can the dealer read the problem codes even if the light is off? Our 2010 Santa Fe engine light comes on then goes off after a few days. The dealer said it would have to be on for them to read it. Said if it went off the computer probably reset itself. Well something has to keep triggering it to come on

If the code is still in the computer's memory the engine light doesn't have to be on to get a reading. When the engine light comes on again, go to your local auto parts store. They should be able to read the code for free and tell you what it is.
