Range (km/mi) - inaccurate?

When I got the Santa Fe, I expected that my range would by much higher than my old 2000 Jeep Cherokee XJ 4.0L. However, every time I fill up the tank, the total range shown on the dashboard is just under 400km.

During the xmas vacation, we took my father in law's 2012 Sorento AWD 3.5L (because the winter tires that came with the SF have some defect - another post..).

I noticed that upon filling up the Sorento, the range it shows is around 625km... almost double what the SF has, and it is accurate as it turns out.

Is this normal? Both have pretty much the same size engine, AWD, same size tank - how can the difference be so huge. My dashboard is in fact set for KM, not mi.

When I was looking to buy a replacement for my Jeep, I looked at the Sorento but decided to go with the Hyundai instead. Right now, after having driven the 2012 Sorento, I wish that was what I got (not just for this reason, but quite a few others)

Still - is it true that the SF has crappy mileage? Next time I fill up I will reset the trip meter and see if it coincides with the range - perhaps the gage/sensor is wrong.

CM series Santa Fe has always had very pessimistic range reading, mostly because it has always had very pessimistic view of remaining fuel level.
At least on the earlier CM, you could drive until the "30" mile range shifted to "---", then drive another 60 easily. I have yet to get as many as 18 gallons into my own 20 gallon tank after driving that way. My best guess is that there's a good 3 gallons missing from the projected range, perhaps even a bit more.

An equivalent Sorento isn't going to be any different in terms of actual mileage. All of these vehicles have the drag coefficient of a brick and weigh in the neighborhood of 4000 pounds. Don't expect too much.

Well when I fill up might it will register 550 or higher depending on the kick off point of the pump and the needle is just above the full mark. You may have bad tank sensors which is common fail point up to 2008 builds. Its working gas gauge. Fill up and do a MPG test on a highway drive. You will see what you get when you've fill back up again. Best to use the same station pump for the same kick out point if you can. That really all that matters. You will know how much gas you have left from the OEM tank spec's of you build. Details of what you have were not very clear to me even looking at the left side info has different year. Never the less this process is valid.

I think the highest I have ever seen after long highway driving was on the order of 325 mile range. Very pessimistic number compared to reality, and again, based upon a faulty assumption about remaining fuel levels.

As I recall doing the calculations once, the thing seems to think that it has about a 16.5 gallon tank since it seems to assume zero range at about 3.5 gallons remaining. We long ago chuckled that it looked like either the senders and/or the algorithm came out of an old Sonata with a smaller tank.
