Default Avg. Speed vs. Avg. Fuel Consumption

In the quest to figure out why our Accent is a bottom dweller in the fuel economy department, I thought I'd ask people if they'd post what they are seeing as their average speed as shown on the display, and their hand-computed or Fuelly computed average mileage.

In our case it's this:

- average speed: 28 km/h (17.4 mph)
- average mileage: 9.1 l/100 km (25.9 mpg (US))

On the "average speed" indicator I normally see around 75 Km/h (45 Mph).. (I drive 80% Hwy 20% City)

The long term "average Mpg" was usually around 6.2 L/100 (37 Mpg) in the summer, but that dropped to 6.8 L/100 (34.5 Mpg) when they introduced the winter blend gas here..

Whoa, whoa, whoa!!! 17.4 mph?!!! Dude, that is WAY low! No wonder! Do you have to stop every block? I'm sorry, but that's advanced stop-and-go driving! Most city drivers would at least be in the low 20's, I would think...

I drive suburban in-town about 60%. I just averaged the 25 fill ups where I mentioned avg. mph, and got 34.2 mph. The range was 25-40 mph. At the low end, 25 mph, I get around 32-34 mpg usually.

If you're never getting above 20 mph for sustained periods, you're just NOT going to get good mileage...

Even with my lead foot in a mixture of hwy and city driving using ECO mode on two different tankfulls we are getting 36 and 37 mpg. I do not understand your bottom dweller comment? We also have a 2012 Chevy Traverse and it does not even get half that mileage. My boat gets between 0.6 and 0.7 mpg. Now it is a true bottom dweller.

I tried this before and the thread died, Ok! Experiment time!

I have recorded the cpu's avg mph and avg mpg, along with a hand calculated avg mpg for every one of my 80 fill thus far.

Thanks for the reminder, Northey! I think you inspired me to track my avg. mph from that thread - I joined fuelly.com shortly after. But what is your avg. mph? It doesn't say on your fuelly logs...

And I just noticed from that thread that Dirtbag 2 got only 27.3 mpg at 35 mph, so i guess some can still get subpar mileage at over 30 mph avg...

Avg speed: 35
Avg MPG: 36

This is the same tankful that I got my first 40+ MPG (displayed) a week ago. I filled the tank, got on the highway and got up to a consistent 40-42 displayed. I'm now at half a tank and I've done 50/50 street/highway.

I like your idea to use this as a metric. It seems pretty balanced and informative.

Just at the moment:
35MPG (according to the car's computer)
27MPH
I only hit the highway about one and half times per week, on average. Then the meter will go way up, and afterwards it crawls back down until I'm on the hwy again. The last hwy trip was a bit of a bust though, because congestion turned the highway into a parking lot for much of the return leg. I haven't figured out the ratio of miles I travel at highway speed vs. in town.
