Default rear wheel camber?

After about 1000 miles on brand new snow tires the wear pattern on the driver side rear wheel makes it pretty clear that the camber is off...no wear at all on the outer half inch of the tire. Tire guy double-checked alignment and it's right on...says there is no adjustment in the rear for camber.

Thoughts?

There are shim-kits you can use that fit beneath the spindle.

Unless you have one HELUVA bent axle, it's not the camber that wore the tire out in a thousand miles - it's the toe setting.

All I have to go on is the tire guy, they are a local and very reputible shop.

A thread two months ago said early 2012 models had problems with alignment because of the way the car was strapped down for shipping. I think it was said it led to cars having bent rear beams.

If you could uncover more about that, maybe you could push it further under warranty.

Did the previous tires wear similar to these new tires?

Does anyone know of a way to check for this problem, besides waiting for an alignment problem to show up in uneven tire wear?
thanks.

I did not notice this on the Khumo's...they were rotated at 7500 miles and taken off at around 13K...the tire guy said they were in excellent shape.

I can have the dealer take a look at 15k service next week. Thanks for the info.

I don't know. But, did a few forum searches and found the previous discussion wherein it was mentioned early '12s damaged during shipping. You (and the OP) could PM that member for more info. And/or, revive that topic with a link to this one.

Great, thanks. This was a very helpful link. I will request the dealer to inspect and document the rear axle alignment. I'll post what I learn.

Well, I gotta' tell ya' I drive my '12 SE about 1,000 mile a week. It destroyed the rear tires in 30,000 miles, they were cupping and noisy. Dealer said: "The alignment is off: the right is worn on the inside and the left on the outside. Get new tires and we'll 4-wheel align it."

There was still plenty of tread on' em so I drove to 44,000, till I couldn't stand the noise, it was roaring. Bought 4 new Kumho 4Xs at Firestone at end of December (I bought the car in April) and then asked Dealer for an alignment. Dealer THEN said: "The alignment is perfect, except the right rear camber is -2.6 degrees. But there is no adjustment for it, so we can't help you." Back and forth... back and forth... The manual says "...if the alignment is out of spec replace or repair the affected parts and re-inspect..." Dealer says he doesn't know which parts, called Hyundai, and they said "Oh. It's bad but it's not SO bad, and since he got over 30,000 miles from the tires, we ain't gonna' let you fix it." Dealer won't touch it now. I'm totally screwed. There is not a mention of 30,000 miles in the service manual, btw... no surprise there, only a mention of correct and incorrect specs. I could get 60K+ from the fronts judging by how they look, and should get more from the rears, easily. Look, I drive straight, and I drive easy. I've had tires over 100K miles and still have half the tread left, on much larger cars.

Tire store now won't warranty the tires if I have a problem because the alignment is bad. So I'll be buying tires every 30K???

Dealer's alignment printout noted: "This is out of spec and may cause tire wear, and handling and safety problems"

Called Hyundai consumer line, ol' Jerry there then spoke to dealer and then repeated the same thing to me.. (I heard it already, you know? Got anything new to add to the discussion???).

Basically: Hyundai is simply refusing to warranty the car, and I suppose if I crashed they would say: "Well, many Hyundai owners crash in less then that many miles, so even tho' it was unsafe, it's not THAT bad..."

And the dealer is the actual bloke that years ago convinced Hyundai to warranty their cars for 100K. Wonderful, no?

My anger is seething. This is SO WRONG.
