2012 Accent

I have been getting around 37 MPG on the highway with my 2012 Accent. I got on a stretch of road where the speed limit was 45MPH. There was no traffic, no lights. I set the cruise Control at 48 MPH. I drove like this for about 50 minutes. I was amazed to see the MPG slowly climb to 47.8 MPG. I couldn't believe my eyes. Let me tell you I am very happy to learn how to achieve this great mileage. The trick is press the gas pedal very gently like it is very fragile. Take your time getting up to speed, I mean very slowly. Don't press the pedal down fast or hard. Hold your gas pedal steady or lock it in cruise control once you are at the speed you want to drive at. Watch your MPG rise to numbers above what you have never seen. Let me tell you, I LOVE this car.

If your driving through hilly areas, cruise control can be a bad thing if your trying to hypermile. Slowing down uphill and speeding back up downhill helps mpgs as well. I have yet to see 42mpgs again after a long trip on 2 lane hwy with a 55mph limit, in a new Accent, 47-48mpgs should be possible on that road thanks to gdi. We have such high speed limits in the boring state of tx, 33mpgs is the most I can get going over 70mph, lol. Keep in mind the epa tests for hwy mpgs is a flat road going only 50mph. 50-60mph seems to be the sweet spot on these cars, any faster then its all downhill.

I also experience best MPG of 45+ around 42-50 MPH.
At this speed, little Accent will get rear ended on Houston freeway in no time. By driving at safer speed of 60-65 MPH it yields 35-42 MPG. |

It also has somewhat to do with how much electrical you are using. Driving at night will usually yield less mpg than during daylight. I experience about 2 mpg less on my commute to work vs the ride home. This includes the variable of no traffic in the early morning vs some in the afternoon. Just a thought

I have had similar experiences. This summer we did a lot of open road driving, 2-lane blacktop and interstate combined. I had sustained MPGs as high as 45 and as low as 32. The car is very situation sensitive, especially prevailing winds. Cruise control set at 70 gets a lot of gear shifts and rpm up to 5K. I just did a speed run to the casino 75 miles away avg. speed 80 with peaks to 90 and got 38 with no A/C. The little bugger really likes to go.

I don't know about the auto trans cars but the manual trans cars like to roll in high gear. You get up to about 75 and let off of the gas and it will keep on rolling, every 10 or 15(it might be 7 to 10) secs you push a little on the gas and let back off. just little pulses on the gas and it keeps on rolling along. I've gotten over 41 mpg on long trips this way.

My manual trans car will not slow down when letting of the gas, you need to add brake to slow down.
