Creaking dash

I posted in the minor warranty repair thread that among other issues my car was developing a creak in the dash. This noise is coming from the very forward most part of the dash were it meets the bottom of the windscreen. I know this for certain because if I apply pressure with my hand here the noise stops.

My vehicle is scheduled for it's first service next month and I was going to have this fixed. Problem is after looking at the hma service site and pulling up the crash pad removal procedures, it looks like it is not affixed to anything at the top portion closest to the wind screen. Seems to just be sitting there, with no mounting bolts or anything.

Also to remove the crash pad it looks like the entire dash needs to be taken apart. The noise has progressively been getting worse starting at the front centre part of the dash, to now running along the entire length corner to corner.

Does anyone else have this problem? Any insight? It is becoming bothersome, but I am now scared that after having them rip apart my dash they will create problems elsewhere without solving the initial problem, as it appears that it's not just a matter of tightening some screws.

On my previous vehicle, I had a squeak that I pinned down to where the dash met the bottom of the windshield. I was able to take some weather stripping and stuff it in the seam in that area, and sink it down enough to where it really wasn't visible. It stopped the squeak.

Not sure if this is an option in your case, but I thought I'd mention it.

Thanks Mattmilw,

I was thinking the same thing, only thing is the sound is coming from underneath the dash and not from contact with the bottom of the windscreen. I guess I could still give it a try as this might force enough pressure to push the dash down and stop the noise. Ya I'll give it a go.

Okay, I put some weather stripping between the base of the windscreen and the dash to try and stop the creaking noise. Before i did this I noticed about a 1-1.5cm gap between the base of the windscreen and the dash from corner to corner.

There is already weather stripping in place from the factory on the dash but there is that big gap, so it doesn't contact the windscreen, doesn't seem like the fit is correct. Do others have this gap? Easy to check with a flashlight between the base of windscreen and where the dash meet. I can clearly see a gap and the factory weather stripping.

Sorry to hear about this Jet. I had the same thing on my highlander, except an extremely annoying tapping sound. I had it fixed but every now and then, I hear it under certain conditions.

W.r.t. tearing the dash apart, I had to have the A/C evaporator changed and they had to tear mine to bear bones. The service manager assured me that they in fact put MORE padding and tape on the edges and clips to prevent squeaks and rattles than what comes from factory. In fact, the dash was whisper quiet after their work. BUT, that was this dealer. Not sure that all dealers take the same sort of care.

Hope you get this fixed. Squeaks and rattles really bother me. I am the kind of owner that will turn off the music while driving and ask my wife or son "did you hear that pop/squeak/noise? Where is it coming from...try to pin point it". The noises in the car don't bother them, but when I do that, it drives them nuts!

Garage
I had a creak in my dash on a really cold morning earlier this week, it went away after a little while and hasn't come back. I'd never heard it before, and couldn't find the exact source.

Same here. Coming from the middle of the dash way up front by the windshield. Went away after maybe one minute of occasional creaks.

Last week, while I was at the dealership I had them check the seat rocking issue, the creaking noise and the wind noise when cruising on hwy. New seat rails are being ordered, creaking noise heard by two techs but couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from...told me to monitor it and to bring it if it got any worse. As for the wind noise, they said hopefully Hyundai Canada issues a TSB soon so it could be fixed. Truth be told, once radio is on or normal conversation is going on inside the cabin, noise is simply inexistent.

Mattmilw saved the day, I put about a 4" piece of weather stripping in between the dash and windscreen to test things out. On the drive to and from work, which is where the creaks are really prominent there wasn't a peep. Super quiet once again.

I plan on running weather stripping all along the dash today and be done with this. As Luck stated, he was fortunate in the way his dealer handled tearing apart his dash but I may not be so fortunate. It looks like I won't have to take it in to have this problem fixed by them as this seems to have fixed it for me.

Thanks for the help again everyone.
