Default Elantra Cold Start Problem?

Hi guys,

I parked my car at 9am and didn't start my car again till 11pm. It has been really cold as of late. When I turned the key, it took a few turns of the ignition to start my car and when it did start, my car started rattling and shaking vigorously. I was afraid something was wrong so I turned it off and turned it on again because I could smell fumes come into our car through the vents. It did the same so I tried to warm up the engine by stepping on the accelerator and then the check engine light came on (MIL Malfuction Indicator Light). After a few moment of pause, I turned the car on again and it started fine but the engine light remained on. I am a bit worried now...it's the holiday season and I wanted worry free ...

Anyone know whats wrong?

The fumes are from the rich fuel mixture on startup when it's cold. That's fairly common. The remainder of your issues might be checked out at a local auto parts store. They can check out your code for you. Usually a free service.

Disconnecting the battery cable for 20-30 minutes can reset the computers. It may just be an isolated incident.

Technically the misfire could be a result of the car not starting the first time. I would probably just wait until it happens again and yes its warranty.

Thank you. I was doing some searches on the forum with the code and I ran across this thread:

Wash car, hit 37,000km and check engine light

The car hasn't been acting up at all, but I am taking it in on Wednesday morning for a check up. The service person said they just had a few recent elantras coming in with the same problem and he said I will need a software upgrade and maybe some other things after it is checked out. All covered under warranty of course .

Occasionally the tiny tip of a platinum plug can fall off (and get fired out the exhaust side---not causing any damage); you may need a new plug if the missfire keeps happening ; but more likey just a one off fluke like OP stated.

Sounds like it just flooded itself when started the first time, then probably that's why the smell inside because as stated earlier the ECM allows more fuel when cold so you'll get a fuel smell in really cold weather at first start up of the day especially! I've noticed here in Ontario, Canada it's maybe -5 at most in the morning and I smell fuel and once I've noticed a little rough idle almost stumbling once and my cars only at 7,000.kms So hopefully not going to be a huge issue have to see in time I guess!

Spent two hours at the dealership this morning and the techs couldn't really figure it out. Apparently they called the hyundai tech line and they just swapped the 1st and 3rd spark plugs and the 2nd and 4th spark plugs. They said if the light comes on again, they said to bring it ASAP and they will replace the coils. If it is further an engine problem, they said they will give me a loaner car while they fix the problem. This will be all covered under warranty of course.

My car hasn't acted weird or any different so I'm just hoping this was a fluke and I won't have to go back because time is money.

Just wanted to give you guys an update on the problem. Oh also they said I am up to date with the software so no update was needed. All fuel pressure and internal measures were perfectly normal with only 7% alcohol level. I think I will go out and buy some star tron fuel additives just for pre-cautionary measures.
