Economy readout

Observations on our CRDi premium wagon (Aussie spec 100kw version).

Readout is on average 0.4l/100km optimistic (eg 5.5l/100km on dash readout works out to be 5.9l/100km) BUT our odometer reads low so adjusted this brings it to only 0.2l/100km higher then the readout (ours reads 3% fewer km than actually travelled).

Recent trip came to 5.5 on readout, which means 5.7l/100km

Claimed economy can be achieved - just

I have no idea if this inaccuracy would be consistent from car to car.

Have not confirmed economy displayed with actual tank fills divided by kms travelled. GPS on our car does show also a lower speed than speedo suggests, but this is with newish tires (largest diameter). As tires wear deviation will get smaller. How did you measure the "accurate distance traveled"? Your corrected value is down to just some 3-4% error, an up to 0.5l inaccuracy in tank fill measurement of a 50l partial fill would introduce alone a 1% plus/minus error, however approaching zero over many refills. One would hope fuel bowsers are actually accurate too. Over how many tank fills did you measure this?

Over 5 tanks averaged.

I used odometer check markers on highway at 4 locations (5x 1km). All results the same, car reads 4.7km at 5km. These are supposed to be spot on. Also confirmed with sat nav.Always refuel to first click on same bowser.

Currently half way through 1250km trip with air con on. Readout currently 5.2, which is roughly 5.4. Very hilly drive so far.

Surprised how often the front suspension bottoms out. These cars are better on main highways but overall very comfy. Might use the 380 for "bad" roads. Aussie engineers still best at designing suspension to deal with the terrible condition of many of our roads. I wonder if higher profile tyres would help?

Only one other gripe, engine braking not great but I guess that is a reflection of the tiny engine. It is hard to believe it is only 1.7l.

Speedo difference on my car compared to GPS is 2%.

Have not done the economy check you have done but would assume similar results. regularly reads 5.5 ltrs per hundred on the highway/freeway.

As an aside my Mitsubishi 380 recently passed 100000 klms. With a speedo error of +4% it in fact has done only 96000klms.

Have not had any issues with front end bottoming however definately more feel in the suspension mainly due to the 18" low profile tyres.

Wife has a VW passat diesel work car. Engine braking with the DSG gearbox almost non existent descending the Toowoomba Range.

Just refuelled. 863 km for 49l. Works out at 5.55l/100km adjusted as above. About 100km city driving so not too bad really. Lots of this was 110km/hr on highway/freeway with a fair amount of undulating Aussie B roads.

5.1l/100km would be possible on open, flat country at steady 100 km/hr with minimal luggage and passengers. Would just get home on a tank but didn't really want to run it to fumes with the last leg 80km between fuel.

I agree. Incredible economy given weight of the car. Performance, although not fantastic off the mark, is quite surprising in terms of rolling acceleration as when overtaking. Also very refined for a diesel. Overall an impressive engine from Hyundai. From all accounts gives the established European diesel masters like Peugeot a run for their money.
