Default Bigger tires vs. lowering?

I'm currently have a fairly stock Elantra and want to get bigger rims. I've been thinking about 17's or 18's but have seem some debate about lowering.

I know that I don't want my tires too thin, but from the pics I've seen 65's look like monster truck tires.

What are your thoughts on the perfect combo? Could you guys please post some pics and say what you have as far as wheels, tires, drop, etc.?

Thanks!

The bigger you go, the more expensive they get and the sooner they wear out. My 17s are 45 series and I think they are perfect. I have seen Elantras with 18s. I think that's the biggest that looks good!

Thanks for the input and the welcome.

45's are what I've been leaning towards. Do you have your car lowered as well? Any pics you could post?

My rims and tires are stock. Elantra Coupe SE comes standard with P215/45R17 tires. No, I don't have it lowered. Not interested in any possible ride penalties!

Biggest tires to keep the speedo correct is 225/40/18.

Here's some pics of my new summer wheels.
Just in time for winter....
