How cool is that? What's that you say? GROUP BUY? I'm gonna be the first to get one under the tree from Santa. Let's order extras as gifts for all of our unhappy friends. A show of good faith, if you will. A peace offering for the disenchanted. I'll be the first, who'll join me in the revallry?

If I wasn't so morally opposed to stickers and magnets on my personal cars, I'd be in!

I can't even bring myself to put an alumnus sticker in the window. For shame.

On top of that you are judging it based on ethanol blend gas and moreover largely on winter mix fuel which will hurt your averages. Did the Corolla get 33-34 in winter only, or is that including summer too?

I have yet to see below 30 MPG on a tank and when highway trips are mixed in it is well into the 30's. I have seen upwards of 40MPG on highway only trips. Short highway trips to me aren't really "highway" driving based on the EPA descriptions. So while my "normal" commute is 10 miles (8 on highway and 2 in city driving) it wouldn't be fair to say I drive 80% highway. In a 10 mile commute the car never has time to get warmed up and get up to a point where I can maximize fuel efficiency. At best I would consider my short commute as "mixed" driving and would expect to see the mixed average of 30 MPG for the MT. I can say I can easily see that. Hopefully with a few more miles on your GT you will see improved efficiency.
Even though the EPA numbers for the auto and manual are very close with the auto getting 1 mpg higher in the city I wonder if the manual actually gets better mpg "in real life". We all know the EPA reportings are suspect anyway.

My take is on highway, there shouldn't be a difference (at least not material enough to be measurable). Afterall once your in 6th gear in doesn't matter if you have a manual or automatic.

In city, I think I personally can get better mileage with a manual than the automatic despite the EPA calculation. My guess is the automatic is rated better based on the active eco option. What I can do in a manual that you can't do on an automatic is press in the clutch when going down hill. There are several spots where I do this as I approach a light or stop sign.

Yes, the problem with EPA estimates is that for a large percentage of the population they will never drive in conditions representative of the EPA test conditions.

Actually pressing in the clutch coasting down a hill might cause you to use more gas not less. I have heard on other forums that some people with scan tools in their vehicles that were monitoring the injector pulse width saw that it actually dropped to zero when coastng. While the engine was still "running" it was actually the wheels turning the engine rather than the other way round, all with no fuel being added. This actually explained something I had noticed driving a diesel pickup some years ago, I noticed that the distinctive noise of the diesel engine disappeared completely when coasting. As soon as you gave it a little fuel it was right back. It makes sense, if you don't need to add fuel to keep the engine turning, just shut off the injectors until you do.

I just finished reading this entire thread and I have to say...

I'll probably get one in red.

No ones has the Blue Sky Metallic GLS in south FL.

I still have about 120 more pages of the index to read. Reading them from oldest to newest.
-------------------

I was disappointed to hear the Elantra didn't get the advertised fuel economy even with people that baby the car. I still haven't test driven it. Maybe I will stop by my local dealer tomorrow. I won't receive a gas card like you guys have so I plan on asking for a lower price due to this mpg fiasco.

Funny thing is all the dealers around here have raised their prices by 1-2k!
They're nutz. Combined mpg of 32mpg is a lot better than the 21mpg I get in my run-down 96' Altima.

My uncle's 2008 Sonata gets the 23mpg combined that the EPA says but it has trouble doing it and I do also baby the accelerator.
