I have a 2010 Santa fe that will some times not start when using the key. The starter turns just fine but the engine won't fire up. However, with the remote starter it will always start.
The vehicle is under warranty for a few more weeks but the mechanic couldn't diagnose anything because it started just fine in the shop. Any ideas?
"The starter turns just fine" would seem to indicate the the OP does not have a battery issue.
@Method
Is your remote starter factory or 3rd party?
Canadian vehicle?
Just be 100% sure that they recorded your visit with your specific complaint, and that you have that information on a work order, even if they aren't in a position to diagnose it at the moment. You want it established that the problem occurred prior to warranty expiration.

I'm not sure about the SF but Chrysler products will refuse to fire up if the battery voltage is below 12V. The car will crank over but not start and no code is thrown.
In my experience, the CM series will start up if there's enough left to turn the starter, and voltage is being drawn down below 12V when the starter is really slow.
I'm familiar with the issue you mention, though. Manufacturers and SAE cranking voltage specs don't always seem to see eye to eye.
That said, remember that the OP says the starter turns "just fine", which to me, would indicate turning at a normal speed, and that won't happen if the voltage has dropped significantly.
Agreed with Canderson. Keep in mind that it starts 100% of the time with the remote start... I'm thinking the problem may be closer to the ignition switch.
Just out of curiosity, did this ever get resolved? I'm having the same problem.
Mine is very intermittent...maybe once every few weeks or so. It has always worked with the remote start though. It is a third party remote starter, and it is a Canadian vehicle (to answer canderson's questions).
I tested battery voltage yesterday and it was 12.87...so it shouldn't be a battery issue.
It's the exact same symptoms, however, now it's just intermittent instead of happening all the time. This may sound like a stupid question...but is it possible that a key can lose it's programming?
You have two keys. I see no mention that it occurs with both keys. Very important verification. Also as mentioned be certain you have a work order logged for this problem while the warranty is in effect. The problem will be grandfathered until its resolved. What ever has failed will be covered. Even if its simply a key which they charge an arm and a leg for anyway.
Unfortunately I'm now off warranty (112K), but I believe the original poster said he still is.
Since the problem is so intermittent, it's tough to test with both keys...at this point (and I'm the individual who drives the vehicle 95% of the time), it has only happened with my keys.
Sounds like the ignition switch or the key program. But like Tripplec said, get the problems workordered with the dealer before the warranty runs out
