HD Radio

I've never had an HD radio before. My 2013 Santa Fe Sport has it. The default setting in the "setup" has it off. What's the advantage(s) of using HD radio, and what's the disadvantage(s)?

If you have the HD radio in your 2013 Sport, do you have it turned on?

The few times I've used the radio has been to listen to baseball games on AM. I tried it with HD on, and it didn't sound right to me. I turned HD off.

I suspect that if I listened to FM, HD would be fine. But, in this age of Pandora and ipod's, FM doesn't get used.

FM in HD is a HUGE difference. The only downside, in my opinion, is when you are in a spotty coverage area it cuts in and out rapidly and that can get awfully annoying.

Agreed, I think it sounds amazing.. No commercials like XM but free. If you live in a major city you will benefit a lot more because the reception is better.

I've always assumed that FM in HD was just a higher fidelity version of the programing that stations on the FM dial broadcast. Aren't their commercials broadcast as well?

Just in case you are looking for stations in HD, check this site out. You can search for HD stations in your area using this site.

HD Radio | More Music. More Stations. More Features. Digital Sound. No Subscription.

Thanks for that.

I'm just not clear on 2013FantaSe's comment above about no commercials.

Until I bought the Santa Fe Sport, I had never been exposed to HD radio. I live in a decent sized city, so that reception is very good. The quality of HD is very noticeable compared to regular FM. To me, it sounds better than satellite radio.

For each HD channel, there is typically a second (or even a third) channel. For example, 100.7 in Tampa has HD1 and HD2. HD1 is the same broadcast as the regular radio station (it just sounds better). HD2 on 100.7 is a completely different station. In this case, it's called "Pride" radio, which is a station with nothing but dance music and no commercials. So, on HD radio, you have alternate stations that have no commercials.

Interesting. I'll have to play around with it. Thanks for clearing it up for me.
