I called the dealer to get specs on the type of oil they use out of curiosity. To my suprise, they do not use the Valvoline Durablend that I thought they did (the service advisor originally told me it was Durablend). Instead, they use Shell 5w30 synthetic blend for their bulk oil changes. The only Shell oil product I knew about was Rotella lol.
Is this a good oil? I hope I can go back to using 5w20 at 30,000 miles, which is ACTUALLY spec'd for this car....

5w20 and 5w30 are both spec'd for the vehicle and either can be used at anytime.
This is probably what they are using http://westernstatesoil.com/products...ic%20blend.pdf I can't see them using Rotella T, it's excellent oil however quite expensive for a blend. Your future plans for the vehicle will determain what grade to use...... -5w20 if only keeping it for a few years, up to 100,000miles. Use what ever you want that meets spec -5w30 if keeping it till the wheels fall off.........200k+++ Synthetic, Synthetic, Synthetic...... Duro |

Rotella is a diesel engine specific oil. You don't want to be using that with a gas engine. Stay with a name brand regular or synthetic 5W 20 or 5W 30 oil, change it within warranty guidelines, use an OEM Hyundai filter, and sleep easy at night.

However synthetics will always outperform a conventional or blend especially in extreme cold starts, and excessive heat. Duro Last edited by Duro5341; 11-28-2012 at 04:06 PM. |

When you look further into base oils, additives, actual oil specifications at different temps, etc........."product data sheets", then you will begin to see what are good oils, and what ones to stay away from. At this point you can tailor a specific oil to your car, and the demands you put on your vehicle, and what you expect it to do. As for warranty, this is up to the manufacture to prove beyond reasonable doubt that it was the oil which caused the failure. At which point they must prove that the oil manufacture is making an inferior product. Oil companies to not take kindly to this, and have millions to fight stuff like this in court. Just my 2 cents Duro |

I am pretty sure 99.999% of the folks want no fuss no muss motoring and don't want to battle Hyundai in court because they didn't use the manufacturer spec oil. |
