When I got this car in October my trip meter said 30.9mpg and stayed like that for about a month and it has dropped to 29.5mpg and is staying there. I have not changed my driving style at all. I slowly accelerate and decelerate, use cruise control almost always and drive on roads that are 40-55 mph. Could it be my trip meter or am I just a crappy driver?

Several possible explanations. You don't say where you live but a change in temp with the season will affect mileage. I just had my low tire pressure light come on with a cold snap and sure enough all 4 tires were down about 4 lbs. Also, regions switch to reformulated winter gas which generally produces lower mileage.

Again, I am suggesting a combo of factors. However, 4 lbs. of air pressure was enough to cause my low pressure light to come on. Also, you are only talking a 4% reduction in mileage. This isn't a particularly large deviation.

DOE estimates 0.4% MPG loss per 1 PSI on all four tires, and 3-4% for 10% ethanol winter fuel. Winter tires take their toll on MPG, too. On my old car, winter tires + winter fuel drops MPG by 10% on freeway, less around town.

Unless you have a lot of steady freeway cruising at moderate speeds (less than 70 mph or so), you'll have great difficulty getting mileage above 30, even if you're very gentle with the throttle.
29.5 is better than a lot (most) of us are doing. It's certainly better than I'm doing. Keep in mind that the EPA ratings for this car are now 27/37, so 30 is not out of line at all. - Mark |
