Talking John Wick 2 movie with the Elantra 2017

You gotta love product placement. There's several cars in John Wick 2. Your usual Mercedes Benz and BMW...but what's this...a Hyundai Elantra 2017. Not only is there one car seen in the opening scene, there's 3. Yup!!! There's three clear images that can be seen all within the first few minutes of the movie.

I'll link the movie clip below with the screenshots clearly noted with the scenes.

First Elantra 2017 can be seen approximately at 42 seconds into the movie clip shown at the very bottom. Excuse the motion blur as these are screenshots from YouTube. Note the hexagonal grill gives it away along with the headlights and LED DRL.

Next cutscene which quickly follows next after the first one can be seen at approximately 47 seconds mark into the movie. The rear taillights, wheels, rear reflectors all give it away....it's the Elantra 2017.

Okay, final car cutscene (the third car) can be seen at approximately 1:04 and you have to look quick. Again, the front hexagonal grill, headlights, LED DRL all give it away.

Very cool, right? I'm guessing it's the same car used per each scene since all of the ones seen appear to be the same color. What does this mean? Well, perhaps someone from the film production wanted the new Elantra 2017 and this was a simple form to use it in the movie as a tax write off for their personal benefit after the film was completed. Or maybe someone out there has a better conclusion as to why it's seen so often in the exact color over and over again. Thoughts? Perhaps if the car wasn't so new to the market, it might be coincidence if seen once maybe twice...but three times all within a brief timeframe is a bit more than coincidence. The actual clip can be reviewed below.

I would imagine Hyundai didnt spend a lot on product placement if one needs to be really quick with the pause button to see the grilles

Nah, it's not like that at all. With cinema digital projectors at theaters, 4K and the average tv being over 50" at home, details aren't hard to miss. I watched the movie for the first time on blu-ray and noticed all those things. I really wanted to see the JW movies when they first came out in theaters, but b/c there wasn't a IMAX 3D showing, I've skipped out on good movies over this lack of format being at theaters.

I would have mentioned it earlier if I viewed the movie at a theater. I doubt Hyundai is even aware of their car in the movie. The rest of the New York advertising be it the scenery like the Victoria Secret flagship store I'm sure needed written permission from the Limited Brand in order to show it in the movie. This is also a reason I'm sure so many movies aren't filmed in tourist locations in New York considering the permission needed to show their image/products.

Here's a bonus for ya I'm sure most viewers would actually have to play/rewind and pause.... the opening scene when the guy falls off the motorcycle, you see the motorcycle sliding on the ground along with what appears to be the guys arms waving in the air, a car cuts in front of the scene (this is intentional per the movie illusion this is all really happening in order to edit the scene with what's real into the transition of the motorcyclist) after the car passes by, note the guy pops up and runs after his motorcycle. THIS IS SO FAKE! The physical body mechanics in the scene aren't realistic. The guy would have rolled/slid around in some fashion kinda like his motorcycle...but nope, he pops up standing to give the illusion this is all really happening.

I'm a huge movie buff and I usually see through the BS/ poor editing. It makes it fun catching the flaws someone in editing should have caught before the movie was released. The above cinematic scene is normal in production cinema and isn't flawed per the illusion the movie was going for...but in reality, this wouldn't have happened. My eyes aren't 20/20 anymore, but thanks to the 4K movie format, it kinda feels like it at times with the clarity

And there I was thinking Keanu Reeves was driving around evening the score in an Elantra; maybe in Wick 3

I'd have to agree. At most, Hyundai probably mailed the movie studio some Starbuck's gift cards for using one of their new vehicles in the movie. OTOH, Victoria's Secret likely shelled out major bucks for that premium product placement scene!

That's about as believable as $350-million athlete LeBron James driving a Kia to work every day

Or maybe Keanu Reeves is the one whom benefited from the car being in the movie by actually receiving the car after film production. I doubt it, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I know if I saw Keanu Reeves driving the Elantra AD platform, I would quickly rush over and have him autograph my car manual along with taking pics. Heck, selling the car afterwards wouldn't be a problem considering the above factors; I might make a few extra bucks selling the car.

Oh-man...this is going to sound so evil. I'd call it even with the Limited Brand if they let me spend some time with the Victoria Secret models while they were in their underwear products (wink, wink). >deep grin<
