Default Food for thought

Remember when it was said in the news that the 2014 Elantra is rumored to get a 2.0 direct injection engine option?

2014 Kia Forte First Look - Motor Trend

Most 2014 Fortes will be powered by Kia's 1.8-liter I-4, a naturally aspirated unit that makes 148 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 131 lb-ft of torque at 4700 rpm mated to either a six-speed manual or automatic, just like the mechanically related Hyundai Elantra. (That car recently had its EPA-rated mileage figures changed to 28/38 mpg city/highway, still a respectable figure for a compact sedan.) The Forte EX will be available with a reworked version of Kia's 2.0-liter I-4 that makes 173 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 154 lb-ft of torque at 4700 rpm. The previous-gen Forte's optional 2.4-liter four has apparently been dropped from the lineup.

Well wadaya know. It looks like that 2.0 DI engine option for the '14 Elantra is a possiblity

They are even working on an all electric version.

The car's body shell is stainless steel so no rust and if you scuff it just break out a brillo pad to shine it up.
The body may not rust but the frame was epoxy-treated steel and trust me, they DO rust. I've wanted a DeLorean since I was 13 and have spent enough time around them and their owners to know what goes wrong, what to look for when buying and how to fix it.

Now I just need one of my own.

So I wonder if the 2014 will actually come out in the correct year or if we will still be a year ahead. My guess is GDI engine and upgraded heads and taillights for 2014. Maybe a different front grill?

I see some interior adjustments. LIMITED: Power seat on passenger side? Lighted glove box? Heated steering? GLS: Dual A/C controls. Leather options? ALL: Maybe several new color entries? Seriously, it will be interesting to see what they have up their sleeve for 2014.

GDI (that is... gasoline direct injection) is not the bees knees everyone thinks it is. At least not just yet. There have been longevity issues with several models across several manufacturers with regards to the DI system. Issues requiring extensive work/repairs to the cylinder head/valves as well as replacement of the injectors. Not only are the injectors expensive but the work involved to replace them and practically rebuild the head.

DI works great for diesel and has for a long time, but gasoline DI needs more time for refinement. I agree it's the best method for fuel delivery in terms of performance and efficiency, however it needs more development IMO. It could be as simple as refining the tune (timing, dwell, pressure, etc.). I just personally wouldn't jump for a car toting GDI just yet. Maybe in another couple years.

It's interesting that the Elantra out sold the civic in sales last month (in Canada) and now Hyundai is making even more improvements for the next model year... Honda needs to go back to the drawing board and start from scratch, me thinks...
