I wonder if Hyundai did any testing as far as the pano-roof's ability to withstand hail?Sucks that you have to go through this, Silver. Best of luck. |

I have some security film that is clear at home. I used that on the glass door of my entertainment rack. My son has hit it several times, never had issues. But I would not use that on the Panoramic roof because although it's clear, it's not perfect and you'd be able to tell there's a film in there. Maybe if you can get a higher quality, optically clear plastic it would work. But to install they have to put heat to it and who knows if that glass will take the heat very well.

Ha! Made me chuckle. Reminded me of my wife and I when our son was young and we were super safety minded in any of our decisions that could impact him. We certainly still consider safety top priority, but we are not as "over the top" as we once were.
On the issue of tint, any tint used should be specifically for exterior windows and vehicles...it should be UV resistant. ie. will not fade. Stuff I had on my Highlander was Quantum tint and considered up there in terms of quality. Last thing you want is putting a clear film and it turning yellow from UV after a year or two. Also, most if not all automotive/exterior tint only requires heat to stretch the tint so it conforms to the contours of curved glass. Heat is not required to adhere the tint...it has its own glue that is activated with water on glass before it is applied. Once the tint is in place, the majority of the water is squeegied out, and the rest dries within a week. |

That's screwed up, I'll tint that sunroof when I get my SF, that way if it breaks, it's won't shatter all over the place.
Such a thing happened to one of my cars, back window, some jerk hit it with a rock or something, but it stayed in one piece, drove to the glass shop and all the pieces stayed glued to the tint, no mess, it was great.

Absolutely love the 2013 Santa Fe (with Tech), best value CUV out there and best looking inside and out. Waiting to see what changes will be made in the 2014 model before taking the plunge. (driving the wife's 2012 Kia Forte for now) |

I am thinking that maybe due to the extreme temperature that day....you said it was -25F..maybe when they washed with warm or hot water the extreme temp differential created a stress crack in the glass that led to the failure later that night? I am surprised that the dealer would be washing vehicles in that extreme cold weather? Just my two cents...might not be the root cause .. I would not dump warm water on a piece of glass that was extremely cold without expecting something bad to happen???

I picked up the vehicle last Friday. All is well now and best part is that the dealership replaced the glass free of charge. They said Hyundai Canada authorized them to order the part. All is well and wife is happy to have her car back, which means I'm happy! :-)

Exact same thing happened to my son's new 2013 Santa Fe yesterday. A tractor trailer unit passed from the opposite direction on the two lane and the sunroof exploded. No rocks or anything like that, figure it was a change in air pressure as it looks like it got sucked out.
Now to see what the dealer says. The vehicle isn't even two weeks old. |

Well, that does it. Presuming I end up with a SF LWB, I will definitely be tinting the pano roof!! I don't want glass falling all over my family if that was to happen. |
