I do have a white plastic frame around the license plate. I wonder if that could be the culprit. I'll remove it and see if that helps.

Hmm interesting. Suggest trying the camera with a piece of black tape (hockey type cloth tape would work well) affixed to the top of the frame and comparing what the view looks like without the tape on the frame.

Not having any of the black cloth electrician tape ( a good idea, Luck11 ), I simply removed the license plate and frame: No change. Covered up the license plate light immediately adjacent to the lens: No change.
Just to cover things, I used the manual display settings on both day and night, and again ( as expected in this case ) there was no improvement. I've no idea of what processing, if any that the camera signal gets prior to being put up on the display, but it is probable that a day/ night gain change is made, and that might be the source of trouble. Hyundai has not yet acknowledged my note on this subject. |

Email response from Hyundai received yesterday:
Dear John Dixson: Thank you for contacting Hyundai Motor America. We are sorry to learn of your concern regarding the quality of imagery regarding your 2013 Santa Fe Sport rearview camera at night. As it is not possible to inspect your vehicle via an email we recommend you contact your local authorized Hyundai dealership to have your vehicle inspected and diagnosed. Hyundai Motor America's limited warranty covers the original equipment radio and audio systems (i.e., radio, CD player, DVD player, navigation system, and Bluetooth) for defects in material or workmanship for the first 3 years from the date of first use or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first. We would also like to direct you to Section 4, page 108 of your Santa Fe Owner's Manual: Warning - "This system is a supplemental function only. It is the responsibility of the driver to always check the inside/outside rearview mirror and the area behind the vehicle before and while backing up". Your rearview camera is to be used in conjunction with the "old-fashioned" way and is not recommended to be used independently for backing up. We have documented your concern as case number 5211766. Please reference if we can be of any further assistance. Thank you for being a valued member of the Hyundai family and for contacting Hyundai Motor America. This is the fourth or fifth response from Hyundai of a similar nature, i.e., they pass tech issues to the dealer, who, especially with a new vehicle, will be hard pressed to provide a reasonable solution. |

I found that in my car, when I replaced the license plate bulbs with a much brighter slightly blue tinted bulb (which still looks white when it is on) and replaced the back up light bulbs with the same slightly blue tinted ones....it made a big difference! no glare and I can see things so much more clearer and everything is much brighter
I went to auto zone and they had what I needed... |
