this 60k electrical curse on all German cars before, especially being part of a euro car club with a wide spectrum of years and models. Is there data on this?

I thought the Land Rovers et al were the electrical nightmares of the car world hailing from Britain.

I too briefly looked at the Nissan Murano.
It definitely looks like it is a generation more advanced than the Santa Fe.
I loved all the bells and whistles on the Murano, from the navigation to the inputs in the rear seats.
I thought it was comfortable, roomy and represented a good value of features for the dollar.

Then I drove it.

I'm not even going to complain about the CVT because that really doesn't bother me.
But that vehicle has the MOST vague drive of anything. I drove a Nissan Rogue and it was the same way.
It seems that at some point in the last few years, Nissan no longer has any decent driving dynamics in their cars.
They drive like a 1980s Buick and give zero feedback to the driver about what is going on with the road, tires, car, steering.
It just drives around in this very uninspiring way. I don't know how else to describe it.
The vehicle just seems to "float" around rather then giving the driver any input.

Now, I'm not going to say the Santa Fe is a sports car. Too be frank with you, if it drove like one I wouldn't be interested in it.
But after a few months when the "new car factor" wears off and you get used to all the bells and whistles, the vehicle actually has to be fun to drive.
The Murano feels like it is a very cheap car that is dressed up very well.

BINGO.

BINGO. thats nissan in a nutshell, as of ~2004

great post!

I completely agree with the "bells and whistles" comment - but that is what a good many car buyers seem to value these days. I much prefer the driving dynamics of my Saab over the SFS, so let the wife drive the SFS.

And fun to drive and road manners is the main reason many car mags rank the Mazda CX-5 in the top tier of their CUV ratings, although many on here blast the Mazda but it comes down to what you value in a auto .

I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that amongst small and mid sized CUVs females outnumber males drivers, it's definately that way with some models like the Honda CR-V and Subaru Forester.

I will admit to feeling a little less masculine when I take the wheel of the SFS, but at least it has a turbo charged engine with that " 2.0 T " on the back of it .

I also drove a Mazda MX5. I've been a big fan of mazda for years, and have enjoyed everything from a Mazda 6 to a RX-7.
When we drove the MX5, we definitely felt that it handled "sporty". But I also felt that it crashed very hard over bumps.
For me, I felt that it wouldn't be a comfortable vehicle to be in for a long road trip. I just don't know if my back could handle that car.
Additionally, I wasn't very impressed with how cheap the interior looked and felt.

Now, I'm not saying its a cheap vehicle. But EVERY manufacturer has to cut corners somewhere.
The trick is finding the vehicle that cuts the right corners for YOU.
In my eyes, the Santa Fe does the BEST job of cutting corners without sacrificing anything significant.
Sometimes its about cutting the RIGHT corners.

That said, every vehicle handles different. Some I've enjoyed, others I was impartial to, some I've even hated.
But, that is all subjective. Vehicles that I've enjoyed the handling on, other people may hate.
However, the point I was trying to strongly make is that Nissan didn't cut spending on handling.......they seem as if they simply put ZERO engineering into it.
Drive one and you'll see what I mean. If you close your eyes and ignore all the pretty lights on the dashboard in front of you.....you'll see the vehicle just has zero personality.
Especially the Nissan Rogue. That vehicle could have been SO great.
It has great fuel economy, cargo space, its packaged well, its priced well, it has all the features I want.
But I couldn't get past the feeling that the frame and powertrain were built by people who "didn't give a s___" and was then dressed up really well in hopes that people wouldn't notice.

You should check out the LWB Sante Fe instead as it rates much higher than the sport. I have one and it has good power, good handling with the 19" tires.
Not the best seat in the class but top notch in most ways - I would buy it again.
Note: I test drove the Sport but preferred the big brother instead.

Will agree on everything. Thank you guys for all of these inputs. The most problem with Nissan is CTV, even now while people have them for few-several months, they started to complain about it. Having looked at new discovery sport and the interior is sooooo cheap and old! Then went to British forums and found that it already has some TSB and people complained about 2l turbo (petrol) engine! Too bad, it was a really good car to consider.

Checked SFS and Sorento, good choice as I see and seems now there are at the first, followed by BMW X3 and NX 200t/300. F-sport would be a good idea, but it is way expensive vs. new 2016 rav4...

the old model pathfinder I like it, it is real off roader, however the new model i won't buy it.....looks like a minivan, i would rather buy a Chrysler town/country than that SUV.....LOL

We just traded an 09 Pathfinder for a 15. The 09 was a truck and the 15 is a crossover. Much smoother ride, refined interior and can still tow 5000lbs. Mpg on the new model is also very good, 19 mixed and 28hwy. We considered SantaFe and CX9 but neither are on par with Pathfinder. Also test drove a Murano, that's an oversized luxury car :)

I hate the cvt in any car. We had a nissan murano and what a piece of crap. It was always unpredictable, sometimes you would press the gas pedal and get this surprising shock of power, other times you press it and get a slow gradual build up. I always hated how upon acceleration from a stand still, it would have this slow gradual build up and then if you caught it at the wrong time, it was overly harsh and rubber bandy.
