Just wondering how your mileage is...I'm in Canada and i've been averaging 6.0 to 6.4l per 100kms.....I'm finding the meter is all over the place...no mods on car completely stock....the display had gone as high as 8 sometimes,no driving style change and this is on ECO mode...
What a weird way to state your fuel efficiency I've never seen it measured as amount used per X distance, I've always seen distance per single liter/gallon.
Anyway, that equates to 36.75MPG if my math is right, and that's higher than what I'm getting. I live in the city and have very short drives every day, less than a mile for many of them, and I usually get 27-28 MPG on an average week. On a recent road trip from Minnesota to Missouri, about 9 hours on the road, I was able to average 42 MPG on the freeway.
That sounds like what I am experiencing. I get 42 if I fill-up before driving on Interstate. But, if I fill up before a short trip I am in the low 20's. By time I average short and long trips it is a little over 30 MPG. I am not in the City so I get to use the Interstate a little more. I am thrilled. I am putting less gas in per week than my previous car. Cha-Ching.
@SioWolf: Lots of data get collected in the CPU. Numbers are crunched. Displays record the results. It helped on your road trip because the engine had time to reach its normal operating temp. Not so, when driving in one mile jaunts.
You may get nonchalant over this MPG thing, given time. It used to be a sickness with me. Trying to squeeze every last drop outta the injectors. Now? I don't worry about it. I gas/I go/I have fun. Well, this works for me.
I've been pretty impressed, overall, with the mileage from these cars. And I would not be surprised if Hyundai is conservative in their EPA ratings now, given they were busted a few years back for being too optimistic.
That being said, with only 3k miles on my V.E., I average 32MPG on my commute. Before I hit 1k, it was around 30. So it still has some time to really break in. This is in the SF Bay Area with relatively clear freeway driving to work, and mostly stop-and-go on the way home. About 30 miles round-trip.
I always reset my mileage gauge before a long trip, and on the trip home. That being said, last weekend on a road trip to visit some friends I hit 50.2 MPG and even took a photo of it. That was averaging about 50MPH with the A/C on, on an 94 degree day. A portion was that was in ECO mode, but only because it hit 45MPG and kept going UP so I wanted to game it a bit and see if I could hit 50. I never use ECO, in normal driving.
On a solid freeway run doing about 75MPH with A/C, on relatively level road, this vehicle seems to have no problem cresting 40MPG.
Enjoyed the good read along with the photo. I'm currently wondering how you deal with any traffic in/around San Francisco. Dude, no joke, I could watch all of the Lord of the Rings movies combined and still have a bit of spare time to do something else with the parking lots you guys call freeways up there.
Obviously slightly exaggerated, but I think the message is conveyed. Every other car just about seems like a Tesla. There must be some killer sweet contracts with corporations between Tesla. Yeah, Tesla corporation is up there...still, there's tons on them seen all around unlike 3-5 years ago.
I bet you've got your front license plate on. Your parking enforcement is really strict. I got yelled at before I shouted back the rental I was in is from Arizona. Oh...that sure upset the woman. Sure wish Cali wasn't anal about front plates.
When I fill up and hit the interstate for a 4 hour drive, mine gets 46-48 mph consistently. In town it's usually between 26-28 with all the accessories on. Someone else will have to convert that from mpg to litres per 100kms to make a direct comparison.......
OP, Do you have your meter set to reset when you fill up or when you start your car? Mine was all over too and I switched it to reset when I start the car. Give a better reading now. It changes depending on how I drive, more precise then having to make up a spike in bad driving..I'll explain. Drive in Eco mode for most of a tank..say you get 6l/100kms. Switch to Sport and drive it a little hard. You go to 8-9l/100kms. If it only resets when you fill up. It's going to take longer to go back to 6 then if it resets everytime you turn the key and start the car. Another way is to see what reading you get when you turn off your car. Mark it down and keep your receipts to compare. Something I have yet to do soon.
In the dash settings, you can configure the car to reset the mileage every time you refill the tank. I set it this way after the first tank, and has worked flawlessly since. I'm sure it simply detects when the fuel door is opened, and uses that as the reset switch.
@RykrosGT: After reading your post, I don't believe I will ever complain about any rush hour traffic, water pressure, or service industry again. Folks are still courteous out here, on and off the streets. Granted, we don't have those gorgeous mountains, per se, nor your beautiful sandy beaches. We don't have a lot of snobbery. And most of the less cerebral citizens keep to themselves at their preferred gathering places...like, um, Wal-Mart and the various discount dollar stores.
I think it all boils down to what we human brings are seeking, what we're willing to "give up to get," and our tolerance levels of the area(s) in which we choose to live, work, & play. Best part? We adapt. I went from a 4 mile to a 26 mile commute, each way. First couple of weeks (maybe a month?) nearly killed me. Soon thereafter, it was just a drive to work. No biggie.
I've been really impressed with the Elantra so far in terms of MPG. On the highway, I'm surprised if I'm not averaging around 40 mpg and in town I'm around 34-35 mpg. If I remember, I'll post a picture I have on my phone of the car registering 45.5 mpg after a 160 mile trip I took. What's most impressive to me is that this is all before it's first oil change. Not really sure how much better I can expect it to get, but in theory it should get even better after it is more thoroughly broken in.
Hey neighbor up the road: you maybe getting a little assist from our local breezes on the highway? LOL
I've witnessed both my former MD models get above 50mpg with one of those "light" breezes at my back as I travelled up I-44 to Edmond. There was one 3-mile stretch when it got to 61.1mpg. The only problem was the return trip. Suddenly, those gusts had become my worst fuel economy enemy. Most folks have never seen the breezes we deal with. LOL
If you're running up and down Hwy 51 (?) you're getting a real treat. That's a nice piece of landscape to drive on. Smooth, or at least it used to be when we came up for Bedlam two years ago. Nice little college town, Stillwater.
Hyundai "says" their Motors are already broken in. Then why the 400 mile caveat in the owner's manual?
OkieRich, you can once again go back to having a blast during retirement. I took my first road trip! Your not fired, your retired as my designated mileage tester.
It was Father's Day breakfast at the nursing home. A little over 70 miles one way. Of those most was interstate with 8 miles of two lane road. Lots of hills. On the way down I was getting 43 mpg with A/C on. I stopped to get gas about 2/3 rds of the way home since gas was $1.89. I also turned the A/C off. The readout was 47 mpg before I returned to my city, short trip driving and turned on the A/C.
I am very pleased. My last car would maybe get 33 mpg on the same trip to the nursing home. Unfortunately, I do not have time to do the math thing to check the accuracy of the digital readout. Maybe others can chime in on how accurate it is.
Went and got my oil changed today, and well. got great MPG. 118 mile round trip. So, she got to stretch her legs a bit today.
Got out on the interstate, set the cruse control to 70mph (our max speed here), and let'er roll..
Good for you, @NDSE! My 400 mile RT only gave me a return of 32.? mpg. I guess 80 mph may have had some impact and influence on fuel consumption?
Thanks for the release. Next trip? Maybe thru MS, over to AL, up to TN, then VA. Have a cousin outside Montgomery. Might be fun taking a plant tour of the Hyundai Mfg Palace. Trip penciled-in for the moment. I still have some "creative cedar design" work left to do in the back yard. That's Job 1. Which means more trips to the Depot and Lowe's for materials. EVERY day! Not that cruising thru those two has ever been an issue with me.

Just did roughly 200 miles round trip, a hair under 100 miles this morning and reversed track this afternoon. I averaged 42 mpg in the morning and just got 46.5 coming back. That's with 10W30 oil too. Pretty pleased!
Only about 190 miles on my car so far. Not sure far off the car's mileage computer is (i'm sure you can all correct me on that) but on my way to work i averaged 50.1 mpg and on my home from work i averaged 46.3mpg .... My commute is about 30 min each way and is prob about 1/2 city and 1/2 highway
So just a few things I've noticed over the last two weeks.
I've had to adjust my work schedule, meaning that I've been doing some more driving earlier in the morning (around 4:30 am) on a consistent basis. That early in the morning, the 74 mile trip to my office is pretty void of traffic meaning that I almost never need to adjust my cruise control and never have to run my AC. All this has been done on the same oil change and I'm sitting at just under 5200 miles. None of this is super official, just going off the miles and mpg readout on the dashboard once you turn the car off. The speed limit for the majority of the trip is 75 miles per hour and the road (highway 151) offers a lot of ups and downs and hill climbs.
At 65 miles an hour, I was able to get 44+ mpg for three days in a row. I had a high of 47.4 (had a tailwind) and a low of 44.1 (slight headwind).
At 70 miles an hour, I was consistently above 42 mpg. Never got below it, but I would be in the low 42s with headwinds (usually around 42.2 or so). With tailwinds, I could creep up to the 44 mpg range.
At 75 miles an hour, my mpg took a fairly significant hit. My average was around 38-39 mpg. With tailwinds I could creep up above 40 mpg, but only barely. The extra 5 mph really cut into the mpg.
Overall, I'm very impressed with the gas mileage the car offers.
Edit: For full disclosure, I'm also running a 5W30 after dumping the Factory Fill at 3000 miles.
*partial disclosure* >kidding< I enjoyed th sweet read. So descriptive. You've set the bar for future posts. I expect no less through your future contributions by sharing.
being in a metric system the best i got was 5.7L/100 kms all highway at speed around 100km/hr on my 2.0
thats pretty good 17.25km/ litre
but city is bad i avg 11.5-12L/100
