Your never going to have the best fuel economy period. Stop your complaining! Enjoy the car that is why you bought it. If you bought it for fuel economy then you made a bad decision and you should have bought the chevy volt! I think Dave Graham says it best..." I actually didnt't buy the SF based on the MPG or economy" There are more things about the SF that are great over the competition. Hyundai didnt build this car for you. they built it for everyone.
Wow! I think you make a lot of general assumptions that are totally blown out of proportion.

1. I don't think there is anyone on this forum that ever intended to get the "best fuel economy". I would not have even looked at the Santa Fe for the "best" fuel economy.

2. I did purchase the Santa Fe based on fuel economy. The thought process was like this. I am going to replace a 35 mpg vehicle (actual real world calculation over 278,000 miles). I drive 97% highway. Hmmm, there is a vehicle that states it gets 31 mpg highway. Ok, I can go a little bigger in size to accomodate the growing family a bit and only take about a 4 mpg reduction. That's great, lets purchase. One week later and the Hyundai mpg confession hits the news. Yes, it was the wrong decision for me based on the new mpg ratings and now real world mpg.

3. I would have considered the Chevy volt if I thought it was an affordable, cost efficient vehicle.

I was really gung-ho about buying the SF because based on the original MPG rating because it was going to save me somewhere around $1000 a year vs my Enclave. Now, had I bought the SF and THEN they revised the MPG numbers I would have been torqued. Now that the MPG estimate has been revised I know what I will be getting into. I know Hyundai has "made it right" through their reimbursement program but I can understand how certain people would still feel "duped" by the initial MPG claim.

Secondly, it is amazing how low of mpg some people get. I place those numbers directly on their driving style. Also their location has to be a huge factor. Stop lights and even medium traffic coupled with stop and go traffic kills MPG. I can routinely get at or above stated MPG on my vehicles because of a fairly conservative driving style and our locale (few stoplights and little traffic).

Third, I still think the SF is the best mid sized CUV out there, even with the adjusted numbers. I am going to go back and test drive a N.A. 2.4L to see if it has enough power for us. Not sure if it will be adequate to tow our pop up camper or not though.
Hyundai has not "made it right" for everyone. Only persons that drive 50% hwy and 50% city or less because of the combined mpg reimbursement. I drive almost exclusively highway, therefore I will not be fully compensated for the reduced mpg rating. I understand that it would be hard for Hyundai to encompass all possible driving habits but the consumers did not make the problem so don't punish the consumer.

I to am a very conservative driver so much so that I would go as far as calling myself a hypermiler (sp). I to can normally get stated or above stated mpg on my vehicles and have been for over 20 years. So far I am having difficulty getting even the newly revised highway mpg ratings.

Do I think the Santa Fe is a well built, comfortable, stylish CUV? You bet I do. I like the vehicle very much. I do have the issues that many others are having with the fuel gauge and mpg display readings. But the bottom line for me is the mpg rating because I drive about 30k miles per year and the real world mpg is not living up to its expectations especially with the revised ratings.

If fuel economy was your biggest issue with the Santa Fe then why didnt you purchase the 2.4 engine which yields better fuel economy numbers? I am not disputing your purchasing reasons, I am merely mentioning that complaining about the fuel economy is getting old. Look around every manufactures posts fuel efficnency numbers but not everyone will ever hit those numbers. I understand that the computer on the SF may have higher numbers than actual but have you looked into other companies and there numbers being spot on? My point is you bought the car for more than the fuel efficency. If it was just fuel effiencey that you bought the car for then you should have done more research and looked for something with better numbers.

I did purchase with 90% weight based on fuel economy. I did do the research and based on the original mpg ratings that were stated on the window sticker, I made a decision to purchase. There was a minimum mpg that I was not willing to go under. The original mpg ratings met that qualification. If the mpg ratings had been the newly revised ratings then i would not have purchased the Santa Fe.

Its not a question of doing due diligence on the research or making a bad decision. The research and decision to purchase was a good one based on the information at the time. Its a question of Hyundai changing the rules after the game has been played therefore altering the end results.

Hence, we have strayed off the original topic of this thread so I will expound no more on this issue.

My car has been at the dealer since 4:30 yesterday fo the same problem, as of now the dealer hasnt called me to mention anything about a fix/timeframe etc.

They provided me with a 2013 Sonata loaner, I have been averaging 29.5 mpg (according to the dash) in it, which is what I thought my Santa Fe 'would have' gotten.

According to my service manager who was on the phone with Hyundai today, there are several service centers around the country that have been trying various "fixes" for this problem, from replacing parts to reprogramming/resetting ECU values and so far nothing has worked across the board. That information has gone back to Hyundai corporate which is still evaluating the problem and potential solutions.

What that sounds like to me is that Hyundai was hoping that the fix for this problem might be "cheap" a quick reprogram here, a quick reset there, an occassional fuel meter replacement, etc. but that nothing has worked 100% of the time, so they realize it is a bigger problem that will cost more $$$ for Hyundai to fix and they haven't come up with a solution yet.

While it's "nice" that Hyundai is looking into it, the results of this going on for 2+ months now without a solution being arrived at is disappointing in my book.

Yes I have FWD only, it should say that next to my name as I filled that in a long time ago.

Hitting the road today for Thanksgiving (about 400 miles) and filling up with 89 octane. Will determine trip mpg on my return.
