Default Hyundai-Kia recalling nearly 1.9 million vehicles

Quote:
DETROIT (AP) ó Korean automakers Hyundai and Kia are recalling almost 1.9 million vehicles to fix problems with air bags and brake light switches.

The brake light recall covers the Hyundai Accent, Elantra, Genesis Coupe, Santa Fe, Sonata, Tucson and Veracruz. Also affected are Kia's Optima, Rondo, Sedona, Sorento, Soul and Sportage. The vehicles are from the 2007 through 2011 model years.

U.S. safety regulators say a faulty switch can stop the brake lights from illuminating when drivers press the brake pedal. Also, the cruise control may not turn off when a driver steps on the brake.

The automakers will notify owners and replace the switches for free starting in June.

Hyundai also is recalling the 2011 through 2013 Elantra. A bracket can come loose when the side air bag inflates and can injure people.

it is a very old recall... I had it done on my Rondo over a year ago... so I do not know why they would bring it up again especially that they claim models starting from 2007 are affected.

Is the portion about the 2013 Elantra airbag bracket new? Was there a VIN spread reference? Or, models built between "x" dates?

Default Coverage of Hyundai Elantra Recall

From wsj.com:
Quote:
Hyundai is recalling 186,254 Elantra cars from the 2011 to 2013 model years because a support bracket attached to the carís ceiling, or headliner, can loosen and protrude when the side curtain airbag inflates during a crash. If this happens the part could injure passengers. The company said it built the affected cars from Nov. 12, 2010, through March 05, 2013.

The NHTSA last spring said it had opened an investigation into a complaints about the support bracket coming loose during an airbag deployment.

Under the recall, Hyundai dealers will apply an adhesive to the headliner. The remedy is expected to be available next month. Customers can contact Hyundai at 800-633-5151.
I called the number & gave my VIN, they have nothing on file yet, but this news article is only a few hours old.

Hyundai and Kia recall about 1.9 million cars, citing brake, airbag issues | OregonLive.com

By the Associated Press.

In the Elantra air bag recall, a support bracket can come loose when the side air bags are inflated and cause injuries. In one case, the bracket cut a driver's ear. NHTSA began investigating the problem last year and traced it to cars that had auto-dimming rear-view mirrors installed after arriving at U.S. ports. Technicians installing the mirrors could dislodge the bracket, the investigation found.

Maybe this is why my Hyundai dealer called and left a message the other day. Guess I better call them back and find out... :S
