Reset MPG guage, and hit highway for 10-30 miles...recheck.
If much higher...it's your driving habits. If not much higher, may need adjustments from service department.

Hyundais are notorisly low on MPG if RPM's are high, or you stop and go every mile for a light or sign.

I wonder what is really more fuel-efficient; accelerate slowly and steadily for half a mile, or accelerate quickly and steadily for 1000 feet?
In the first you waste fuel over a longer distance, and you stay more time into inefficient RPM ranges, in the second you waste even more fuel but for a very short distance...

Funny thing about hills, they do not average the MPG as one might expect. For a rough example, assume getting 10 MPG uphill and 50 MPG down the same hill, do not average 30 MPG on the round trip as one might think.

Assume a 10 mile long hill. Uphill you would use 1 gallon. Downhill you would use 0.2 gallons. So for that 20 mile round trip, you would use a total of 1.2 gallons, averaging only 16.67 MPG not the 30 earlier thought. Even if you turned off the engine on the return downhill trip and got infinite MPG , you would still only average 20 MPG for the trip. The same math goes for averaging a round trip upwind and down wind.

Thumbs up 40+ MPG!!!! Here's how...

Yay, I am finally getting 40+ MPG every time!!! I can't believe I completely missed the "*" mark 29MPG CITY* listed on the Owner's Manual. Simply follow the instruction below to achieve decent mileage:

1. Before starting the car pray to GOD that you get strong tail wind.

2. Map out your trip every time so you do not have to go up any hills.*
*If going up the hill is the only route simply park the car right before the slope and pull out your folded bike in the trunk and muscle it up. Well, walking would also work.

3. If the road you are driving on is not perfectly flat or have a slight upgrade simply stop the car, shift release and put it in neutral, get out of the car and start pushing Elantra's sexy behind until you get back to a complete flat part of the road or better yet, down grade.

4. NEVER stop completely at the stop sign. Right turn only at all RED lights, never let your car idle.

5. For longer trips, hop on the freeway and stay over at the far right lane, put on the hazard light and go 55mph on cruise control ignoring everyone else doing 65mph as going to that speed would kill MPG.

6. When it is time to fill the tank, go to the cashier and hand over a $100 bill and *Very Important* Blind fold yourself so you do not have to see how many gallons you put in as the human brain might automatically divide that by how many miles you have driven. Go back to the cashier and ask for change. Put the change in your pocket without counting and go back into the car and start over from step 1.

Elan1 You made my day, THANK YOU!!!! I am an old Left foot, Right Foot driver. I do not think Consumer Reports will be asking me about gas mileage. I love my new 2013 Elantra coupe.

Driving the speed limit is the easiest way to get good mpg.

Here in CA the speed limit is 65 on the freeway but according to others and my personal experience driving that speed will not get you top MPG...

I live in the SF Bay Area and yes, I drive on hills and in traffic and on freeways. However, I will say that my other cars (Honda and Toyota variations) have all still been able to achieve within their EPA numbers driving the same routes. I was VERY disappointed at first with my GT but am now only just disappointed since Hyundai is giving me their minimal reimbursement. I still can't get to even the City estimate driving mostly City with some freeway and driving conservatively which I can do with the other cars .
