Ok, since the mysterious and supposedly unobtainable 40mpg is such a hot topic, I'm starting the 40+ Club! :-)
This thread is for those that HAVE gotten 40mpg (5.9L/100Km) or better. If the you have gotten 40+ please report in the conditions you achieved it, so that others can see. Since its my thread I will go first. I am on a road trip currently going from my home in Dayton Pa to Poplar Bluff Mo to Siloam Springs Ar and back. Mostly highway at 60-70mph, using the AC about 50% of the time, no cruise control, light winds from all directions, and a little bit of city driving at each location. My fill ups over this trip so far have been 42.1, 45, 41.2, and 40 all hand calculated in order of fill up. I am hoping to have two more tanks over 40 as I drive home tomorrow.

I just finished a 2200 mile trip with my automatic transmission sedan. I filled up 8 times. The average for the whole trip was 37.66 MPG.
The best was 41.72 MPG at a constant 65 MPH with the cruise control on over flat terrain. There was no wind and not much traffic to speed up and slow down for... The AC was off. The ECO was turned on. |

I think we need to determine how we calculate the 40mpg.... there are three ways.
A) MPG over the whole tank - that is filling up the tank completely (not overfilling) and zeroing out the tripmeter. Then you drive around until the light comes on and fill up again and then do the hand calculation of tripmiles over gallons to fill it back up. I know there's variations when you fill up because sometimes the gas station may cut off and your fuel bars are not all the way to the top as this has happened to me before. B ) Zeroing out the AVG MPG in the dashboard between full-tank fillups. This tends to be the most inaccurate AVG MPG as it tends to range from 1mpg to as much as 5mpg over the hand calculated mpg. C)Reading the real-time MPG while driving. I think criteria A) is the most accurate way. My old Nissan Sentra was rated on edmunds to get 32mpg on the highway and I was calculating 32mpg every time I filled up. Whereas, my accent will say I averaged 40.5mpg, but I calculated it at 38mpg between fillups. So, we need to clarify on what qualifies as achieving true 40+mpg ![]() On a side note, I noticed many local dealerships stating this car can achieve 50mpg... this can confuse many people. Only the real-time mpg can show that high, but the avg mpg will never get that high. |

This is great - I'm in!
I've got the GLS sedan, manual transmission. I've had 3 tanks at or above 40 mpg (and one 39.9 mpg), all hand calculated, full tanks, so option A, the most accurate. The totals were: 40.2 (42.4 readout), 40.0 (41.8 readout) and 40.2 (42.6 readout) All of these were about 80% hwy., and could've been higher, but I drove in town after hwy. trips, and filled up after they were down to 2 bars or less. One tank hit 49.2 readout (nice tailwind) until I hit major stop-and-go traffic in Minneapolis! ECO was on, although with manual it's just the "nag-a-vator" telling you to shift up. I find I get even better in-town mileage if I shift up right before it even tells me to.

Sign me up for the 40+ club! I'm going to need to start my own hand calculations in order to have accurate numbers. And my assumption of getting 40 plus MPG doesn't come from the computers AVG MPG, it comes from my mileage trip readout. Since I'm averaging around 460 miles driven from fill up to almost empty it's easy for me to say that I'm getting the mythical 40+ MPG.

Just a note, (since I can't edit my post)... I used the actual odometer reading and gallons displayed on the pump to calculate the results. I didn't use the trip computer.
Also, I have a Canadian car that reads in kilometers, so I had to convert km to miles to get US MPG... But I was in the U.S. filling up with US gallons so I didn't have to do any liter to gallon conversions... |
