I went in yesterday to get my oil changed, and while there i ask the service guy about upgrading for the 7"in-dash radio... by the time i finished asking my question, the service guy cuts me off telling me its a terrible idea and that i should just trade my car in and get the model i want.
As much as that sounds like a great idea i can't be trading my car just for a radio up grade. Does anyone have any type of info or anything that could help me would be great. I find crazy that his only suggestion was to trade in my car and get a new one..

From a financial point of view, that sounds like a terrible idea (the trade-in). You have a brand new car, and you're thinking about trading it (with first owner depreciation) for another brand new, and more expensive vehicle. I don't think that makes a lot of sense but we don't know all the details.
Otherwise, it depends on what you want out of the upgraded head unit. What are you looking for, the navigation, improved sound quality, etc? It might be possible to buy the upgrade head unit (and related components) from Hyundai and have it installed elsewhere but I don't think I like the sound of that idea at all. Plus, I'd be willing to bet that buying those parts will be quite pricey. |

That salesperson is full of sheet and is simply saying that for his own interests.
There are aftermarket options. Here is one: High Performance Navigation Entertainment System For Your Elantra

You have to realize that not only would you be paying the cost of the new nav radio, but the cost for them to do the labor.
The wiring is what is going to cost you a good deal, which is running the gps antenna and also the camera cables and any other misc wiring. And nothing is cheap when it comes to OEM parts, esp when you are buying through the dealership. For example, I called my dealership for the price to do the 3M invisishield on my car which would include, hood, bumper and mirrors. They quoted me $699. I can buy the precut kit for $235. |

I bought the Compass-Nav from the link EM posted and I don't regret it at all. It has a 8'' screen and is lightning fast.

The service manager gets a "bird dog" (referral) fee, usually $200, for recommending you trade. He doesn't care if you get slammed upside down in debt. That's your problem. You buy a car, he gets money, salesman gets money, dealer gets money, you get screwed! Where's the equality in that?

That's the absolute craziest thing I've ever heard. In what world does that make sense?!!!
Even if he did make $200 for the recommendation, how can he sleep at night?

On a slow sales day, you'll see salesmen periodically walking thru the customer service waiting room looking for a victim, I mean prospective buyer. She or he has already asked the service guy why the car is there. Then they approach the owner with something like this: "Ma'am, it's gonna cost about $600 to fix your front suspension. I can show you how we can solve that problem with a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty and pay off the $600 repair fee so you don't have to lay out that much cash on a car that old." Cha-ching!!!!!
