With the complete rebuild of the SF due in Sept of 2011 I would like to ask the question to all owners;

"What do you want to see changed in the new generation 2012 version?"

Personally I would like to see;

- complete new body style
- complete new suspension incl tires, springs & shocks. To eliminate the harsh ride over road seams,tracks and potholes
- lower driving position
- better distinction between models. Currently can not tell other than chrome on Ltd soor handles and very small badge on rear. Maybe different wheels or larger badging?
- better selection of exterior & interior colors
- leather in the Ltd is nothing but high grade vinyl. Offer cloth upholstery in Ltd.
- improved fuel mileage however current is great!
- reduce the wind noise at hwy speeds. This is 2011 and wind noise should not even be evident
- offer electric hatch as an option
- back up camera standard on Sport and Ltd
- move from SUV to CUV

Looking forward to comments and also looking forward to the 2012. This is a great SUV and holds top spot in the ratings it can only get better when one looks at the new Sonata, Tuscon and Elantra.

"What do you want to see changed in the new generation 2012 version?"</span>

Personally I would like to see;

- complete new body style - better aerodynamics but still understated

- complete new suspension incl tires, springs & shocks. To eliminate the harsh ride over road seams,tracks and potholes - keep the SAME suspension as 2010-2011 on European models, it's firm and handles well

- lower driving position - why, it's not a sports car

- better distinction between models. Currently can not tell other than chrome on Ltd soor handles and very small badge on rear. Maybe different wheels or larger badging? - as long as there's a debadging option for those who don't need to boast about their purchase

- better selection of exterior & interior colors - agreed, including a light grey interior

- leather in the Ltd is nothing but high grade vinyl. Offer cloth upholstery in Ltd. - offer the Limited in Europe with high grade leather and more equipment than Premium

- improved fuel mileage however current is great! - you'll need the diesel for that

- reduce the wind noise at hwy speeds. This is 2011 and wind noise should not even be evident - agreed

- offer electric hatch as an option - offer the twin sunroof from the Kia Sorento, the structure is clearly designed for it

- back up camera standard on Sport and Ltd

- move from SUV to CUV - no, stay as SUV and improve the off-road protection

Looking forward to comments and also looking forward to the 2012. This is a great SUV and holds top spot in the ratings it can only get better when one looks at the new Sonata, Tuscon and Elantra.

<span style="color:#FF0000">The only thing I'd add is to distance the IX45 for Europe from the Santa Fe for North America, the two different cultures deserve different vehicles even if derived from the same source.

After living with a Subaru Forster for 4 years, the ride and quietness of the Santy's cab is great; so that wasn't an issue for me. As for driving height, I love it. I'm 6'4 and looking down on others beats the heck out of a low seating position.

I try and take off the badges on everything I own, my bike is really stripped down now---no chrome---love the all black look. I really got what I wanted black on black, but I might have looked at other exterior colors if there was a darker interior (I've got 3 dogs).

I took off my top cross bars and that took away a considerable amount of wind noise, before that it was still way quieter than my Forester.

The 3.5L engine sold me on the SUV as soon as I hit the gas pedal---at 20+ mpg and that pickup, I couldn't be happier. Love my Santa Fe.

Leave it as is. At least as close to current as possible. :thumbsup:

I don't like the design trend of Hyundai's new models. When the 2012's get revealed, I just may grab a 2011.
You are making a big mistake. I was at the New York Auto Press Release Day as a guest of HYundai as a Think Tank member and I will tell you that the unvailing of the new Santa Fe was just wow. Absolutely beautiful with its new Fluid Sculpture design and total new look, it is outstanding and best of all it will get 33 mpg with the GDI 4 cylinder that is in the Sonata. They will also have a turbo version as well as an extended Santa Fe that will have three row seating and will be powered by the six cylinder that is in the new Azera. July 16th will be the availability date for the sport model and the larger Santa Fe will be at the end of the year. In both cases, worth the wait.

Got you beat by 2". I'm 6'6" and for me, the seat height is just right, I can just slide my rear-end sideways and I'm in. No need to climb up or bend down. Perfect! :grin:

We should have a tall person contest!! :grin::thumbsup: - 6'5" or ~ 196cm..
What impressed me the most is that I can see through the windshield and not have to stick my head out of the sunroof... Really it is a liberating experience and the seat adjustment is just dandy!! I am certain I am going to love it.

Why turn the Santa Fe into a CUV? From your description of what you'd like it to become, you don't want it to be an SUV anyway. Why not leave the SF as an SUV, and come up with a new CUV model that acts like the sports car you envision? I need the ground clearance and the stiffer suspension.

Our Santa Fe's are CUV's (Crossover Utility Vehicle) based on the Sonata chassis. A SUV (Sport Utility Vehicle) is based on a light truck chassis, like a Chevy Suburban or Ford Explorer. I also agree with many of the original posters suggestions. My biggest complaint is the lack of room for us big guys. The power seat does not go low enough (especially with a sun roof), so I have to lay the seat back to fit...not the best position for view or safety. Also the seat bottoms are short and do not support a longer leg. I just accept it as a Korean design that works for most shorter drivers.

Don't get me wrong, the Santa Fe is a great vehicle, it just needs to improve with each new generation, not go backwards and go cheap. Little things that have been lost (cheap); working lights in the bumpers, rear hatch bumper protector, standard cargo cross rails, monochrome grill, etc.

Dern, you beat me by 6 minutes.

The only thing that really needs improved is the ride quality. It's jarring, to say the least.

That's an out-of-date definition - it doesn't apply to SUVs in RoW and even real off-roaders like Land-Rover and Range-Rover will have monocoque integral construction in their forthcoming models.
SUV's have a dedicated chassis that belongs only to them (or other trucks). Crossovers share a chassis design with another vehicle type (cars, vans). The Santa Fe shares its chassis with a car, the Sonata, hence it is a CUV.

Improvements are always warranted (a bit better ride-less rattles). However, I hope they don't make the 2012 as "Swoopy" as the Tuscon-Elantra. I sat In a new 2012 Elantra while I was waiting for an oil change for my wife's 2010 Elantra. I immediately DISLIKED it. I felt claustraphobic. The seats are too low/the cowl too high and most importantly the VISIBILITY is very poor due to the redesign. So glad we have the 2010 (Santa Fe and Elantra) with the spacious OPEN feeling and great visibility. I understand a lot of the new vehicles have this new swoopy styling but (IMHO) it sacrifices interior comfort and outward visibility.

SF does not share a chassis with the Sonata? The New Sorrento does share the SF chassis. This vehicle is classed as an SUV according to Hyundai marketing.

That's why I got the base model (GL up here in Canada), It has manual seat which gave me the extra space I needed. I was looking and a used 2008 Limited but I couldn't fit in it properly. That's when the salesman told me about the base model with manual seat having more space. He was right. 5 days later, I was out the door with my brand new SF. :grin:

BTW, I'm 6'6" and just over 300lbs. :w00t:

I would like it to be just like the first generation SF was. Not meaning to look exactly like it, but rather, to be like NOTHING ELSE on the road and still fabulous to look at. When we bought our first one in 2002, people noticed it and other SF drivers would wave. It was such a unique car and it was like being in a small club. We love our Tucson, but if the 3rd-gen SF knocks our socks off (like the 1st gen did), I'll trade it in in a heartbeat! The Tucson is a great vehicle, but there is an awful lot of "me-too" in it with Nissan, Lexus, Toyota, etc. There was NEVER another 1st gen Santa Fe; It was unmistakable.

Am I asking for too much? Probably, but you posed the question, right? :)

tim B)

PS- Has ANYONE heard ANYTHING officially about this vehicle? All I have heard is "Late 2011", and that was a year ago. If you search the internet for 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe, you get garbage links and rumors.

I haven't seen Hyundai keep anything under wraps this tightly since the Genesis came out. Because the CM body came out in Korea one full model year ahead of North America, we had plenty of time to look at the KDM production versions and get a very good idea as to what was in store for us over here. It seems that Hyundai has no intentions of staggering this model release and man are they keeping a tight lid on things. We haven't seen diddly....not one spy shot, not one rendering, not one sketch; NOTHING. Zip, zilch, nada.

My advice. Keep your ear to the ground at Hyundai News and when Hyundai has something to say officially, this is where it'll pop up.

In the past, it's been possible to get good information by using the internet to monitor press releases and motor magazines in North America, Europe, Australasia and the Far East but the next Santa Fe details will be harder than any to second guess because no-one outside the company knows how much separation there will be between different market versions. We've already seen major input from the European R&D centre at Russelsheim in Germany and there may be completely different models for North America and Europe although sharing the same platform, in the same way that Sonata and I40 are quite different.

For Europe and Asia, the SF replacement is likely to be called IX45 so it'll be worth keeping an eye on rumour for both Santa Fe and IX45. It may also be useful to watch for rumour on VeraCruz and IX55.

The 2010 Kia Sorento doesn't give anything away - it's the same underneath as the 2010-2011 Santa Fe which may indicate no engineering changes - it might also indicate that the Kia Sorento is built on the "old" SF platform but that doesn't make sense given they're built in the same plant for the North America market.

Keep searching, we're all interested in knowing!

I've been screaming this for YEARS!!! They are just fabulous, from everything I have read. Maybe, if we all sit in lotus position and chant, "deeeee-zulllll, deeeee-zulllll, ..."! :)

With the complete rebuild of the SF due in Sept of 2011 I would like to ask the question to all owners;
"What do you want to see changed in the new generation 2012 version?"

I am very satisfied with the quality overall.
My priorities would be:
  1. better seats: need more leg and side support
  2. smoother accelerator and break pedals: a bit too stiff in city
  3. better air conditioning on top trim: to me the current rear vents are useless.
  4. less squeaks: I currently need to spray some silicon here and there
  5. higher city fuel efficiency, hwy is ok by me

I will definitely buy the next SF if top 2 items are addressed.

The 2012 Kia Sorento's (2012 VINs) are showing up in Southern US dealer inventory w/o a Kia announcement along the 2012 Sedonas (again with no KIA announcement).

Changes? Who knows?
Update from local Kia dealer:

1. Will go on sale late this month or early next month

2. Will have direct injected 191 HP I4 - 34 mpg highway.

3. EX, SX - UVO entertainment w/backup camera, power passenger seat, cooled drivers seat, powered folding mirrors, heated steering wheel, memory seat/mirrors, LED interior illumination.

You'll be screaming 'til you lose your voice. Hyundai has already put their foot down and stubbornly said no diesels for North America....period. This really irritates me as I'd rather see more money put into diesel and natural gas technology instead of hybrids and their toxic batteries.
