Default Question about the Power Jacks

Hi guys,

I'm considering an Elantra GT as we speak, but I had a quick question. I currently own an '05 Elantra Hatchback and it has 2 power plugs up front much like the new GT. However, one of my BIGGEST COMPLAINTS about the '05 is that when the ignition is off, both plugs are also disabled, so you can't charge your phone unless the car is on.

Is this also the case with the new GT? Is the one in the cargo compartment always hot?

Thanks for any information! I love the way the new GT works and I'm excited about buying one, but I'd like to know about the little things first.

All three acc outlets are switched with the ignition key.

Haven't checked, but I'd be flabbergasted if it was powered with with ignition off. This would require a separate USB power supply circuitry apart from the radio system (which is obviously switched).

Pretty uncommon these days to see an "always hot" socket on a new car. You may be forced into rigging an extra socket with a separate run to the fuse box.

The Elantra Touring's rear outlet was always on. I have not checked but assumed this was the case with the GT.

I checked the manual and there is no mention so there is a decent chance my assumption was wrong. I'll have to check the next time I have the car.

I checked and mine is switched. The manual doesn't say one way or the other.

A quick mod would be to cut the rear power outlet wire at the junction box and splice it to the memory output which is a fused 15 amps (you would get a bit less power but still).

I just checked mine. No power to the cargo outlet without the ignition on.

You've got your answer and some simple solutions. I wouldn't let this stop you from buying a new GT, it's a great little car!

If you need to charge your phone with the car off, then it's time for a new phone. Why don't you get an iPhone and kill two birds with one stone? Charge and listen to your music library at the same time. Voila!
