2012 Hyundai Accent SE First Test - Motor Trend
Steering hasn't historically been a Hyundai strong point but the lowly Accent may possess the best motor-driven electric steering in the lineup. Effort is low, but the weighting is cleaner and more consistent on- and off-center, especially when compared to the last Elantra we drove. Whoever did the calibration deserves a big gold star; however, the SE does receive unique tuning. |

There is no unique tuning special to the SE. Just something different about the steering column to give it better 'feel' but no real-world difference.

Per Hyundai site, the SE has sport-tuned steering. The real-word difference is a better feel.
I test drove a Elantra GT that had the steering that is selectable to 3 different modes. You could feel more feedback in the sport mode. |

Tuning yes, physical parts no. The steering column has a different part number than all other accent models due to the different control module associated with sending the input signal to the ECU then pump. And for useless info, it's over a grand.

Well that explains the mark-up on the SE vs. the GLS. Without stating the obvious, they are otherwise identical.

I dont know why everyone hates the steering on the Accents. It's like theyre expecting a sub 20k eco car to handle like a Lotus lol

My other car is a 2,000 lb Miata and I have zero complaints with the handling of the Accent. It's a front-drive economy car that gets 40mpg highway, weighs 2400 lbs, seats 5 and looks good. What more could you want?

A turbo! Duuuuuuuhhhhhhh!
![]() Just kidding I love the steering in my Accent, I feel like most people blame the steering for the bad handling when the bigger culprit is more likely the stock 14" wheels.

Stiffer springs with a 1-2" drop would help a lot too.
