Lol it's a very busy time for the wife and I in terms of new vehicles! The salesman at the Hyundai dealer just about pooped himself after we closed the deal on the Accent and I told him, "oh, by the way, I may be in the market for an Elantra GT also..."

It's so funny. Around here, Volvos are EXTREMELY popular. In fact, my sister just got a used one. To the contrary, I've seen very few Elantra GTs yet, although I've seen other Hyundai models aplenty.

Portland loves their non-American cars.

I know how that is. My husband and I both bought our Nissans from the same salesman in one night.

The key is to do your research and know what your Volvo is valued at, so you don't get taken at the dealer. Get a quote from CarMax to start with, then start shopping. If you arent getting what you want for it, keep shopping. There's no pressure on you to make a quick deal.

Man! What a dilemma. I don't know the details, but I wish I were in your shoes. I'm in the opposite situation.
I've got a 12 y/o car which I've got to clean up in order to sell for top dollar in order to be able to afford payments on a newer car.

Yeah definitely going to go with Carmax to at least get a quote. Will also get a quote from the Hyundai dealer and then crunch numbers to see if the sales tax savings outweighs whatever additional money Carmax or a private buyer would give.

Of course... There's always the Veloster Turbo to think about... Hehe, just not practical and a little too flashy for us. Or is it...?

You said you had a ton of school loan debt. When I had debt I did not go out and buy a new car. I drove beaters for years and years. I have only bought one new car in my life and I am well established. Sell the Volvo and go buy something to get you by for a number of years.
Not meaning to meddle in your business but it makes me scratch my head and go 'hmmmm'.

I also have student loan debt, but the reason I drive newer cars now is because the older cars I was driving were dangerous. I had an engine fire, and later on was stuck blocking traffic in my Stanza; then with my Accord I was breathing burnt oil smoke in the cabin.

I think it's pretty obvious that, before I was married, I'd have never bought a new car, but when I got married my husband pushed me in that direction. He hates used cars, which goes exactly opposite to how I was raised. My family almost NEVER buys new cars! The only time they bought a new car was in 1983.

But, since the OP already drives a new Hyundai, if I were in his shoes, I would just sell the Volvo and use the money to pay off the loans. In the end, it's his choice, though!

Yeah the second Hyundai (the Elantra GT) would be for the wife, the Accent is mine. It is tempting to just get a "beater," but at the same time we want something that we can keep for 10 years, not be dangerous, and not require tons of repairs. Getting a new car under warranty is appealing for those reasons.

My sister just bought a 2013 Accent base model, hatchback, automatic for 15k +TTL. The week before I purchased my GT from the same dealer. Not sure what you paid but I would hope it was similar. Hatches are more expensive also.

Two other possible choices for getting rid of the car. Talk to a Volvo dealer to see if they might buy it outright or sell it on consignment. Also, many cities have "high end" import dealers that typically sell used imports that are "no excuses" cars. If you have such a dealer, they might be willing to buy it from you.
