Default 2012 Elantra Shifting Problems

Hello
I have a 2012 Elantra Limited with about 36000 Miles. I purchased this car used with 12000 miles. I commute to work about 90 miles round trip a day mostly highway. I usually average about 33 or 34mpg. Recently, my mileage has fallen to 22 or 23 mpg and I have noticed my car having problems shifting. When accelerating normally, 1st - 3rd shift normally. Once I get into 4th, the car won’t shift into 5th unless I manually do it with the gear lever or play with the throttle. If I just accelerate it will go all the way up to over 6000 rpm before it will shift. There are no problems with down shifting. Once it gets into 5th it will shift into 6th normally. There are not warning lights on and it doesn't always do it so of course when I need to recreate it I can't. Any ideas?

Bring it to your dealer ASAP. Best case scenario is low transaxle fluid or need for software reflash. Worst case is a mechanical defect requiring transmission replacement. Either way it is a fluke situation that is fully covered under warranty, so don't lose any sleep over it.

Please post the results when you get them. It will be helpful to others in the future.

Easy there. Don't give yourself a heart attack...lol. wow. You've made several posts like this now. If you don't like the car, go sell it and leave this forum.

Owned my 2013 for 3-4 weeks now with around 1500kms. I have noticed twice it "hung" in 4th. I didn't continue accelerating nor did I shift it manually. I just held the throttle steady and it finally shifted after a few more seconds. Both cases I noticed I happened to be accelerating up an incline at the time. Was that the case when it happened to you?

It hasn't done it since, but if it does it again I may take it in to be checked. Let us know what you find out.

Thanks.

hm..sounds like a cylinder misfire to me... definitely get it checked out at the dealer cause it should be covered under warranty.

Engine runs fine when this is happening. Not a misfire. It's an issue with the transmission or transmission programing, most likely. Plus a misfire in the engine would not cause the transmission to not shift up. Two separate things.

Edit: The lower fuel mileage could be a result of some engine trouble though. Just might not be enough of a problem to throw a CEL. Have seen that before.

I think that is where I first noticed it, probably on a hill but it happens much more frequent now. I have also noticed that it almost feels like it is slipping, when it is in 6th gear and I press the accelerator to speed up, the RPMS go up about 1000 to 1500 rpm before the car speeds up. I have an appointment for it tomorrow at my dealership, I will post what I find out.

I think that behavior you describe is normal. When trying to accelerate in 6th gear (in shiftronic mode), there is not enough power so instead of running the engine rich, the transmission unlocks the torque converter giving some more RPM and more torque from the engine.

Bingo!

Mine does the same. It's normal.

Question ... are your engines cold? And are you guys on an incline? Hondas have a system where if you're on a hill, it will prevent the transmission from gear-hunting by holding the gear. I noticed it on my Scion too, so now I just assume most other newer model have something like this built in.

Also, when my Elantra is cold, it will hold 4th longer. My Scion did this in 2nd or 3rd when the winter came. Did it when it was new, and still at 140k when I traded it in, and it was still perfect.

Can't wait to see your results from the dealer.

In both cases it occurred for me, the engine/trans was fully warmed up. I was on a slight incline and accelerating normally.

Any other time, the trans shifts normally and doesn't "hang" like this. It will shift up normally under acceleration and then down shift as necessary if the incline is steep enough.

When I reached the top of the hill was when I really noticed it wasn't shifting. I let off and it stayed in 4th. Forget how I got it to shift or if it finally shifted on it's own.

I just figured it was still "learning" as it had less than 1000kms on it at the time. Hasn't done it since... fingers crossed.

Sometimes my wife's 97 accord hangs in 3rd. Not too worried about it, unless it becomes more frequent.
