I, like others, found the screen too bright at night. I know that pressing the "Display" button will turn the screen off, but press any button and it's back on again.
I do not have a problem with the day-time brightness, just night-time, once the lights are turned on. Turning all dash illumination down still leaves the display the brightest light on the dash. Armed with the schematic, I started to install a potentiometer in-line on the "Ill-" lead of the radio (A17). However, I noticed that with the wire simply cut (nothing installed in-line), the display has a minimum brightness. I ran the 2 ends of the cut wire out on the driver's side so that I can install a potentiometer, but so far I like the level of illumination with the wire simply cut. I can no longer dim the radio display this way, but I do not know that I would want to anymore. This also allows me to keep the rest of the dash illumination turned up so that the radio display matches the rest of the illumination better. The only down-side that I can see is if you want to have your headlights on during the day. This dims the display quite a bit, but not unreadable. |

There is only one illumination control to the whole radio. The wire I cut is that control (goes to the rheostat). Cutting the wire makes the screen (and buttons) switch to their most dim setting when the lights are turned on. I find that with the dash illumination set near high, where I prefer it, and the radio screen set as dim as it will go (cut wire), works as a good combination for me. And it's a simple mod that can be undone if I decide I don't like it.
I too thought of tinted film. I was going to put 3M 50% film on, but decided against it because it will lower the brightness during the day (when the lights are off). I like the daytime brightness, so I decided against the film. |

Well, this mod didn't work out so good. Tonight the buttons were so dark I couldn't see them. I was hoping to avoid going inside the radio, but I couldn't see any other way to get what I want: keep daytime display brightness, dim display more when running lights on, and keep button brightness as stock.
I was able to tack in a small circuit to get what I wanted. If anyone is interested I can put together some instructions, but I would not attempt it unless you are proficient with a soldering iron. |

I have done the tint mod. I used a piece of tint @ 20%. I did not apply it like you would on glass. Don't remove the clear plastic and cut it a little bit bigger than the radio screen there is room to tuck it in under the outside edges. It is still bright at night but once the dimmer is turned down it's good. The only draw back is that you have to adjust your dimmer a lot.

It seems Hyundai has not addressed this problem. I regret getting the Tech Package.
It seems some people depending on their Hyundai model have options that I do not have. 1. Changing a background pallet to a darker option. Don't seem to have this. 2. Pressing the Display button. Don't seem to have it other than hitting setup - Display - Turn Display off...very hard to do while driving. I am considering tint but will check back with my sales guy to see if he has a solution. I am not against opening up the unit if someone has schematics to help me along the way : ) cheers |
