According to Reimbursement Estimator on this website https://hyundaifuelconsumption.ca/ I should get 184$ (CAN$). I did a total of 39000 km in Montreal, Qc area.
"Compensation is calculated by taking the difference between the old and new combined fuel consumption ratings, multiplied by the average fuel price in the owner’s region, and the actual kilometres driven on the vehicle."

I have seen lots of posts both ways and I have been perusing posts both here and at the Elantra Club forum. With the small engine size in the Elantra, hilly terrain and/or higher speeds (say 75+) will have a MUCH larger impact on fuel economy than another car with a larger engine (for instance your Lexus). Also, how many miles do you have on the GT? I noticed as I crept up to 3k miles that the MPG bumped up a little. I have done several trips to Charlotte and the last one I did, I pulled in the driveway with 40.3 showing as the average on the computer. That was an easy highway drive over rolling roads cruising at 65 for most of the way. That was also better than any previous trip.

The other thing to keep in mind is the 87 fuel you put in the GT has 10% ethanol and the premium gas you put in the Lexus could have no ethanol (seems to depend on the location). Obviously that will hurt the GT when trying to compare to the Lexus too. In any case I don't know that you would be seeing much better economy from a Mazda 3 (or one of the other 38-40MPG economy cars) over your Elantra and obviously that would need to be the comparison to have.

Appreciate the input. Actually here in the San Fran Bay Area there is no Ethanol in the Chevron premium I use. I have spoken with 2 people with the Mazda 3 (Skyactiv) driving in the same area and they are hitting 33- 40 mpg. I only have 2K miles and would love to see it go up with more miles on the odometer. Here's hoping!

You should. I had a 2011 Sonata before this and cruising above 65 or 70 didn't seem to affect the MPG that much. That being said, it had a larger engine, but irregardless of the speed, I would see 35 on the highway (what it was rated at). With the GT, I took a trip to Atlanta the other week and spent most of the time at 75+. Well I was only seeing 33MPG on the computer. If I would've slowed down to 65, that would've jumped real quick to around 40. From experience, I think my Sonata would've done at least as well as the Elantra if not slightly better on that trip to Atlanta. The Elantra fares better on trips to Charlotte (slower speeds), as well as around town driving. Ohh well, different cars and engine sizes. I'm just glad I went with the loaded model, because I love the panaramic roof and technology in it!

Just drove my 2013 Elantra back to Canada from Orlando Florida area. Made the trip over 3 days. Total mileage traveled 2160 kilometers (1350 miles). Used cruise at approximately 72 miles per hour over the course of the trip. Kept tract of exact number of gallons of fuel used for the trip.

Gas mileage over course of the trip.

6.5 liters per 100 kilometers
36.15 miles per US gallon
43.71 miles per Imperial gallon.

Canadian gas mileage stickers advertised 4.9 liters/100 kilometers highway driving

US gas mileage stickers advertised 40 miles per US gallon (5.9 liters per 100 kilometers) highway driving.

Perhaps folks could indicate if they have an auto or MT when posting unless it is on their sit- perhaps that is making some of the difference.

First I want to say hello as this is my first post. Also it seems as if this forum seems to understand that some people may have an mpg issue and by posting about it it is not a slam against the Elantra or spam or whatever. Another forum, which shall remain nameless, apparently doesn't feel that way.

We purchased our Sky Blue '12 Elantra GLS sedan w/ Preferred Package in March 2012. Our other vehicle had been in an accident and we needed to replace it quick. I had my eye on the Elantra for a while. I'm fairly well informed, not a fanatic. I watch Motorweek, read car reviews, etc. and was impressed by the reviews of the Elantra. I will say it's gas mileage was a factor, a fairly important factor. We have, depending on the day of the week, the highest gas prices in the US on an average basis. Mileage wasn't the only criteria but after comparing the Elantra to other compacts, it's value, styling and its mileage compared to the competition made me decide to purchase.

I'm no spring chicken. My days of hot rodding (if ever) are long gone. I know how to drive a vehicle to maximize mileage. I know about propert tire inflation, etc. Right away I could see we were not getting the advertised mileage. A 300 all highway trip got us 36 mpg. Good, but not 40 mpg. Mixed driving was getting us 30mpg or even lower, not the 32mpg advertised.

I understand cars need to be broken in etc. so I took it in stride. Then after it was not getting better I decided to search the net. And unfortunately I found many posts from owners having the same issue. So I had to believe there was some sort of issue.

I've written too much already, bottom line is I am somewhat disappointed with the mileage and when the news came out about the overstatement I was a little miffed. I know it's only a 1 and 2mpg change but still I think there may be more to it than Hyundai's claims that it was an oversight.

I got the dealer to verify mileage and we will get our small reimbursement (not a lot of miles put on). I did think it strange that I got no email after registering online and also calling. Hopefully I will get my debit card.

In summary, I am disappointed with the mileage but I still like our Elantra. I will not sell it because of this as other have suggested. Really who would? I can't afford to lose that kind of money after eight months.

I look forward to reading this and other discussions here.

I just went through a year of credit card statements and some notes I took to determine how much I've spent on gas and where. Didn't take long. I have also been keeping odometer readings, MPG estimates, actual MPG calculations, etc. over much of the entire life of the car. So I'll be checking Hyundai's math.

On long trips, I've been getting ~36 MPG (not 100% highway - that would be 38-42 MPG). 50/50 mixed driving (often with heavy traffic and a lot of stops) gives 28-32 MPG. City driving usually gets me 24-26, but is harder to estimate because I almost always spend some time on the highway. Though I do wish this car and the EPA ratings were both something they're not, I'm content with these numbers.

More recently, I've been driving without Eco mode. Gas mileage has been good. Eco mode hasn't been yielding any noticeable improvement for me so far. And even with tire pressure and local weather taking a huge dive recently, my MPG numbers look decent.

Compared with my estimated cost of having a Prius, including gas and maintenance, I seem to be doing a little better with my Elantra and its superior feature package. When I have more time, I'll see if a year and a half of data continues to back that up.

Your numbers match Motor Trend's test results. Keep it under 65 mph if you want to get 40 MPG.

I have 25K miles on mine. I noticed slight increase in MPG after about 11-12K miles. I get 36-37 highway @ 65mph if there are not too many hills. City is 27ish typically and combined around 30-31. So, yes, the "new" MPG estimates by Hyundai are still slightly wishful thinking.
