Hitch Install

I bought a Reese class III hitch for the SF and installed it today. Installing the hitch took 20 minutes at most. Cleaning out the blind nuts in the SF frame to mount the hitch took 2 freaking hours. If you are thinking about a hitch install "someday", and live in a northern environment, spend some time now cleaning and capping the four blind nuts now. The threads are 10mm x 1.25.

I have a UHaul Class III hitch on mine but I only really use it for a bike rack and some bikes. Would like to know that I can tow something if need be...

Are you planning on towing with it? I'm interested to know what the car can or more importantly cannot handle. I have a US 2012 GLS v6 AWD but I remember not being able to get the hitch at the dealer because they said there was no tow package. So for sure I don't have a tranny cooler or anything else. I think non US were rated for 3500lbs???

The adjustable height ball mount with a ball post that has three ball selections plus a 2" receiver plug, a hitch mounted 4 pin power connector and a handy little circuit tester all came to $120 today. The hitch was $195 and the harness another $55. All in, $370 for a full class III setup.

Without a tranny cooler, as you can probably imagine, it depends a LOT on where you plan to be towing, and how much. There's a lot of difference between rolling into the diner in Roscoe, NY in those 'hills' vs. taking it to Steamboat Springs here in the mountains of Colorado. I'd never take anything NEAR 3500# into the mountains here with your current setup, though I'd not hesitate to take my '08 Limited there with the same load.

The vehicle is heavy enough to where load stability should not be any issue if you get the tongue weight right and keep your load low. It's the pulling that could bite you -- but the 'where' and 'how much' are key to any answer you get here. You may want to consider an aftermarket tranny cooler ... they're not that tough to add and not all that expensive for insurance against a toasted transmission.

There are a few things I'm going to do for durability and one of them is a finned external transmission cooler with a temperature gage even though I have the towing package. The next item is a set of custom progressive springs to kill the back end sag. I could use bags in the OEM springs but I like the permanence of upgraded springs.
