As much as I like the GT, I am having a hard time getting past it's fuel economy. It's rather depressing when your brand new compact hatch is guzzling gas at the same rate as an AWD CUV like the Mazda CX-5. If only Hyundai had brought over their diesel engines then this wouldn't be an issue but right now I am suffering from a bad case of buyer's remorse. Also, I'm wondering why the GT is such bad fuel economy compared to the Elantra sedan when they use the same engine and the GT is only ~100 pounds heavier? I'm guessing it's got to be the aerodynamics? The horn beep should go off with two press of the lock button on your remote, I find it quite loud and noticeable. |

I fill the car up.... the Distance To Empty resets to 542 kms... and I might get 450 before the gas light comes on with 75 kms to empty. A fill-up will be 40 litres +. The average mileage will be about 8.6 ltr/ 100 km. I use a light foot, ECO button, and take advantage of lots of coasting. Sometimes the average is over 10 after my wife drives. It drives her crazy she can't do better. A friend with the 2013 Elantra sedan gets over 600 kms to a tank full (6.3 ltr/100 average) with lots of rural commute to work, about the inverse of my driving as being 80% city. I figure the mileage will improve some as I break the engine in (only 2200 kms so far) but has a long way to improve to get it where I think it should be (about 550 kms to the fill-me gas light). I have not seen where I can choose MPG as an option in the menus. MPG readout does not interest me... I don't relate to it as well as # Ltrs/ 100 km... plus the Imperial vs US gal confusion when discussing on forums. Leave MPG to the USA models.... lol |

My horn does not beep when the door lock button is pressed twice. I am going to speak to the dealership about this. All I get is a feeble chime and flashing lights. There is no menu setting to change this as the manual suggests (if equipped). |

Check Fuelly.com, there are only 14 GT's registered on there and my average 7.7L/100km is already on the better end of the reported spectrum so far. Again, this is depressing. Some are saying it's too early to tell and I need to break in the engine more but if you do some sleuthing on Fuelly you will see a lot of Mazda3-SKY owners for example achieving 6.8-7.0L/100km right off the dealer lot. This stings even more because the M3-SKY was the other car I was considering to buy, I chose the GT in the end for the panaromic roof and ruled their fuel economies as a non-factor since they have identical EPA ratings but now I'm wishing I had been more diligent on my research. |

I'm in the same boat. Even with Hyundai's offer to pay customers back, I doubt that compensation will make up for the crappy gas mileage. That was factor #1 in my purchasing decision. If I had known the mileage would be this bad, I would have opted for something else.

I took possession of my GT on Nov 5, 2 days after the fuel rebate deadline, and I've been far from happy with the milege so far. Took car down to Niagara falls USA this weekend and was average 6.5 on the way home which wasn't too bad but I'm finding city driving just awful compared to my wife's 2011 sedan.
I also noticed a slit in the carpet on the passager side on the riser where the seat is mounted. The weekend was the first time that we had the seat retracted all the way back so we didn't see it before. Hopefully I won't get any grief from the dealer. Chris |

I also don't like the fuel economy. Like Winkle, I too:
1. am disappointed in the GT's fuel economy 2. chose the GT over the M3-SKY & Focus with the assumption fuel economy was reasonably close between the three 3. don't yet understand why the sedan mileage is reportedly better than this hatch I'm not relying on the computer's over-optimistic view of economy - I'm calculating and recording it by hand. I'm getting anywhere from a best of 7.8 l/100 up to 9.2. Eco-mode enabled. But I still like the car for many reasons. A few thoughts on fuel economy since this is a 'what don't you like' thread: My old Civic was much worse during the fall/winter months than it was in the spring/summer, running low 9's in the winter to low 7's in the summer. So this car is more or less on par with that one considering I've only driven it in the fall. Certainly there's a normal seasonal variance in economy due to the colder temperatures and the winter-formulated gas which we are running here. Still, I expected this car to be better than it is. I'm also aware that I'm using this car more than I did the Civic since it's nicer and safer and much more likely to arrive with all its bits intact. For me, more = more city = lower overall economy but I again would've expected better. Perhaps the car would get better economy if driven really really lightly. I do drive faster than the average person and recognize this is a smaller engine. I recall a Top Gear fuel economy shoot out between a Prius and a BMW M3 where the hard-driven Prius burned more fuel than the M3 over identical laps of some track simply because it was being pushed harder than designed. I'll continue to monitor. |

The question is though, how many of you are running the 6 speed automatic? Even with the ECO mode for the autotragic, you won't get the same mileage out of a manual transmission car. There have been many a car that I've driven for a period of time, and the manual version gets better mileage 9 times out of 10, whether the OEM has the auto is better or not. Don't forget that ECO button changes all the shift patterns and the throttle response of the car. All this might be deemed in the name of "economy", but it will not necessarily be better, as the car isn't operating in it's natural states.

As far as mileage, I have noticed mine improve since I bought the car and right now have just under 4k miles on the odometer. I expect as I learn how to drive this car more efficiently and the car breaks in more that my mileage will improve slightly still. My last tank of gas which I filled up just last night yielded me the following results (keep in mind I have a manual): Total miles on tank: 349.6 MPG per computer: 33.8 Total gas to fill up: 10.900 gallons Total calculated MPG: 32.1 MPG Average speed: 44 MPH Total travel time: 7 hours In that tank was one highway trip of 180 miles (90 miles each way on highway). The remaining 170 miles were all around town driving, picking up and/or dropping off kids, or my normal commute to work which is only 10 miles and a mix of highway, city and some traffic. Realistically with such a short commute and other factors like going through car pool lines at school, I don't expect to see much better than city mileage on my normal drive. If I take my mix of driving (assuming 170 was considered all city) by the new EPA estimates (37/26) I should have had seen 31.65 MPG. On this highway trip I spent a fair amount of time cruising at 70, so had I slowed down to 65 I would've gotten even better results. My average was slightly over this at 32 MPG. I also have a little extra weight (and thump) in my trunk too. I'm happy with what I'm seeing ![]() Also, keep in mind I was running gas with 10% ethanol (EPA tests use pure gas) and winter mix blend at that. That same tank in the summer should yield a good 10% better results without the winter-mix gas.

[QUOTE=dibs39;1182793]I took possession of my GT on Nov 5, 2 days after the fuel rebate deadline, and I've been far from happy with the milege so far. I also noticed a slit in the carpet on the passager side on the riser where the seat is mounted. The weekend was the first time that we had the seat retracted all the way back so we didn't see it before. Hopefully I won't get any grief from the dealer. I have the same issue with the carpet coming up by the slit under the front passenger seat. I will add it to the list when I bring the car in for its 6 month maintainence next month- also have a rattle in the back and would like to try getting the not-very bright- headlights reaimed. To those of you who have recently purchased- does your non-Nav bluetooth work for calling out when the radio is turned off? Calls will come in but I can't call out even by pressing the off hook button on the steering wheel unless my radio is on. Seems odd that calls would come in anyway. The manual also implies that the rear lights over the doors on sunroof models should go on with the doorsopen- they do not. Do anybody's? Regarding the gas mileage, I have been trying to drive mostly unaggressively at all (beat out by a Prius yesterday) looking at the Instant Mileage guage but when I check my MPG it totally sucks. Granted I live in an urban area with hills but am barely hitting 25 with 25% highway and 75% city. I had also bought after narrowing down to Mazda 3 Skyactiv hatch and the GT and their mpg was the same but liked the look of and warranty better with Hyundai. Of course, now Hyundai dropped the mileage 2 mpg and if you compare just the Skyactiv models on Fuelly with the GT they are getting a good 5 mpg better. As my husband said yesterday when asked how he liked the car, "Love the car, hate the gas mileage- but we are stuck for now". I am working to let the buyer's remorse go and enjoy what I like about the car. |
