Default First Broken Panoramic Sunroof Glass

On the 23rd of January, car was at the dealership (9 am) for its first oil change, that rattle in the dashboard and being washed. There was also another issue to be taken care of but they didn't carry a replacement headlight. My brow light on the passenger side wasn't turning on so dealer said they had to swap the whole headlight assembly! Anyhow picked up the SFS later on that day (6 pm) and, I had to wait for the windows to clear as they were really foggy due to the fact that the vehicle had been washed and it was pretty cold outside that day (-25 F). Went to the restaurant with my wife and came back home around 8:30 pm. Car stayed parked all day on the 24th of January in the driveway. Come January the 25th, I wanted to take the SFS instead to go to work when I noticed that giant hole in the roof! Luckily the shade wasn't open so no glass inside the cabin although had the shade been open, maybe pressure wouldn't have built up. Vehicle was towed to dealership but Service Dept. was closed. Today, I shall hear from them. The loaner in the meantime, an Elantra.

So, do you know what happened? You mentioned pressure? Looks like someone nailed it with a hammer or something?

I hate sunroofs, adds cost and complexity for something that serves no true purpose.
Regardless of my feelings, looks like it was hit by some jealous A-hole.

I don't think so. To me, it looks like the window heaved up.

I don't think it was vandalism or at least I want to believe I have nice neighbors. The glass goes upward which led me to believe that with the shade closed, the air trapped between the shade and the glass must've built enough pressure to crack the window. I'll see what the service department say. I've heard of Veloster owners having similar situations...I'll let you guys know for sure.

Wow, that really sucks. I hope they are able to get that swapped out for you quickly. Geez, hope this is not a design issue.

What bothers me about this is that it shattered the way it did. I would have thought that the something like a sunroof would be laminated (like windshields) so as to prevent the small bits of glass from falling on occupants' heads, especially one as large as the panny roof on the SF.

Hopefully it was just a bad glass, although I'm sure they are designed under strict regulations, rather than a design issue. I too was under the impression that the glass was laminated. I'm just glad non of these bits of glass made it into the cabin.

Yeah, no kidding...that would have been a mess. Good thing it wasn't raining too!!

You know, makes me wonder that even though the glass is already tinted, it might be worthwhile getting the lightest shade of a good quality after market tint applied to the panny roof. The tint would act, somewhat, like laminated glass. Of course, it would not be nearly as solid as windshield, but it would certainly minimize the amount of loose glass bits.
