What brand synthetic are you guys using? I'm not familiar with the Shell Helix brand it says to use in the manual.
I want to start the car off right doing my own oil changes with Mobil 1, but not if its going to destroy the car.

Why would Mobil 1 destroy the car?? That's the only synthetic oil I run in my vehicles!!

I found it kind of annoying since that was their only reason when I asked why they were so against synthetic. I'm gonna keep changing it every 6,000 with good old Dino oil anyways but they gave us the 8yr/160,000km warranty with the purchase so if anything happens, I'll still be good by them at least....
Yeah it sounds kind of stupid but I'll adhere to their interval for warranty purposes for now. I'm still going to throw in synthetic even if it's every 6K, mainly because it's cold here now and I park my car outside 24/7 so it'll be easier on the engine when I do those cold starts.

1.8l Nu Engine Oil Filter Cup Wrench Size

I usually just take the filter into the auto parts store and try various ones until I find one that fits.

Good luck with a cap wrench when you're having trouble with a strap. I've had the opposite experience - cap wrenches failed and I had to use a strap wrench. The closer to the base of the filter you can get to apply torque, the less it will tend to distort and twist.

What is the svc. interval on that car in Canada? The SI on my Accent in US is 7500 miles or over 11K+ Kilos. This is actually a very reasonable SI for a modern conventional oil like Castrol GTX or Quaker State. 3K miles is too often even with an offbrand oil. THis is why I wouldn't use Synthetic. I would do it if I could leave it in for a year w/o violating the warranty.

The book calls for maint every 12,000km but if you fall under the severe service criteria, then its a bit of maint and oil/filter in between the big services.

Hi Mark - I think you are talking about the wrench with black nylon strap. I'll try that. The strap wrench I tryed was the one with the metal strap. Not enough room to get a good pull. Thanks

The cap wrench is so much easier on this engine, just find a metal one. I got mine at Advance auto for about $5

Actually, I have three strap wrenches of different sizes and they're all the metal strap type. Haven't tried a nylon strap model.

They all have worked well on various cars/filters, including a time or two where cap wrenches failed. But, as you mention, you do have to have room enough to the side of the filter. I haven't done my car yet, so I have no visualization of how the filter sits on our vehicle.

One trick with metal strap wrenches is to wedge a big screwdriver between the strap and the filter. This tightens up the wrench where you need a much shorter swing to get torque and bites into the filter a little.

A cheap cap wrench at the car parts store sounds like it would be worth a try. Take the new filter you plan on putting on to the store to get a good fit. I have had a couple of BMWs where no auto parts store cap wrench would fit very well - they acted like they did, but would slip under duress. But when I bought the official metal cap wrench from BMW (for $25 rather than $5) it fit perfectly and worked like a charm. So I'm sure Hyundai has the "real deal" if you're willing to spend a little more.

I don't know what size cap wrench to buy as I can't get the original off...yet. I will try the screw driver in the metal strap wrench trick. Sounds good. There is just enough room that it might work with the screw driver taking up the slack. Thank you. PS: after I get the original off it will be cap wrench forever.
