Dent in New Elantra + Sketchy Dent Repair

I've been really beating myself up over the last week from putting a nice crease in the rear quarter panel of my new 2017 Elantra. Purchased it only 2 months ago, first new car too, and I only have myself to blame for this.

I contacted a paintless dent repair garage local to me and they said this was a bit beyond their capabilities, but that they would forward this to an auto-body shop nearby. I've been working through this paintless dent repair company the entire time while THEY deal with the auto-body shop, and I'm really starting to wish I hadn't gotten myself into this.

They quoted me at $600 originally, but wanted to increase the price once they saw it in person. The guy who was originally going to do it told me he was able to keep their price down but they aren't happy about it and that was the first time I started to worry.

I went in on Wednesday last week to get my car back and the repair was very messy - dimples and dust in the paint job and even some clear coat dripping down the car! I haven't seen my car since, but the guy has been keeping me updated, apparently they are re-doing it for the third time over the weekend and he is personally watching them to make sure they do it right.

At this point I just want my car back, and I have this irrational (I hope its irrational) fear that they are going to put a tear in a seat or something as revenge for making them go through all this.

Busting up laughing @ "I contacted a paintless dent repair garage local to me and they said this was a bit beyond their capabilities."

^^ Whoa...only a truly gifted body tech with godly skills will be able to get that imperfection out.

Good to see someone new to the forum...but...I want to here the story as to how this happened. Gauging a rough idea from the pictures, it appears you scrapped something sharp/ with a angled blunt edge and I'm wondering why you didn't stop the car once you first heard the sound. Well, this is assuming you heard something digging into the body.

Don't worry about it too much! What's done is done. High five for having it repaired so soon! If your parents are helping you even the slightest bit financially, you might have blown a little of their trust. Kidding! Hopefully all will be well in the end. Geez, a little lower and you could have replaced the bumper instead of the C pillar dent removal.

Whoa, you're not giving me enough credit here! This car is all mine, nobody else is involved in any of the payments or paperwork.

I was pulling into a parking spot next to my friend's Ford Bronco. His rear bumper has a plastic edge to it that sticks out further than the rest of the bumper. This is what rubbed against the car.

Mystery solved. Haha dude, you just had to sign in tonight. Phone batt is dying. Have to be quick. Your logic/ humor is always appreciated elsewhere in prior threads.

Chill, chill...I did say "if"...right? Whoa....Ford is really built 'tough'! Lol as it use to be their slogan...eh, built Ford tough or something along those lines. Forgot where I read Ford was bringing back the Bronco. That should be interesting.

@SioWolf: It'll all work out. Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans. That area is basically some plasticized (?) type of material. I can't remember the actual composite. Anyway, don't beat yourself up. But I get it. Did the same thing backing up my 2011...about 4 days old...put a little ding in the bumper. Oh, well. Found an OU emblem, stuck it on, looked great. Could hardly tell.

Finally got it back. Pictures above.

They fixed another dent, that wasn't by me, for free and also discounted the repair because of the troubles.

There is still one small blemish and they said I can return in a week to get it buffed out.

Whoa....this is proof photoshop is limitless. OP...I'm kidding! Some advice --> feel behind the fender and visually look behind it. Try using your phone with the screen side camera or maybe a mirror. The shop is counting on you never looking back there.

Dude, as long as the provided work makes ya' happy, that's cool. Looks good from the picture. If you tap along where the work was performed (left rear fender)...the tapping sound might change in comparison to the same panel on the the rear fender (rightside). Hope that makes sense. There's reasons for this.

I was planning to inspect it further but I've already scratched the paint with my nail from messing with it too early. I don't want to do anything more until it completely cures.

There isn't much to feel behind the fender, behind the metal is a thick black plastic(?).

Wow man; first you scratched your car not being aware how 'huge' car is; then you poke your fingers into... and scratched it again. STOP touching that CAR! Go get some cardboard boxes and use the whole gas tank to practice front, back and parallel parking. It will save you a bundle.

But, not to worry. Every young driver makes mistakes. Even though who think they know how to drive make even worse mistakes. If you want your car in perfect shape, park it in your living room and change oil and fluids as per maintenance schedule. Car might last forever.

Stuff happens; after a while you will stop noticing scratches, bumps and similar mishaps. Enjoy your car.

Yes, the learning curve is steep here... Such a young guy with so little life experience yet, though. He must be the youngest new Elantra owner ever!

Oh and my sister saw the note yesterday and put it aside. She ripped it off from the then more permanent spot in front of van today... It turns out it happened exactly the way I described it, from turning sharply before being fully backed out of garage.

Moving past whatever happened while the damage occurred, I'm impressed a teenager (you) owns a 2017. Even more impressive, you took care of the damage so quickly. I've read all sorts of things posted throughout the forum and I'm in awe how quickly you pull the trigger on the responsibilities in your life.

Your recent additions to the forum are refreshing. I'll continue to keep watch for your future contributions. Dunno why it took you so long to decide to join the forum after purchasing your car. Eh, anyways....
