2012 Santy GLS AWD 3.5 Rear Shock Replacement

I use my Santy as a work vehicle and it takes some abuse. It is loaded with a half ton plus constant load in the cargo area, seats folded down. I've had some coil rites air helper springs on there since the get go, improved it a bit but still sagged. Anyhow after almost 2 years and 31k miles one of the bags blew.

Going to replace them with a custom coil spring. Wanted to replace the rear shocks with something heavier duty at the same time but can only find the OE replacements, or the Monroe OESpectrum/Monroe Reflex combo. Potentially the KYB Excel G but it never lists the 2012 specifically.

Anyone have any insights on what would handle the load the best.

Thanks

The KYB is a pretty beefy shock. Their "OEM" replacement (the Excel-G) in a cut-away certainly looks more substantial than other shocks that claim to be "OEM quality" replacements. Would have been my preference.

However, like you, I've not yet seen them claim to have rear shocks for the Santa Fe. The other day, I recommended front struts (335619/335620 are the R/L part numbers for your vehicle if you ever need those) from KYB. I'm surprised that they still don't show a sub for the shocks. Same with the Sorento, as they'd be the same part.

So that leaves you with Monroe or similar for that 1,000 pound load -- more than I'd be comfortable sticking in the back of mine! Must be a wild ride without a load back there (or even with!).

The Reflex (911301) is end-of-life, so inventory may be a bit spotty. That's OK .. of the two available, it would NOT have been my first choice from Monroe. Instead, I'd look at the 37322 OEM Spectrum version.

I was actually just doing due diligence when I walked into the Hyundai dealership. I was in the "I'd never be caught dead in a Hyundai camp" prior. Having decided to go out on my own, I needed a more fuel efficient non bank busting vehicle, vs. the Expedition, Yukon/Tahoes I had previously been working out of. The American nameplates I test drove had such atrocious quality that I needed to go looking elsewhere.... Was very pleasantly surprised by the Santy.... Fingers crossed it's has taken all that I've thrown at it so far.

It actually rides pretty good loaded and unloaded (With two working air helper springs.) Rear sags for sure. Now with the one blown spring it definitely rides badly. Will have to limp around for a couple of weeks while they build the custom spring...

I guess currently I have only two rear off the shelf shock option - the monroe oespectrum... or OEM...
Anyone know of a reasonably priced custom outfit perhaps?

Thanks

Try this.

Valley Spring does not have a website. Their phone number is 1-800-287-2645. . The springs are fabricated by Valley Spring, custom made so it is about a 2-3 week wait. They are progressive springs, without a load the ride will be similar to the factory springs, loaded they have a spring rate of 485# per inch.

Thanks

I actually ordered a custom spring already.
Supposed to be good for a 1300lb constant load, riding 3/4" higher than stock. Hopefully it works out like that in real life and not just the spec sheet....

That's why i wanted some shock recommendations as well.

Wondering if I should do the stabilizer links as well to the metal but scared it might be too stiff...

Has anyone replace a rear shock? I want to know if there is a welded bracket on the shock body. It looks like there is one to hold on some sort of protector? Any help appreciated?

I emailed KYB as well and they said supposedly they are working on a rear now, available late this year. Fingers crossed.
