I think the RDX is smaller too. I checked it out when I brought my TSX for service at some point last year and didn't think it was an upgrade from it in size at all. The MDX is but then it's a lot more money.
I think the Santa Fe is between the RDX and MDX in size. And the value is better because it being fully loaded is still quite some $ less than the Acura.
As far as reliability, only time will tell. I had my TSX for over 5 years and never had any issues with it. Best car I've had so far. I hope in a few years I'll be able to see my Santa Fe has been just as good.
did you check the 2013 RDX - it's only slightly smaller the SFS in terms of overall interior space and the 2013 has a V6 using cylinder deactivation so it will yield 27 ~ 29 mpg on straight highway travel ( a friend has one) .
Many people will rank autos like Mercedes BMW Audi Lexus Infiniti Acura in one class and beneath that a lot of other quality makers and I think Hyundai is now in that mix - but it comes down to what each person values in a car. I'd give the edge in powertrain and chassis (suspension) to the RDX over the Hyundai - Hyundai makes very well thought out and functional designs, particularily the interior but I in terms of overall engineering I don't think it quite matches the brands widely considered in the top tier - but look at the premium you pay for those makes. Before buying the SFS I looked at a bunch of well equiped Lexus RX350 2010 and those things really had little depreciation .
Cons: Ride felt extremely rough for me...even my son commented how he felt every bump in the road; their hi-end top line stereo...just plain sucked...I tried to tune and adjust as much as possible and just could not get it to sound good; seats...my son detested the seats. He was about 5'7" then, and he could not get comfortable in the passenger seat due to the headrest....there was no position or height where he was comfortable; premium fuel....although not huge issue for me since I only put about 11-12K kms per year, but still ticks me off to have to pay an extra 10 cents a litre for gas; and finally, styling. Was definitely not a fan of outgoing design, but the styling of the new RDX is just not inspiring to me (of course, this is a personal thing), whereas the SF has more of a wow factor.
