But once the warranty expires, it'll need to be replaced immediately? At an elevated labor rate? Before it does extensive damage to the rest of the car and, also, makes your first born unworthy of a college scholarship, and de-neuters your dog!

Yup, I am guessing that you have been to a dealership lately.

Those guys must go to the same school. They spout out the same line of BS. Well, most of them, anyway. I try to stay away at all costs except for free oil changes.

I know the sound of that solenoid, but doesn't seem to be the issue here. That wouldn't explain why I hear the click mid driving when I release the gas to slow down without even touching the break. I'm no expert, but at least I don't think it would. That's never happened on any of my cars I've owned or rented.

Any other ideas? Now I'm hearing double clicks sometimes mid driving.

If you can consistently replicate this clicking, let the dealer's technician listen to it. If the service writer tells you it's normal, ask him/her this:

1. So, when I bought it recently with no clicks, it was abnormal? I want it abnormal again.
2. How much of my monthly payment goes towards warranty claim refusal?
3. Tell me about a time your dealer was sued for service errors. What was the outcome?

Our Mitsubishi made a "clicking" noise the whole time we had it (14 years, 148k miles) from the front driver's side hub and axle assembly. Although it could be replicated, no one (it was looked at by two dealers and independent shop as well) could ever definitively diagnose the cause and there were no issues from it... except the click. I always thought it was the CV joint, but we never had a problem and the boot was never torn and therefore never replaced.

Its super frustrating to me, but that could just be my personality I guess. I can turn the radio up for the most part, but other times I enjoy some quiet and just driving.

Either way at the next big check up service I will be complaining about this. If the service department doesn't do anything, might even take it higher if need be, find a regional manager or something. I do not think its normal for a new car to click all the time. It has to be some actuator/solenoid that deals with acceleration.

My Acura Integra with 157k miles on it doesn't click, though it is a different engine.

Go ahead and laugh, sir, but I'm putting you on retainer when you get that Juris Doctorate and pass the bar. No, not that bar...the one you have to pass to open a practice.

Of course, I'm certain a Lexus is in your future. Bye-bye Elantra coupe!
