If I was up north, i would definately be using a full easter based oil to maximize protection.

ester based oils are harder to find and more expensive.

I know that QSUD, and Castrol Edge w/ Syntec are all Group 3 oils. Not sure about Mobil 1 and Pennzoil Platinum, but I have read that they are G-III oils, too.

Quote:
Hydrocracked/Hydroisomerized = API Group III base oils. Chevron, Shell, and other petrochemical companies developed processes involving catalytic conversion of feed stocks under pressure in the presence of hydrogen into high-quality mineral lubricating oil. In 2005, production of GTL (gas-to-liquid) Group III base stocks began, the best of which perform much like polyalphaolefin. Group III-base stocks are widely permitted to be marketed as synthetic motor oil with few exceptions where they are not allowed to be marketed as "synthetic" (for example, Germany).
As for the cold start... you might have a problem with the high pressure fuel pump trying to warm itself up.

Mobil 1 is Class IV and Pennzoil is III (Shell blended)

Before you use ester based oils, make sure you check for seals and o rings compatibility. ester based oils comes below in tests when it comes to seal conditioning.

Well whether or not Mobil 1 is G-III or G-IV doesn't really matter. It is still a great oil.

It's just for enthusiasts, Mobil 1 has yet to publicly disclose if their Mobil 1 oils is G-III or not since it is similarly priced to G-III 'synthetics'. G-IV oil is more expensive in the world market and I can get Mobil 1 (G-?) for the same price as Pennzoil Platinum (G-III). In other words, Mobil 1 is loosing money if they are selling Mobil 1 (non-Extended Performance) at the current prices if it truly is a G-IV oil.

But like I said, you can't go wrong with Mobil 1.

Given the Canada Hyundai requirement is an oil change interval of 3,750 miles, synthetic is IMO a waste of money. Stick with a quality conventional oil such as Pennzoil yellow bottle 5W20, or QS 5W20, use a genuine Hyundai filter = good to go and sleep easy at night.
Also, I can't see it dropping much below -20C in Nova Scotia. Conventional 5W20 is A-OK.

Same timing here. SWAG is that the engine wants to see a certain amount of cranking RPM on a cold start before it sends fuel to the injectors to avoid flooding the engine.

Actually, you are kinda going against your own argument. Oil thats broken down, while not as protective as fresh oil, does flow better.
