An interesting article for you long tube CAI boys. Apparently the ol' Nu motor doesn't make power with one.

The 1.8L nu engine uses a variable length intake runner design (you can find demonstration videos of this on youtube). In a nutshell, it has long intake runners (which is what you can see on the outside of the manifold) and short runners (which you can't see underneath between the throttle body and cylinder head.)

Honda had a very similar setup on their B18C1 engine used in the Integra GSR. Many other manufacturers have used this and still do.

It's not new technology, but it's very effective at significantly widening the power band of an NA engine, especially smaller displacement 4 cylinders like our 1.8L.

The reason there's no gain with a long tube CAI is because you're essentially running the same length intake as the stock tract but with a slightly different configuration. The stock setup is already a well designed CAI system, it's just much quieter.

And the slight gain from a short-ram is only at peak output rpm and WOT. 98% of the time while driving normally at less than 25% throttle and under 4000rpm, it essentially has no benefit.

Not trying to burst anyone's bubble. If it's what you want to do, by all means, enjoy.

Just trying to inform is all...

Very interesting info. Injen claims a HP increase but I guess their testing must be wrong. I am not sure either way, but I can tell you that I am happy with the improved throttle response and much better sound over stock. And it looks better under the hood. Still a worthwhile mod for me. Cheers!

Sure, there might be an increase, but it'll be very insignificant and only at peak output rpm.

For all you intake experts, do you think it is worthwhile to replace the stock factory air filter with something like a K&N? I don't want to go the route of adding a new intake system, just the filter if it's worth it.

Yes. The main reason being; you will never have to buy another filter again for the life of the car (or as long as you will own it).
