What makes pinpointing the source difficult is the sound bounces off the windshield. What seemed to be coming from dead center in the beginning is now coming out from the passenger side, front.

I'm hesitant to take it to the dealer because it's one of those things I feel might create more problems once they start taking the dash apart. I might still do it later on but I'll see how far I go with the silicone spray.

Jetracer, did you push the weatherstripping all the way into the gap or do you have some of it poking out? I pushed mine all the way in and it seems the cavity back there is big enough to gobble up the two pieces I pushed in with no effect.

Hey normandelli,

No I didn't push the weatherstripping all the way down. It's probably about half way down jammed tightly between windshield and dash, slightly visible seated in the driving position. It seems to me that if you push it down too far it will just fall through the gap. I put three pieces in, one 4" in the centre and one 4" on either side of the dash.

I've managed to pull out the foam and weatherstripping that I jammed behind the dash earlier. I also sprayed 3M wet silicone lubricant down every suspect gap and crevice.

Yup, the creak is still there. Not really a creak but more like a plastic snapping sound and it seems to be coming from deeper within the dash, not easily accessible.

Do you have the leather interior? I was getting squeaking from the split rear seat backs rubbing against the center arm rest. You can tell if that's it by dropping the arm rest down.

I tried using leather conditioner on the surfaces, and it improved, but didn't eliminate the squeaks. I then followed pare_John's suggestion. I bought some adhesive backed felt and applied it to each of the surfaces of the seat backs's that face the arm rest. Fixed it completely.

Creak in Dash

You're not alone Luck11. These noises drive me bonkers. I have a 2010 SF and there has been a tapping coming from the left front fender area for some time. Had the dealer look at it and they opened up the whole dash, removed windshield and found some welds had broken in the fender to frame join. Fixed it. 3 weeks later it's back. Going back to dealer in late jan, will keep you posted if you like.

W.r.t. tearing the dash apart, I had to have the A/C evaporator changed and they had to tear mine to bear bones. The service manager assured me that they in fact put MORE padding and tape on the edges and clips to prevent squeaks and rattles than what comes from factory. In fact, the dash was whisper quiet after their work. BUT, that was this dealer. Not sure that all dealers take the same sort of care.

Hope you get this fixed. Squeaks and rattles really bother me. I am the kind of owner that will turn off the music while driving and ask my wife or son "did you hear that pop/squeak/noise? Where is it coming from...try to pin point it". The noises in the car don't bother them, but when I do that, it drives them nuts!

Yes I have the leather interior but the noise is distinctly coming from inside the dash. I'm familiar with the seat noises in the back and I'm quite okay with those. They're an easy fix since they're easily accessible.

But the dash... ugh. As tempted as I am to take it to service, I'll see if I can poke around some more and see what I find.

OMG 7 weeks after I picked this up, I heard this tonight on my way to work and it's driving me crazy. It was too loud and seemed like coming from the center dash, sort of like behind the navigation screen. I never had this problem before and it just came on. I can deal with the wind noise that I can also hear, but not this freakin creaking sound. It is more and more that I am hating on this car and regret that I picked this over Explorer.

Dealer better have a fix for this

I guess I could still give it a try as this might force enough pressure to push the dash down and stop the noise. Ya I'll give it a go.

When I bring my vehicle for my first oil change, which I might do a lot sooner than I am supposed to because this creaking sound will never be bearable to me, I will print off this whole thread for them to read. I have also emailed this link to Hyundai.
