I've never thought of the EPA figures as anything more than a rough representation of the kind of mileage a car gets. I've always sought out the actual mileage figures for cars from people I know or on the web. I know I can get 40 just by making a minimal effort to drive efficiently and a few mpg better if I really try. With "casual hypermiling" 46-47 is not that hard. When I was researching the Accent and a couple of its competitors it just seemed likely that it was going to be a really efficient car based on the weight, the body and the powertrain. The car has definitely been on the high end of my expectations.

For the 37 or 38 that it is rated at now I should have got a different vehicle. I know it is not much, but when compared to a mazda 3 or civic, they meet or beat those numbers BUT they are faster and handle better :P (the civic and M3 that is)

--Neither the Mazda3 nor the Civic are as fast as the Accent. The Accent motor is not very torquey but it is a bit of a screamer if you wind it out. I have seen a couple tests where the Accent did 0-60 in the high 7s. This is realistic for 138hp in a 2400 lb. car. The M3 is 15% heavier and makes 7% more power and test I saw said 8.5. The base civic makes the same power and is a little lighter than the Mazda and does it in around 9. The Accent engine is probably the most advanced engine ever offered in a $15K car, so given the low drag and frontal area the real world economy advantage should be comparable.

I guess I wasn't crazy when I posted this back in April.

You win the "I told you so," T-shirt! Come to think of it, there should be a lot of members wearing one, LOL. Alas, I don't get one. I live in an environment with terrain that encourages higher than usual MPG's.

I don't think Hyundai did anything wrong or tried to deceive anyone. It was just an error. I don't need to justify taking the money by getting mad at Hyundai. I'm taking it bc. they are a giant Korean multinational and I need it. I'll probably get my oil change done at the dealer which I usually don't do and if it was costing them anything I wouldn't take it.

I think Hyundai delivered incredible value with the Accent and I am definitely a fan. My mileage often exceeds the original epa #s but I never looked at them as more than ballpark figures. The EPA tests are a bizarre ritual which only somewhat correlate with real world figures. I knew the Accent would get class-leading mileage bc. it is the lightest car in it's class, has the best engine and has a great Cd w/ low frontal area (It's also the best looking w/ the nicest interior but I digress..) The car has exceeded my expectations on mileage.

Also, their new C-Max Hybrid has an EPA rating of 47/47/47 hwy/city/combined but the average on Fuelly is 40MPG which is a whopping difference.
No way a 3600 pound vehicle could get 47mpg. Now that's just a lie. I'm pretty surprised it gets 40 but I"ll buy it.

This is a perfect representation of how to manufacture, shovel, and step-in what you're trying to feed to the rest of us. Sorry, dude, NO SALE! Take your conspiracy theories back to those witless others that aimlessly roam thru life looking for a pied piper.
Agreed. It's 2 freaking mpg. Big deal

I think a critical difference here between your situation and many folks posting on the Elantra and GT sites is your statement, "My mileage often exceeds the original epa #s . . ." I (and I assume many others as well as the originator of the post) would not have pages and pages of discussion if that were the case. While some have been able to meet or exceed the EPA numbers I (and the vast majority of the professional auto reviewers) have noted that the Hyundai numbers are inflated much more than comparable cars. Check the numbers on fuelly.com and compare to what Hyundai and other manufacturers put as the EPA numbers and you will see the Elantra and GT are significantly off. The EPA numbers are not firm expectations but should be able to be used to compare cars with some credibility. Funny how all of the Hyundai numbers were in their favor and nobody at corporate checked it out futher?
