Hi has anyone had the OEM remote start installed? The dealer phoned said they are available now-cost $568. He said they are a 2-way system, unfortunately you will have a separate button fob?
You would have thought they could have integrated them into one?

Sounds like an aftermarket install.

I'm just guessing but it seems that a factory unit would replace the standard proximity remotes with those that have the extended range for the remote starter.

It might be me as I go by the adage that "you can tell when a dealer/salesman is lying - his lips are moving".

The new system has two options.

1. You use your OEM fob and it can be programmed to auto start your car (two button press I believe), but the range is limited to 100 ft or so....the range of your OEM remote.

2. You can also use the remote start remotes that have range of 1000 or 2000 ft...cannot recall. EbonySti would know for sure.

So, essentially, you end up with 4 remotes. If you don't think you will need to remote start from a long distance (ie. over 100 ft) then you can just carry your OEM with proximity. If you need longer distance, you need to carry both.

Not the ideal one-fob option, but better than the previous system.

Anything that doesn't interface with the proximity key would be useless to me.

I'd opt for the smart phone options (assuming you have one) that allows you to use a phone app for remote start - regardless of range. This, like the Blue Link option, allows you to just have the oem proximity key and still get the benefit of remote start without having to carry extra key fobs around with you.

I transitioned from the Santa Fe Sport to the LWB and went from Blue Link to the long range remote start. I did not like Blue Link..it was inconsistent, it was a hassle to start the car (had to stop and look at my phone to find my app), and the lights flashing while the car was running drove me batty:). I had someone ask if someone needed help in the car with the hazards on...I had to say no..it was just my remote start. I did choose to use the FOB because it is push and walk...I work in a hospital and because of all the wireless things and such(not sure the technical reason) I needed the long distance one. Works great for me and no flashing lights!!!! Yes, the FOB takes up space but for me it was a much better option. I had it put in at the dealers before I picked up my car.

Hi...can you clarify if you got the Hyundai remote start? ie. the new Hyundai OEM model that is essentially plug and play (only 1 wire to solder) or did you purchase an after market?

I ask, because I just had the newly released Hyundai 2-way remote start installed in my XL ( LWB ), and it has the flashing lights. I confirmed with folks in another thread (Remote Start), and my dealer confirmed with Hyundai Canada, that the flashing lights is normal for "safety reasons". Personally, I think it is a massive attention getter and drives me nuts. Never had this on ANY after market remote starts I have had in my last 4 vehicles (16+ years).

Curious what, if anything, was done to get rid of the flashing lights?

So it is an aftermarket. That would explain it. Mine is a Hyundai branded 2-way. I believe it is made by DEI. It too has long range, but the flashing lights is par for the course. I had a Viper 5904 ready to go, but opted for the Hyundai OEM and sold the Viper for a couple of reasons:

1. It's OEM product which means its covered under the full car warranty.

2. Because of of #1, if there are any issues with the remote starter or caused by it at some point, dealer has to take care of it. If I had a Viper, they could easily point to the remote starter and avoid any repairs under warranty.

3. The Hyundai remote starter fob is much smaller than the Viper which I found bulky.

4. Really nice options and features with the Viper, but frankly, just like my 5901 before, unlikely that I would ever use them.

Canadian HD, thank you.

ARS called me back and the person was very helpful. She explained that the lights can flash or stay on continuously during remote start run-time. Dealer can make the change. AND...she is calling the dealer right now to tell them how to do it!!

As far as that issue with the lights flashing when a door is opened, she is going to speak with their engineers overseas to try to figure that one out. Said she has never heard of this issue. She will contact me directly when she hears back.

The ARS rep called me back to correct. It seems that the remote starter with proximity key CANNOT be changed to just lights on. For "safety reasons" HQ decided not to allow the option. However, for remote starters with key ignition, you CAN choose between lights always on, or flashing during the remote start run-time.

I did note to her that having lights on is not a problem for safety reasons, but choice of always on vs flashing should also be offered for vehicles with proximity keys.

She agreed and said she will raise it with HQ and it should be easy enough to implement on future batches. Not sure if existing could be updated or not.

Anyway, to deal with the flashing on door opening issue, she is having the dealer completely strip out the remote start and reinstall from scratch to ensure it was done properly.

Again, I knew I should have waited to have this thing installed so I wasn't the guinea pig. Now my car is being pulled apart again. The thought annoys me. Mad at myself for not being more patient and just waiting a month or two.

Ok so I called the ARS rep yesturday. As far as the remote starting with the factory remote, this is possible with the prox key, not with the key ignition (which I have) :-( Regarding the flashing lights with remote start, she told me the manual is incorrect. There is no way of changing to parking lights on steady regardless of prox or keyed ignition.

Another feature I dislike about this remote start. When you remote start, you have something like 30 seconds after opening any door (including the hatch) to press the start button twice in order to disengage the remote start have the engine running on its own. If not, the engine shuts down. Drives me nuts because if I remote start coming from grocery store and have a cart full of groceries, and as I approach the vehicle and remote open the hatch, it leaves me about 15 seconds to leave the grocery cart, scramble to get in the car and press the Start button twice. WTF??? Who was the brain wave that designed that?

Yeah, sure, one could just restart the car, but starting the car creates alot of unnecessary wear on the engine. At the very least, there should have been an option to turn this feature off.

Think I am going with the after market remote- Why because my dealer has installed 2 unsuccessfully. They suggested Mass electronics with a 3 year warranty installed at the dealership. They offer 1 and 2 way remotes for the push button start XL. Price is about the same as the OEM unit(1 way) and $50 more for the 2 way

Yeah I just chose to go with they hyundai one because it integrates alot easier than aftermarket. Also me having the keyed ignition, I can just get a key cut and use the remote start fob and a key for the winter months eliminating the need for 2 fobs.

I'm actually a little dumbfounded they didn't offer remote start from the factory. In this day in age many manufacturers do....

This guy managed to hook up a remote start on his Kia Optima's factory key fob so that he only has to carry one key fob. I wonder if this could be done on the Santa Fe.

You can. The new remote start kit that came out for SF (Sport and LWB / XL) a month or so ago automatically comes with the ability of remote starting using your proximity key fob by hitting lock, then panic. It's the same button positioning as the remote start fob (top button then bottom button). The problem is that the proximity key fob has very limited range...ie. under 100 ft. presuming line of sight. If you need longer range, you need to have the remote start fob which has range of 1000-2000ft...can't remember off the top of my head.

For those of us using Bluelink to remote start our cars, it pays to read the messages that you get when you use the service. I was getting frustrated because sometimes it would work, and sometimes it wouldn't. I would get seemingly random messages stating that the remote start request did not go through. I thought it might be an indication that the service was unreliable.

Nope. The last time it didn't go through, I actually the read the fine print. It reminded me that the car needed to be locked for the remote start to work. Duh. I park my car in my garage, and sometimesI lock it and sometimes I don't. That is why the remote start would work sometimes and not others.

Now I know, and it is no longer an issue!

Well, just called dealer to get update on my vehicle, and it seems that even with the new remote start installed, they are still having the same issues, namely:

1. Open trunk, close trunk, then open any door (incl trunk) and parking lights flash 30 times.

2. Remote start car with remote start fob, unlock doors, press and hold power trunk release and trunk does not open. I need to manually open the trunk via the release near license plate.

3. Remote start car with proximity key fob, press unlock to unlock doors, and they will not unlock. I have to press the unlock/lock button on the door handle.

Who knows if there are other quirks that I have not yet discovered.

Sounds to me that this remote start is very buggy and needs a great deal more testing to deal with the issues. AND...it ain't going to be on my XL!!

Going there for 5 pm, taking my XL whether issues have been resolved or not. If not, may request a full refund, or if they give me assurances that they will deal with issues and update software or remote start before winter, I will wait, presuming that if they do not follow through, I can still get my refund then.

Maybe if I wait for a software upgrade, they will deal with some of dumb settings like lights flashing during remote start, or more importantly, the absolutely idiotic auto-engine kill 30 seconds after opening a door. This latter one drives me nuts. Even this weekend, came off soccer field with a bag of soccer balls and knapsack. Auto started car since it was very hot and opened hatch to load stuff, and forgot about engine kill after 30 seconds. So I was almost done loading stuff and talking to my son, engine turns off. Another 15-20 seconds, I would have been in the car and could have switched over. Grrrr!!!

At this point, I am honestly recommending AGAINST the Hyundai remote start, even if nothing else, because of the engine kill setting.

Update: I understand from another forum member that he too is experiencing some of the issues I have noted.

Well, the ARS call center could not solve and said it has taken it as far as it can. The dealer has opened a case file with Hyundai tech support now. Hope to hear back in a few days. Either I wait for a fix, or demand they completely uninstall it and give me a full refund.
