Strongly disagreed on this point.

Southern Ontario doesn't get that much snow.

Also, 4WD gives you more control during acceleration in the snow but doesn't do anything extra for you in the braking department as all cars have 4 wheel braking. During the winters here, 9 cars out of 10 we see in the ditches are SUV's or other 4WD/AWD vehicles.

Ontario is also very flat in general so it's not like you need 4WD to power yourself up the mountains during winters. A good set of winter tires and some common sense driving will get you through every winter with any car, with the possible exception of RWD vehicles but those are typically hard to control even on dry pavement.

wow...totally disagreed...This is not correct, actually. No one car controls your braking. Usuing brakes is the worth thing ever if you do it, you lose control on icy or snow road, thats a reason you can see all of these SUV in ditches...Ppl have NO clue how to handle 4WD, 1 out of 1000 probably knows how-to drive in winter and how to prevent an accident.. 4WD gives you control only under traction, nothing more. If you drive S-class on winter tires you would be amazed how it drives even way better than other SUV, but when you will have say 30cm of snow...you will call for help even you have best winter tires. Check what ppl buy in tire stores for winter.....!!!

The best car for winter driving is....RWD, do you know why? The less best car is FWD and the worth is 4WD, if you lost traction on 4WD no one will help - based on safety driving.

Im not sayin that everyone must have 4WD...this is crazy even to think...but my point is it is better for winter driving, if you on the road for a new car, I will defiantly buy a good 4WD (note: not a SUV) for the same price you almost pay for a new E.

I think the point Winkle was making is that having a 4X4 in all corners of Canada is a must is simply not true. Not even close to true. Even when you get a dumping of a foot of snow...so what, the roads get ploughed..big deal. Is it a nice to have, sure why not... is it a must, nope. This out in BC or a million other places in Canada, you dont need a 4X4 to drive in winter for a handful of days that are awful out and you shouldnt be on the road anyway.

Yep, that's what I was point out. Semco is out in Calgary, I can get having a 4WD/AWD would be immensely useful out there were it snows about 8 months of the year. But there are plenty of places in Canada that doesn't get a lot of snow or not nearly as much. BC for one, southwestern Ontario for certain.

Also, in terms of braking on ice or snow... 90% of drivers are going to go for the brakes when they start sliding or skidding, not the gas. Although proper procedure is to usually keep your feet off both pedals and let the wheels try to regain traction but most people don't do that. No, instead they'll go for the brakes and this is where AWD/4WD won't help you anymore then an FWD car.

And no way, Rear Wheel Drive is tricky enough on dry pavement. I've driven an RWD car in the snow before and it is a nightmare. There's a reason most people put their RWD cars away for the winters.

Ok everyone just an update here.

I decided to go with the 2013 Sonata limited with nav.

A number of reasons are behind this decision, mainly the 3300 dollar cash incentive they have on right now that also comes with 0% financing over 48 months. When I factor in the financing on the Elantra it only works out to a difference of $1600 between the two vehicles.

Thanks for all of your input.

For $1,600 difference? No brainer! I'd be all over that Sonata as well.

Congrats, canadiankid, on your new purchase! Sounds like you got yourself a good deal. I won't hold it against you that you didn't go with the Elantra.

Thanks everyone. It was a difficult decision and I went a tad bit over what I wanted to spend however I think I got the best value for my dollar.

Anyone in Ontario (maybe Canada too depending on how Hyundai has special offers) looking for a new vehicle should seriously check out the sale on the Sonata's they have right now. The dealer was shocked when I told him to try the 0% financing for 48 months with the cash incentive still on and it worked. He checked with corporate and apparently this deal is on until Nov 30th.
