That review considers the Santa Fe Sport as a "compact" - but to me a compact is small like a Ford Focus.

I do know that North Americans and Europeans have differing views on what size cars are needed but our class definitions, like compact, are universal.

Who is trying to reinvent what definitions?

I think it meant that it would be competing with compact SUV's such as the Ford Escape, Honda CRV, etc. as well as medium sized SUV's like the Ford Edge instead of say full size SUV's like the Ford Explorer or larger. Not that it was a compact car like a Focus, etc.

I understand that Ford Kuga/Escape (both based on the Focus), Honda CRV (based on the Civic), Hyundai iX35/Tucson (based on the i30/Elantra) and Kia Sportage (also based on the i30/Elantra) are all compact SUVs or compact crossovers - but the Santa Fe is bigger than all of those even in Sport form.

The reviews are superb, and I suspect that the Santa Fe will do for the CUV class what the Sonata did for Hyundai in the entry family sedan. Note, however that only turbos were evaluated, and that all the reviewers were treated to a lovely time at the Montage in Deer Vally, UT. This practice is common in the auto industry.
