Hello all! Just picked up my 2013 Santa Fe Limited a few days ago! Loving the vehicle so far.
Question: Are there any recent navigation updates to download? In my line of business, I rely on navigation and noticed that some maps in certain areas are not up-to-date.
Even though I will get the NAV on a LWB, personally, I think the map software has got to be one of the worst out there. My father's 2011 SF came with maps 2 years old, and did not have his street on his maps even though the street has been there for some 6 years (this is in suburbs of a significant city). I find it is very quirky in the way it operates too, but perhaps it just takes getting used to. I am used to my Garmin, which I will definitely be keeping in my vehicle as a back up (it has up-to-date maps).
Santa Fe- 7U02 update just came out. Now we look for the sale or coupon code. Please post if you hear anything. You can also contact the company and ask for a sale or coupon code just to put pressure on them.
Still waiting for the 7U02 update to come out for Canada, called today yes it is come but don't know when... You can only buy from US site if you have a US address. anyone seen a coupon code yet? $199 is pricey for a single year update.
$199 seems to be current retail in past for the couple that have purchased.
We had customer order update, I think it was ship to us, I installed it, and had to return the old card in the pre-address box from vendor.
We have received disc set for Genesis/EQUUS, takes about 4hr for the set to run.. nothing seen on Hyundai service site with dealer loginas of this posting
I noticed that you indicated that Hyundai sent you a map set for the Equus and that you have a SF. My son was driving a Equus from his work and I noticed that the screen presentation was completely different that my 2013 SF. Did you notice any difference in what you had previously seen before the update?
I 100% agree that the charge for the map updates are nothing more than highway robbery. As stated you can by a new Garmin that comes with lifetime map update that are FREE. Had I been aware of the Hyundai policy I would have not purchased a Hyundai with GPS. I have had numerous Garmin's and they blow away the Hyundai version.
I am very disappointed in my wife's navigation system. We have had 4 factory OEM systems over the years, all older and were far better than the newer Hyundai unit? My son still uses my older Garmin that has never been upgraded -no new roads etc. But if I were to choose between the two, for getting some where that I have never been ,it would be the old Garmin
Wow. I didn't realize the map updates are not free. The past year alone, my brother already received two free updates for his Ford Explorer and we don't get to have even just one free update? Ridiculous.
And there is no way to hack this? Like if one received a copy, we cannot install it on our vehicles?
Insert the SD card containing the latest files in your laptop. Using DAEMON TOOLS PRO convert the entire SD drive into a .iso file, put it out on the internet and voila!!!!! Done.
The $200 update (and it's stated in the 2014 SFS owners manual that you should update) is a joke... They did have a half off update to my 2011 Kia Sorento last Nov. (only $100) but I really did like the map display update difference, "last destinations" display for 15 seconds and the voice sounds better for any word with three syllables ! The SFS 2014 is a bigger screen and now shows the speed limit on the roads (almost every road) and the split screens for exits like I got on my update.
HACKS... nope.. they are tied to your VIN. Have to go to their site, put in your VIN and the serial of the card they send you. Then you get this long code to input on the GPS screen....
My question.. is that code tied to the car ? Can I use that code again to get to the "start update" screen and then use someone's newer USB ?
I can't find out much about the 2014 GPS except from the owner's manual. Just got it last week(12-'13). I just found out there is a HD in the head unit that you can store music and photos. Photos (slide show - really) can only be seen when the car is in park. But the dealer was not sure how big the HD was. Not much about this in the manual, nor how the GPS update works.
They also don't explain if the memory card is needed to keep the maps working or if it goes on this HD we knew nothing about. The maps were not working on the test drive but when we came back the next day and decided to buy it, the map memory card was in the GPS. The book says you "must update on that specific memory card. Never use others as they may overheat, expand and get stuck". And yes, after you pay $200 for the update they still want $10 if you need the USB. Nothing on how the 2014 memory card update works. Do you download to your PC then copy to that memory card. The dealer stated they found out the memory card is matched to the VIN. So they can't be swapped (junk yard find). How many people have a card reader and know how to use it.
I bet they would make a heck of a lot more if they dropped the upgrade to $75. For that I would update every year or so. But if you go with the Blue Link, their own product can show POI on the phone, as well as Hyundai/Kia dealer locations. Actually any smart phone with Google maps or Bing will give directions or POI. My Samung S4 is bigger then most GPS displays. When I got my 2011 Kia Sorento in Aug 2012 it had a 5 year old map. Even the Nov. 2012 update didn't show a road (RT 202 PA bypass) that was stared in 2006 and opened in 2011. Driving on grass for 6 miles.
The reason the mobile GPS units are giving away free maps... smart phones... Can't tell you the number of articles on dead technologies that include portable GPS devices. Now you can buy them for $100 with lifetime updates against a built in $800 GPS system.
Most other cars makes have $150 to $200 updated except the real expensive cars that are even higher.
Toyota uses EnTunes... basically it uses your smartphone to do everything... So everything is current.. just watch your data rates on your phone $ $ $
"Toyota Entune® App Suite 7 is a collection of popular mobile apps and in-car data services accessible from your Toyota. These services are delivered via most smartphones using hands-free Bluetooth® 8 and a cellular data connection."
Nissan has a $179 update.. again it's a memory card but needs "Your navigation system Unit Code, Serial Number, and Confirmation Code are needed in order to purchase a map update. Please click on the below link for instructions on how to obtain these numbers."
So the cards become locked to the VIN... can't just copy the card.
There are big changes coming to the Navi/onboard systems in autos. Remember that our onboard Navi's are actually working on Windows CE 5.0. The same as may of the cheap Chinese GPS's found on Alibaba and eBay.
Google/Android and Apple are already making up systems that may replace the software in future auto (poorer quality data) onboard navi systems.
[pabloottawa] Not sure if the the GPS runs off the memory card. The card is tied to your VIN... if the dealer says HE can't swap the card into different cars, what would copying it do.. it would still look at the code created when you try to run it and see it's not right.
In 2011 I purchased a Sante Fe with the in-car Navigation System. The day we drove the car off the lot the maps were out of date. I contacted the dealership and was told it would automatically update. Two years later we asked again and were told we had to pay $200 to have the maps updated. Now, the car is 3-years-old and the navigation system is so bad it is dangerous. We don’t even turn it on. For $200, we purchased a Garmin with free lifetime map updates. So we now drive a Sante Fe, with a built in navigation system, and a Garmin attached to the windshield. Friends are shocked at what we have had to do.
Why is Hyundai doing this to their customers? I tried to speak to Hyundai Customer Connect System “Lead’ Laura who gave me nothing but attitude. How outrageous to charge what you do for the system, then expect us to pay $200 each time it needs to be updated. Are you crazy???
I’m done with Hyundai. Oh yea, did I mention that the Sante Fe was my third, and now last, Hyundai purchase.
I certainly concur with what you have said. I too use my Garmin when the route is of importance. There have been too many times I have been misdirected or given late directions.
Garmin now has a unit out that you can talk too I believe.
Had I had advance knowledge of the bad Hyundai system I would have opted out.
Other than that I do like the vehicle and I would say to you that if you have been happy otherwise with the three you have had then don't let this issue keep you from owning another.
Tweeks, I agree that you were misled and I would love to see free or cheap updates more than anyone but the $200 update thing has been around (with all companies) as long as there has been built in navigation. It's only very recently that you see cheaper updates. I agree that Hyundai should get on board with this. Everyone's phone does this now and the Garmin units are awesome and cheap too.
However, as far as the accuracy of a 2011 Santa Fe, mine has been great. I've driven the vehicle across the US several times very recently on the original 2010 maps with only very minor issues (like the restaurant we wanted was now closed). It is up to date enough for me but yes, I would love a cheap upgrade. I'd be willing to pay $100 now and then but I agree $200 a year is nuts.
I am looking into buying one of the new Garmin 2798LMT. My Santa Fe has no Nav and no rearview cam and this new model can provide me with both without having to break the budget. Only 399US!
$99 and another $50 for a 16GB SD card? For that price, I'll buy one and send it to them to get the update!
